Season 40 – 1968 LATE – Round 4 – Ardmore Aerdrome

Welcome to a new season of the 1968 Mod. A slight change in the format, we will use the 68 Late car set, not the Early. The track selection has a theme. The first 5 races will be held on Tasman series tracks from Australia & New Zealand. The second half of the season will be staged on tracks in the USA.

There is no handicapping but drivers will have a limited choice of chassis for each round. The cars are divided into 5 groups, each group will have cars of similar performance level. We start with Group V and work our way up to Group I and then repeat. Group I is the fastest cars available in Formula 1 for 1968.

For the fourth round we travel east from Australia to New Zealand. Converted from an airfield, Ardmore Aerodrome is New Zealand’s most famous racing venue from the 1950’s and 60’s. Laying 20 miles south of Auckland, the track is built from the X shape of two intersecting runways on completely flat ground.

The car set is Group IV. Drivers may use any of the following cars but you will be required to use a different one for Race 9.

Honda RA301
Eagle T1G
Matra MS10

Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 40 general rules on the details.

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

ADVICE ON LAPPING. Some of the tracks in this series are short and narrow. The fastest drivers will be lapping backmarkers, perhaps more than once each race. For this year we have posted a multi-language guide to UKGPL rules on the Announcements page. This includes the etiquette for lapping. In summary the lapped car should remain on the racing line and avoid sudden or unexpected movements. To avoid holding up the lapping car the lapped driver can make way where safe to do so or gradually ease off the acceleration on a straight. Extra care should be taken by second or third lapping cars who may be closely following first lapping car.

Unlimited number of Shift-Rs are allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Sorry about L1 crash. My fault. I was so busy looking for Tris in my mirrors on the right that I failed to spot a Honda coming up on the left-hand side.

I did the decent thing and waited for everyone to get going again and re-commenced from the back of the pack. Also L9, I bumped Evil and again, my fault. I waited for him to re-take his place before re-commencing battle. I was catching Bastian but on L38 I clipped an oil drum. Happy to settle for fourth.

Sorry for the mayhem but a pleasure to race with you gentlemen.

Bernie please have a look at lap 10 while I was trying to lap you. You were 5 sec. out of pace, but it wasn't easy to pass. We went both off at T2, then when we tangled at the hairpin we collected Pete too, then again side by side the following turn... Huh

I had a good start, but I was smashed twice on the haybails at T1 by cars spinning or wide. Got stuck and have to wait for all the cars to pass. Was in pursuing all the race making a couple of wide in the process. Sorry to Clive for have stolen his place while he was searching for a needle in a straw  Grin

Fulvio , Not sure what you are refering to here "hard to pass" Huh  unless you mean the crazy dive you make up the inside of the corner when you collect me and we get tangled up !

By Lap 6 I got lapped by the leader , a few laps later everyone and his dog had lapped me , I was a nothing more than a mobile chicane so I dont see why you had trouble passing . The Blue flag does not give you absolute right of way , and especially when you had such a straight line advantage and could pass easily after the corner .

I retired from the race early because realised my speed was  useless and dont see how I can compete against such faster drivers . because of that I dont think I will be racing any more in the 68 series

I'm always installing new tracks on the ALLTRACK.INI file, I reached 225 entries on it, but I never experienced such an issue before...

np Pete, i think gpl made an early contact, we were running quite straight....took it safe home from chaos lap one, only the engine made it only half way so i was quite heavy and slow in the finish.
