Season 39 – 1955 GP - PRIVATEERS – Round 7 – Brno The seventh race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Brno in Czechoslovakia. The original circuit which dates from 1931 was approximately 18 miles (29 km) of public roads on the outskirts of Brno. The start was located in Bosonohy and it ran in an anti-clockwise direction through Kejbaly, Libusino, Kohouvotice, Žebětín, Ostrovacice and Veselka. The circuit retained this layout until 1937 when war brought racing to a close. In 1949 Brno re-opened and on 25 September 1949, a Grand Prix race was held on the street circuit. The race was run clockwise on a shorter 11.1 miles (17.8 km) layout, which turned right at Veselka, bypassed Ostrovacice and entered Žebětín from the south rather than the west. In spite of a crowd in excess of 400,000 people, this would be the last Grand Prix for cars on the old street circuit. The race was won by Peter Whitehead a Ferrari 125. Whitehead had several race wins, including the 1938 Australian Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1951, but he is also notable as the first person to whom Enzo Ferrari ever sold a Formula One car. It is the same car he drove to victory in this race. In fact, the 125 was the first Formula 1 car Ferrari produced ready for the inaugural Formula 1 season in 1950. Numerous changes were made to the street circuit until it was finally closed in 1987 in order to move the racing onto the newly purpose-built race circuit situated just off the original course, between Ostrvacice and Zebetin where the races continue to this day.

Damn! Another race with no points. I popped the engine on L4. Annoyingly I had just started to take it easy as I had a 25 second lead and was worried about fuel consumption. I love the 55s but they are SO FRUSTRATING. I apologise to Albert for the knock on the back on L1. I think we were all braking hard to avoid the crash ahead of us. Glad you recovered

Congrats Fran, unlucky Pete.
Was hopeful ot 50% distance (which would be the most number of laps I'd have managed in one go), but very happy to manage full distance.
Unlucky the retirees.
Cheers, Dave.

In the end I won so the incident with Bernie is not so important. He knocked me off the track in the last corner with overturning and I was lucky to be on four wheels after the overturn and find a way to return on the track. Bernie you could have ended my race there! Another lucky thing was seeing the other drivers in front come out one by one when I was last.

Congratulations Francesco. After your accident, I let you pass because you were quicker than me (...and didn't want to take any risk for you and me).
I took a very cautious begin of the race. After Road America 1967 race, I didn't like to see Mr Hallu behind me, so I was just happy to follow him until he went out of the track. At the begin of 7th and last lap, I was 3rd and last with no big hope to join the 2 leaders so I lost my concentration and hit a wall (or something).

Grats to Francisco on the win , I like this track but it needs loads of concentration to finish in one piece , which I didn't have , mostly down to being up in the loft freezing my nuts off . By the time I had done qually and got to the race I was already suffering from hypothermia so decided early on to call into a roadside cafe for a coffee , unfortunately I missed the cafe and found the wall !
Sorry again Fran , like I said I hit the brakes for the corner but failed to notice they were already red . My bad .
Seems it was your turn to get a visit from lady luck .

No championship hopes, but two races entered, on tracks to test the powers of man and machine. At Valentino the machine broke, while here at Brno I went for broke. Mission accomplished, when I broke the car. It took offence, because I took a fence while leading. Stayed to Watch the fight to the finish from some true racers. In success and in failure, it was good to be alive, in 1955!

Congratulations Fran, well done. I have watched some of the replay and see that you are still hitting maximum revs on your up shifts. The engine may not have lasted much longer.
