Moderator's Report

Drivers were instructed to use a different Group III car to the Monaco race. As DQ's were applied for the same infringement at Rouen, a further exclusion is necessary for Bastian.

Phil tried a pass on Billy (for position) up the inside into Clearways. Although there enough overlap to justify the attempt, Phil put a wheel on the inside kerb which pushed him into Billy's side of the track and contact was made. The contact was only minor and both cars continued.

Season 39 – 1968 EARLY – Round 6 –  Brands Hatch

Welcome to the first full season of the 1968 Early Mod – when racing cars evolved to grow wings. We will be using a selection of tracks from the original 1968 season. For each race drivers will be able to select from a group of 4 cars that have relatively similar performance levels.

There is no handicapping.

The second round will be run at Brands Hatch, which hosted the British F1 Grand Prix on a number of occasions, including 1968. The race was won by Jo Siffert in the Ford powered Lotus.

The car set is Group III. Drivers are reminded to select a different chassis to the one they drove in Round 2 at Monaco.

Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 39 general rules on the championship standings page.

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

David,
Track directory should be "Brands 67". I copied the link from the Series Registration thread.

Bastian,
The 'Full 68' download might be fine but I downloaded Parts 1 & 3 from the GPL Racer site (Part 2 is probably worth having) because I have only ever raced the '68 Early' car sets.
If it working properly you should get the option to alter the wing angle for the Group IV cars only. (You won't need them tomorrow)

Hi Billy,

thanks for the information. The wing issue is solved, but the car for me is not competitve and badly driveable compared to the other mods.
We will see tonight if it improves

Sorry to have carved you up going into Paddock, Phil.  I was a little annoyed at the time what with being bunted off the road the lap prior from P4 and all feints I had to deal with.

No problem Doni. I wasn't able dial out the snap oversteer from my setup so the car was a bit twitchy when I started to push a bit. Consequently I made for too many mistakes. When I tried a speculative look up the inside at Paddock Hill I hadn't driven that bit of the track at racing speeds and I locked up and spun out. It wasn't your move Doni, it was my twitchy setup. See you next time for another epic  Wink

These cars are not easy to drive, at least for me with my setups.

At the exit of Druids, we were side by side with Billy and there was contact. Billy spun but I could continue without issues.
Billy, feel free to submit a report. I have no idea who is responsible, one of us or the two ...or the crashbox ?

These cars are not easy to drive

True for me.  They wander all over the track both on & off power.  Braking is also a gamble.
I'm only driving the different cars due to this season. Maybe I appreciate the 55s a little more (and I still don't like them!)
But is good that at least this is another mod where default setups are ok.

I didn't realise there was so much banking at Brands.  At times, I was a billiard ball bouncing from the cushons of the circuit.

Will be a relief when this season is over!

happy that i'm not the only one. seems the hardest mod of all. I touched Pete when he was lapping me because i lost control. Sorry again for your loss of a position.
I had several shift -r, 3 crashes and 2 Engine i guess. at least the speed was not that bad.

I had an epiphany this week with the setups on these 68's, or maybe it was simply the car?

FWIW I have been struggling with the default setups ever since the season started and just could not find anything resembling a "sweet spot". So as I had some spare time on Monday I sat in my rig and thought ...."well I know the Brands Hatch circuit and I know what a fast lap feels like and how I want the car to behave, for me to achieve that".
Then I looked at the default setup for the Matra 11 and wondered why the rollbars were so soft?? They had been soft on the other 68 car defaults that I had tried previously, but I had simply assumed that there was some logic to that.

From what little I know about GPL setups, I understood that stiffer rollbars generally make the car more responsive/oversteery especially if the values are close together. As my biggest complaint was that I could not get these damned cars to turn in when I wanted them to I made a decision to throw the default values in the bin and start again.

Initially, I set the rear at 180lbs and the front at 165lbs also I changed the diff to 60/60. Not perfect, but it felt more like how I thought a GP car should drive ( I have no idea how they really feel!!). Eventually, after many tweaks I arrived at the setup I used in the race. The biggest problem was getting the tyres to reach optimum temps/pressures ( I have assumed that 25psi is right for the 68's?) It took around 3 laps before things started to work properly and then it was back to the pits to tweak the cold pressures and camber etc.
The result was a car that for me at least felt driveable and worth racing. During quali I was still making fine adjustments and running on full tanks and quite pleased to see that I was not too many seconds off the pole time ( not sure that I could get close to that pace but with lighter tanks maybe a second or two to be found?).
The setup is not perfect but in parts it is giving me what I want. Slight oversteer as I power out of corners so that the car tightens the line slightly and allows me to get on the gas early. Braking is good but I need to work on the turn in, as it was slightly unpredictable at times...usually too fierce and bumping the inside front wheel over the kerbs and unsettling the whole car.

I guess what I am trying to get across is..... I don't know who devised the default setups, or how they drive within GPL, but if you are finding these cars difficult to handle then there is almost certainly a setup configuration that will make it better for you.................all you gotta do is go looking??!! Roll Eyes

I am happy to share my current setup if people want to contrast and compare, but be warned that I use 6:1 steering ratio so you might want to adjust that before venturing onto the circuit  lol!

I added my setup of the race here for you to try out.
Maybe a bit of a alien setup to some, but maybe you find something in there you could use.

I had forgotten great Jani's statistics:
