Moderator's Report

This opening race of the 65's Season 40 was not always a shining example of perfect driving, although the podium finishers drove clean and fast for the whole race.
Further back in the field there were multiple rear end collisions and some bad re-joins. I have spent several hours studying the replay, watching each driver through the race.
It is sometimes too easy to comment upon other drivers mistakes in which you were the victim, but conveniently forget about the times that it was you who knocked someone else off of the circuit?
The race post says "REPORTED INCIDENTS ONLY TO BE MODERATED" and I will stick to that, although this race probably deserves a complete and comprehensive moderation and the distribution of many more penalty points etc.

Server replay time: 0

Bastian, Tom have been impeded by Will Bennett not allowing them to lap him for the previous few laps( more about Will in a separate section ).
This has allowed Clive to close up behind Tom. Tristan also catches the tail end of this train of what is now 5 cars.
Tristan is impatient to pass and immediately makes a dive for the inside of Clive's car, into a gap which is already closing as Clive heads for the apex. Contact is made spinning both cars off of the circuit. Clive is spun into the tyres but Tristan is sent a good distance into the infield.
Clive regains the tarmac and sets off after Bastian and Tom. Tristan aims his car at the tarmac and accelerates across the grass arriving at the track without regard for any approaching car. Tristan materialises directly in front of Clive and is punted back into the grass requiring an S/R.

There have been multiple comments/reports about Will Bennet's driving in this race and I will attempt to deal with that in this section.
It would be time consuming, and probably pointless, to list every transgression by Will in this race. But there are a few generalised areas for concern.

a) In the first few laps Will's enthusiasm exceeds his ability, and the grip of his cold tyres, causing him to rear end 3 other cars through outbraking himself. Although he tops the rankings in this race for rear end shunts he was by no means alone in this regard.

b) Later in the race Will is involved in incidents during overtaking moves, including one attempt to unlap himself which results in contact and spins.

c) From lap 15 to lap 20 Will impedes the cars of Bastian and Tom ( + Clive and Tris ) which indirectly results in an incident mentioned above.

Although Will Bennet has been registered with UKGPL for approx 12 months, he has not participated in that many races. Pete Bennet, Will's father is a regular driver in UKGPL and has reported that Will has been driving in another sim which does not demand the same levels of behaviour and etiquette that we expect in UKGPL.
At times Will displayed some genuine pace and ability, but there is more to racing in GPL than just posting fast lap times on a clear track. Other drivers expect anyone racing with UKGPL to observe certain standards.
Because Will's actions had a direct effect upon other drivers, and the final positions, it would be unfair not to impose penalties, especially as other drivers have been penalised in this race. Applying any more severe penalties would be pointless as one cannot finish lower than last and it is more important that lessons are learned for the next race.

Advice
a)At the beginning of a race when cars are inevitably closer, tyres are cold and tanks are full of fuel greater care should be taken.

b) When attempting a pass be sure that you give enough space. GPL is notorius for its "collision box" which often will detect contact when none is made, so it is always wise to give more room if you can.

c) A driver must be aware that he cannot "race" and impede cars that are trying to lap him. Unless he is able to clearly pull away from the cars that have gained a lap on him, he MUST give then an opportunity to pass. Please read the Quick Reference Guide on the Announcements page.

Server replay time: 0h01m40s

In the first lap at 1min 40secs T. Bot rejoins the track and hits D. Rainier causing a chain reaction behind involving other four cars that can not avoid the incident in front.

David has asked that no penalty is given

Season 40 takes us on a Scandinavian based competition with a few excursions into other Northern countries.

The 1st race of the series takes us to Keimola in Finland, which we have used before.
The track was used in the 1960s for Formula 2 races but it never hosted a Formula 1 race. Originally opened in 1966
( which raises the question of how we are running a 1965 race here??) the track was abandoned in 1978. The pit exit is a bit unusual in that it isn't near the start line.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.
Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Handicapping
Drivers are required to drive all 7 cars and no car can be driven more than twice.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 reported incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Unlimited resets will be allowed with no need to make a S&G in the pit lane.

Congrats up front!

I've only driven the 65 Lotus previously,  I hope the other cars are more ameniable than the BT7 Smiley
(although any of them is clearly outstanding in capable hands!)

Well, there were couple of dragged-out/slow-speed scraps  (anyone else on the same corner or straight is a scrap in my book).

At the end, Pete was catching catching catching & was past.
I was hoping to have a go at him using his slipstream in the last lap or so, but I was caught by lapping cars & after letting them ease past, it was not to be.  But was still fun anyway - congrats fella!

Time to download a bunch of new tracks/try some new cars...

Cheers,
Dave.

Welcome back. The 65s are so much fun to drive. In the race I made silly mistakes and three times I found myself exploring the grassy areas. Outbraking myself into turn one seemed to be the most common mistake. Dave, I would have caught you about 5 laps earlier had I not done exactly that. It was a great chase to the end, just too bad that you had to make way for the leaders and couldn't hunt me down.

The BT7 is one of my favourites. It's super nimble and, if you get the gearing right, it can be competitive. I had my first ever UKGPL victory in the BT7 last year at Philip Island. The car was on rails.

It was a nice fight with Tom, but i don't understand Will Bennet fighting for his life while we try to lap him and take a high risk for our race to overtake instead of lapping ??

Exactly the same happened to me.
I was in front of Dave and Pete ...Benett and was hoping a nice fight with them when Will, that I just hardly lapped, rearended me.
Nice team job for the Benetts team  Angry

I don't know if there is something in the UKGPL rules about behaviour of lapped drivers.

Congrats to Fulvio! You had a perfect race, caught me in the early laps and settled a clean safe pass. I tried to follow and pressure you but you did no mistakes and had some extra acceleration out of the last turn.  thumbup1

Thx Leo, it was a nice battle. I was surprised to run in 3rd position after the start passing Clive and Tris that had a poor start. Later I found that I had a very stable setup to try a move at T1 with you and later with Axel that unluckily run wide. Too bad you lost a bit of time in the end avoiding a crash at T1 that gave me a bit of breath in the final lap. I think that we did 36 lap in the process of lapping Pete on the straight cause I didn't see the flagman.  laugh
I watched replay and there was some unneccessary blocking by lapped cars.  Roll Eyes

Hi All. Please don't be too harsh. Will has a lot to learn regarding race-craft. He feels really bad about what happend at Keimola and I'll be giving him some on-line etiqutte lessons before Round 2. He's been driving a lot of Modern F1 sims against fellow teenagers where the driving is aggressive (to say the least). Now that he's amongst gentlemen, he'll quickly learn how to drive more appropriately.

I remember my first few races online and I was horrible. I was used to racing against the AI. Learning how to drive is easy, learning how to drive quickly takes a little longer, learning race-craft takes a life-time. I've learnt SO much from racing you guys over the past 12 months and I'm extrememly grateful. Please be patient. In time, Will will learn the same.

Remember - we were ALL rookies once upon a time.  Wink

My only grievance was that he out-qualified me. He's obviously got the potential to be quick.

On another note, by the time he's my age, UKGPL will be in season 112

We understand Pete and we are all armatures racing for fun and no other reward than that and bragging rights. I understand mistakes, we all make them in virtual racing, and it's noble to acknowledge them and ask for forgiveness. Note that I wasn't involved in any incident this race.

Keep practicing Will and remember to respect the others around and have fun.

But it's just hard to swallow that usual guy, that race this for ages, and just here pushed some five guys out of his way, like every other race.
