Season 39 – 1967 F1 (Privateers) – Round 5 – Suzuka
The fifth race in the 1967 F1 Privateers series takes us to Suzuka in Japan. In the late 1950s, Soichiro Honda decided to develop a new permanent circuit in Mie prefecture. He commissioned Dutchman John "Hans" Hugenholtz to build what would become a test track for Honda. It was completed in 1962. The track is unusual in that it features a "figure eight" layout, with the 1.2 km back straight passing over the front section by means of an overpass. It's one of only two FIA Grade 1 licensed tracks to have a "figure eight" layout, the other one being the Fiorano Circuit. In 1983 a chicane was inserted at the last curve to slow the cars into the pit straight; the original circuit was an incredibly fast track with only one slow corner; without the Casio chicane some cars would go through the final long right-hand corner flat out and then would go past the pits at more than 200 mph (320 km/h). In 1984 the first part of Spoon was made slightly slower and the corner was brought closer to the track to expand run-off area there, and in 1985 the first corner was made slightly slower. In 1987 the circuit was brought up to F1 standards to allow the Japanese Grand Prix to be held at Suzuka for the first time. The Degner curve was made into two corners instead of one long curve, more crash barriers and more run-off areas were added, exposed vegetation was barricaded off and straw bales were removed. It is this layout that we will use for tonight's race.

Please read the Season 39 general rules on the championship standings page.

Please read the specific rules for 67 Privateers series on the 67 Privateers championship standings page.

My car got stuck in the pit at the end of qualifying. Pressed the green button & disco'd.
I said some words that I cannot publish on the forum!
Hope you have a great race.

Eric - 2 observations, do you warm the engine in neutral before the flag goes down?
Exploding the engine is usually caused by over-revving the engine or not backing off the gas when you are changing gear. Other mods like 65 and F2 are a bit less fragile that the 67.
If you look at the 'Team Info' page on GPL it tells you maxiumum revs for each car. The BT24 Repco engine is 8,200 so I usually change up at 8,000 except when in 5th gear on the longest straight.

At Suzuka, every new lap is a new adventure.  I found it impossible to drive every lap the same.  I picked a slower car, as I'd put together a perfect setup, to endure to the finish, but with some restraint needed not to throw it about, and destroy the tyres.

A very competitive start - we've a high standard of driving.  This track could easily have taken out a half dozen cars on lap one.  I took advantage of a small incident, and zipped up to p2.  Surprised to hang onto my lofty position for over half the race!  One small detour was enough, for Dave to pounce in his ferocious Ferrari, but pleased enough with 3rd. laugh

Congrats. to Dulima, who I didn't see all race!  A dominant and well deserved win, after the Gods conspired to disapointed at Lime Rock.  Sad to see more motors abused and destroyed by some - the one reset rule, used to provide a spare motor.

Yes I know. I take my foot off the accelerator when I change gears. What drives me crazy is that I did 15 consecutive laps in qualifying without any problem, and everything exploded during the race on the first lap! It makes no sense! So strange.

I thought I new this track from the old Geoff Crammond Grand Prix days, having spent hours of fun thrashing around it . but the GPL version was totally different , the corners seemed a lot faster , particularly T1 , Degna 1 & 2 and the mighty 130 R with  the straights a lot longer ! In comparison this track was a real challenge to drive so I went for a solid (slow) set up with the idea that most of the fast boys ( i.e.) everyone else , would self destruct . Unfortunately things didnt turn out as planned so instead I had a lonely drive at the back of the field . Great track enjoyed driving it once I got the hang of that chicane which I only missed once during the race .
Looking forward to the next .

Grats to the podium boys !
