Prototype Potluck Round 5
The Riverside 165

Welcome to Round 5 of the Prototype Potluck series - This time held at Riverside International Raceway in California and taking in 165 hot, sweaty miles!

Keep in mind the advice from last time regarding driving to your own and your competitors cars strengths and weaknesses and this one should turn out to be quite a close challenge.

Qualifying etiquette
To match most race events of the late 60's we are having a combined 1 hour practice and qualifying.
Due to this the track will contain drivers who are practising and setting up and also drivers who are running a qualifying lap.
If you are on a hot lap please turn your headlights on - and remember to turn them off again once finished.
If you are simply practising or working on setups please keep your headlights off and try not to hold up drivers who are on hot laps if you can avoid it - you'll want them out of your way when it's your own turn to try and qualify. Wink

Please note that the start time has been moved slightly forward from our traditional time - this is to allow the race to finish at a similar time to normal

Practice/Qualifying: 19:00 (60 mins)
Race                  :  20:00 (50 laps)

Cars allowed:

Drivers must either post their car choice here or PM it to me by 18:00(UK time) on Tuesday the 18th. This is so I can ensure the server has the correct numbers of cars available. You can inform me in advance if you wish to do so.
Drivers who have posted/sent their preference will get priority, so turning up without 'booking' your car could result in your being being removed from the server to make room for someone who has booked. You will then have to rejoin in something that is available whether you have practised in it or not.
You can see my own car choice listed in the Series announcement thread.

Porsche 908LH

P4 Fezza for me please. Had a go at the setup and it feels much better around here.

I had a game crash on the server yesterday. Something about FMOD. Will try to re-install the track and hope that is stays up wednesday...

FMOD is the sound engine AC uses, so it's very unlikely to be the track - Due to it's age I don't remember it having any sound emitters around it (Le Mans does have some, but then I don't think you had any issues there?)

If you're running CM and allow it to auto update things then it's possible someone has been buggering about and uploaded something that doesn't work properly.
If that's the case then all you can really do is disable the auto-improve feature and then track-down the files for Riverside that have been added. I seem to remember they get hidden in the apps folder in your user directory.

Any tips on how to improve the front grip on the 908? I didn't have too much problem at Le Mans, but here it just wants to understeer everywhere, even going quite slow it does not want to turn. Currently stuck at around 1.53 to 1.55 laptimes, would like to knock at least a couple of seconds off that but puzzled how to do so.

It's a balance thing as on the others.
I tend to reduce rear wing to nearly nothing in the 908 for slower tight tracks, that plus soft front ARBs and stiffer rears will make it want to turn.
It will also make it want to keep turning so you'll need to work on your balance for it.

You can also try reducing rear negative toe, or even trying some positive toe.
I think it has an adjustable diff - open the throttle and coast settings and it'll turn better on and off throttle - again it'll be looser too, especially at turn-in for corners.

Higher rear height Vs front will also increase turn - same trade off's as the other bits I mentioned.

Your best bet is to start with a near open diff, and then play with the suspension options till it turns well - and then tighten the diff back up until it stops trying so hard to kill you but still turns Smiley

I'm just looking at those lap times and thinking how the Lola T70 seems a fair competitor to the 917k.   Thoughts for the future...

Thanks Tim. I have been working on it myself this afternoon & have improved it a lot, not exactly what you suggested, but as you said I gained grip at the front which made the rear looser so kept adjusting to get a good turn in without losing the rear. Additionally getting a bit more acquainted with the foibles of the track & perfecting lines helped too. I am not quite as quick as Max's time, but now got down to 1.49.1.
