Prototype Potluck Round 9
The Sebring 9(ty) Minutes

Welcome to Round 8 of the Prototype Potluck series - Bring your paracetamols/Aspirins' as it's going to get bumpy Grin
As it's Sebring and really just a tiny bit famous for it's timed races ours will also be timed at 90 minutes. Bonus points should be awarded to all 908/917's to finish on their original gearboxes - but they won't be, so don't get your hopes up Tongue

Keep in mind the advice from last time regarding driving to your own and your competitors cars strengths and weaknesses and this one should turn out to be quite a close challenge.

For the avoidance of any doubt (again):
We are using the full pitlane exit for this race - drivers should not cross the white blend line until the 2 lines become just 1 (This is roughly where the line starts curving left).
In addition we're using real world track limits here - so in the final turn if it's tarmac/concrete, it's legal!

Qualifying etiquette
To match most race events of the late 60's we are having a combined 1 hour practice and qualifying.
Due to this the track will contain drivers who are practising and setting up and also drivers who are running a qualifying lap.
If you are on a hot lap please turn your headlights on - and remember to turn them off again once finished.
If you are simply practising or working on setups please keep your headlights off and try not to hold up drivers who are on hot laps if you can avoid it - you'll want them out of your way when it's your own turn to try and qualify. Wink

Please note that the start time has been moved slightly forward from our traditional time - this is to allow the race to finish at a similar time to normal

Practice/Qualifying: 19:00 (60 mins)
Race                  :  20:00 (90 Minutes - no extra lap)

Cars allowed:

Drivers must either post their car choice here or PM it to me by 18:00(UK time) on Tuesday the 15th. This is so I can ensure the server has the correct numbers of cars available. You can inform me in advance if you wish to do so.
Drivers who have posted/sent their preference will get priority, so turning up without 'booking' your car could result in your being being removed from the server to make room for someone who has booked. You will then have to rejoin in something that is available whether you have practised in it or not.
You can see my own car choice listed in the Series announcement thread.

x3 takes us as close as you'd want to go in AC - we'll finish at 16:30 which normally seems fairly shady to me!
I'll see what point it gets silly tomorrow/the weekend, and might extend it if the track remains visible (the multiplier only uses whole numbers).

Oddly the 917's sucked here (So you, me and who-ever else plumps for one have history to beat) - Steve McQueen nearly won the (9 hour) race in a 908 back in 1970, only to be pipped on the final lap by a 512 Cool

wow really, you'd think the 917 would prevail at a track like Sebring. Interesting, probably more like bad luck! maybe Max was driving it at the time  laugh

edit...i wasnt far wrong  Grin  https://www.evo.co.uk/enzo/203846/ferrari-512s-vs-porsche-917-at-sebring-1970-greatest-races

A massive shame we havent got Ferrari 512's in AC  Cry

i think the GT40's would be nice to race here too. Am hoping a few take up the 917 for this round so i have guys to race rather than chasing Tims shadow  Grin

On the lighting, was more after a nice setting sun / orange sky than twilight as it fits my romantic image of long distance racing in the states, but having said that i'm probably thinking of Daytona than Sebring  Tongue  I did a mixed class event in iR recently at Daytona with LMP's and GT cars and it looked amazing with an orange sky backdrop as dusk settled in.  Cool Just adds to the atmos.

ps can i take the Larousse Hippy skinned 917? or Salzburg Red/white  wub I have a 1:18 diecast of the Hippy 917, ironically its nose to nose with my 1:18 330 P4 in my sim room/study.  Cool

The 512S is available as an add on to the Prototype Legends pack and is a very decent drive (as are the other cars in the pack)....

https://www.f1classic.net/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35

Haven't tested or decided what to take yet, I'll see what others choose to see what might give me the best racing.

crikey i forgot all about that Prototype pack. Do the cars actually manage to compete with each other in that modpack? Little sceptical about some of the mods that come from that site. They generally look great but then have some shoddy physics or bs performance going on. Guess they need a couple of motorsport grognards to really sort the physics and performance figures out properly.  Undecided
Have just re-downloaded it so if i get some spare time might try the 512 out v the 917 at Sebring, for my own amusement  Smiley

From GPL's GT mod, and on a 60's version of Sebring as a result - but yes, they are rather nice here, although slow even in their day...
I think this may have been a world record time back when I did it 11 years ago, I'm guessing it isn't any more though....

The 512 seems roughly on par with Kunos' 917. The MKIV GT40 is also very nice as are the two Lola MKIIIs.

While you're there check out the TransAm Legends 2.0 pack and the GTC60's packs, nothing wrong with those...

just tried a few recon laps (after a few pints of ale  Tongue ) - not a bad version of Sebring but the kerbs are awful and quite wrong. A lot of mod tracks in AC suffer these silly ramped up kerbs. Makes you think the mod creator has never been on or near a real track  Sad
Dont suppose the kerbs are an easy file to swap with a decently done track? not sure how the file structure works for AC tracks. Undecided

Kerbs are physical models, if I had the kit to make stuff We'd have had a good Coombe years ago Wink
Also those kerbs are mere pups compared to some of the monsters on the Nords!

Ah fair enough, wasn’t sure if kerbs were just a component file of a track that could be swapped out.
Shame as these really funnel the driving line and you can’t take a bit of kerb like you should be able too here.  Sad I haven’t tried tweaking dampers yet to ride them better but doubt it’ll work as these just bounce you off them.

Sure you can, you just need to back out of the throttle and modify your suspension a bit. Sebring is so bumpy that the kerbs shouldn't really pose too much issue (The 917 is tricky on them as it naturally understeers so much - I took the Alfa 33 out last week here though and that is glorious over the kerbs (and in general of course).

Just drive like you would in an Ozy V8 and you'll be fine Smiley

i havent found Sebring half as bumpy as i am used too! In iR you can really feel the bumpy surface, especially with a DD wheel setup, its a proper work out. This 917 is also a good workout but in a different way. Not got much experience with setting up this beauty but found another 2 secs yesterday with some alcohol free laps  Grin more work to do though as not quite happy with the handling and still hate these kerbs!

Yeh well iRacing has a proper laser scan.  We have a guess made by some talented guy in his basement.  I think I'd rather have a guessed track and good physics / FFB than that snake oil iRacing peddle as the ultimate simulator Tongue

Can someone please direct link me the download for that 512 though,  I'd like to try it and maybe mess with the physics (imagine a nicely bop'd field of 917/512/T70s) BUT I'm not signing up to pirate racers to do it Shocked
