Season 39 – 1955 GP - PRIVATEERS – Round 5 – Dundrod

The fifth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Dundrod in Northern Ireland. The Dundrod Circuit was first used in 1950 for the RAC Tourist Trophy Sports Car race and for the Formula One (non-championship) Ulster Trophy. The Sports Cars raced again in 1951 through to 1955 and the Formula 1 cars from 1951 through to 1953. The circuit comprised public roads closed for racing including a section of the B38 Hannahstown Road between Glenavy and Hannahstown, a section of the B101 Leathemstown Road from Leathemstown Corner to Dundrod and a section of the B153 Quarterland/Tornagrough Road from Cochranstown to the road junction of the B38 Upper Springsfield Road/Hannahstown Road at the Lindsay Hairpin. The last car race held on the Dundrod Circuit was the 1955 RAC Tourist Trophy race in which sadly there were 3 fatalities. The narrow, high-speed nature of the circuit, meant it was just too dangerous and since then it has only been used for motorcycle racing.

For this race we will use the 1955 layout which includes the Leathemstown Bridge section.

Congrats Bernie!  A fine win round here.
Congats podium - making it to full race distance at Pro is quite something.

After a lot of crashing (mostly involving CTD during pre-event practice) I was taking it very carefully.
Prior to the event, I'd only managed to string 2x laps together once.
During the qual session, I managed 4 laps - so was hopeful of adding another couple during the race.

All was going ok with the slow & gentle approach, then I lost my place on the run back from the hairpin.  Thought I had another fast-ish bend, but not the case.   Nevermind, I'll just take the 10 tokens.  Making it to half distance would have been a bonus.

Cheers,
Dave.

Congratulations to Bernie. Bravo.

I managed to blow my engine on Lap 4. That meant plenty of smoke and a max engine speed of 3,800 RPM. I have nothing better to do on a Sunday evening so I settled back for 35 minutes of super slow driving, taking in the gorgeous scenery of this track. With such a high casualty rate at this track i decided to hang on for as long as I could in the hope that I'd be rewarded with a few points. I can't quite believe it that I made the podium doing 6 minute laps for the majority of the race.

Ironically I blew the engine by trying to keep the revs down. Trying to find 5th gear in the Connaught was always going to end in disaster though. Silly me.

Congratulation to Bernie and not for me.An error during the brake at the Wheeler's caused me to lose a wheel on a pole.
Too many error this season.

I had an accident all alone like a jerk, while I was quiet in front.
mod 55 requires a lot of concentration.
I had drunk the aperitif just before, this explains it  angel  Grin

Thanks for the accolades chaps , lady luck dealt me a huge handful of aces for this track , I had been testing pre race with the Masser but like others couldnt get 2 laps together without crashing out , like Dave C the big problem I had was remembering which corners were fast and which were slow escpecialy on the run from the hairpin ( they all look the same to me ) so on the last minute decided to take the Conny and not waste too many points . I had three or four brown trouser moments any of which would normally result in a disaster but I got away with it , why ? who knows , possibly my slow pace or was it because I was using the lite version of the track ?

Of coarse the win was due to good fortune more than good driving but I'm not complaining  Embarrassed

Grats to Albert and Pete for hanging in there . commiserations to those who tried hard but fell by the wayside  Smiley

Last season (it was Dundrod 1950) I won the privateers race when Bernie, the leader, had to retire.
I am happy Bernie could win this one !

I was expecting a good result here but unfortunately on lap 4 or 5, I made a small mistake and got stuck in the bushes. (What is this country where a 245 HP car gets stuck in a small shrub?)
I took a cautious start and let Albert overtake me. Dave was even slower than me at the start and i overtook his car.

It was not easy to follow Albert, on the 1st lap he was spinning in the middle of the road and he restarted without taking any care of my car. I had to fully stop to avoid the collision...

Thank you David

Nice of you to say that . I was hoping for a re match of the last race but it didn't turn out that way ,

I think I got your share of the luck as I re arrange the shrubbery at least 3 times and survived  Roll Eyes
