Season 39 1967F2 – Round 10 – Professionals - Snetterton

For the final round we are at Snetterton in the UK. Like Silverstone, Snetterton was originally an RAF airfield (RAF Snetterton Heath), which after a short time hosting the USAF, fell into disuse in 1948. The standard runway layout is similar to Silverstone but the peritracks are different which has fortuitously resulted in a different track layout to Silverstone. The vast stretches of tarmac were first used for motor racing in 1953 when the Snetterton Combine (an association of clubs in Norfolk and Suffolk) organised a motorcycle race. The first automobile race was organised by the West Essex Car Club and was held on 14th August 1954. The International Trophy Meeting hosted a variety of classes with Reg Parnell winning the Formula 1 event in a Ferrari 625. Paddock Bend was revised in 1965 and it is this "1967" layout we are using.

Bugger!  Sad

I could possibly be persuaded into parting with some of my booty for 'future considerations'.  That or some used fivers in a plain brown envelope shoved under the door in the public lavs.  Not a bribe, per se, but rather more like undisclosed, pre-payments to assorted functionaries to assure a favourable result.  Nudge, nudge, wink, wink...

Not sure why I was EXCLUDED ?? I did quit voluntarily but had used a S/R.

Grats to the podium places and all who finished this race and this season. I hope that you all enjoyed the racing and the fun.

Slowly I am regaining confidence in my Thrustmaster wheel and new pedals and the switch to H shifting. It has taken much longer than I expected, but then I am older and the fossilised brain cells are less active than they were years ago  Undecided

The F2 race at Snetterton felt like another step forward and I was a little more "on the pace" again, although there were some very irritating mistakes.
My old setups just did not feel right with the new rig and, again, it has taken time to find the right balance.

Qualifying was good and a nice start picked up a place and slotted me into 3rd spot, from where I could watch Tris and Leo battle up ahead.
First stupid mistake ( watching mirrors instead of braking points ) and Yannick was through.
Tris has eased away and Yannick joined battle with Leo for 2nd spot....I was a spectator again  Undecided. I guess that there had been an "incident " back in the field because there was suddenly a large gap behind.
Leo and Yannick chose to test each other's crumple zones at the hairpin, and suddenly I was in 2nd spot!! Tris was approx 250 mtrs ahead  and I was able to keep pace ( the first time for a long time that I have done that!!).
Until yet another stupid error ..lack of concentration again!... required a S/R and allowed several cars to pass. I went from 2nd to 8th in about 2 laps  Sad

Set off after Axel, Pete, Bastian and Tom? slowly closing the gap until I could squeeze some passes. One by one I picked them off with a couple of classic demon braking moves into the hairpin  Grin I hope that I left enough room when I did.

Back up to 4th and easing away from Bastian who was behind me in the Lola BMW and......another momentary lapse of reason at the Esses put a wheel on the grass and dragged the car up onto the berm where it was beached ??!!
TBH I did not think that I deserved another reset after such a series of basic errors, so I headed for the bar in the paddock to drown my sorrows.

Great way to finish UKGL seasons!

Snetterton is my testing grounds so pressure was high in the garage. Stealing pole from Tristan after the flag was a good sign, getting some bystanders in the paddock by surprise as the cheering started before the race.

Came down the green flag and Tris wasted no time waiting for tires get to temperature, outbraking me at the hairpin though I put up some challenge. While he was slowly opening up a gap Yannick was already growing in my mirrors. I knew he would waste no time with me but I got surprised with the dive pass attempt as approaching the braking zone at the hairpin as I glimpsed the mirrors and he was still behind and we collided. Clive got pass us but luckily we didn't loose too much time.

One lap latter Yannick got the best draft in the main straight and the perfect overtake, the plan being sticking to him to reach the two guys up front. All this in only about six laps raced. So we were closing the gap up front, but Yan and Evil made mistakes and I was left with Tristan not that far away and a steady difference lap after lap. I don't think I was putting some pressure on Tris but he dad a huge off between Coram and Russel. Maybe he got his tire pressure too high, which is an issue here.

So I was left up front keeping an eye at the action behind me and managing the gap and it looked like I wasn't going to be challenged to the flag.  thumbup2

Sorry to learn that you're not in top form, Fulvio.  Take very good care, amico.

Nice job for the win, Leo.  Well done.  Sad to see that Clive came to an evil end with a DQ...Huh...after running P2 early on.

I had a fairly mundane run to a P9 finish but this was right on target for my season goal of taking a Top 10 place in the final standings in the Formula B-spec Brabham BT14 that was done fully 20kph on the main straight here at Snetterton.  I had initially selected this ride for the first couple of races in the series with the idea of just accumulating tokens for other rides down the road.  However, it soon took on a life of its own with the idea of seeing how well I could score over the season with a totally uncompetitive ride.  Eight races, eight finishes with only two dramas alone the way.  Bot shoving me off at Cadwell and Ricky bungling Knickerbrook at Oulton Park and getting me caught up in his error.  All things considered, a good season and job done.  Smiley

Thanks to the club for organizing and hosting.
