Season 40 – 1968 LATE – Round 5 – Pukehoke 66

Welcome to a new season of the 1968 Mod. A slight change in the format, we will use the 68 Late car set, not the Early. The track selection has a theme. The first 5 races will be held on Tasman series tracks from Australia & New Zealand. The second half of the season will be staged on tracks in the USA.

There is no handicapping but drivers will have a limited choice of chassis for each round. The cars are divided into 5 groups, each group will have cars of similar performance level. We start with Group V and work our way up to Group I and then repeat. Group I is the fastest cars available in Formula 1 for 1968.

The fifth round takes in New Zealand’s North Island at Pukekohe, around 25 mile from Auckland.
Originally opened for racing in 1963, Pukehoke is a converted aerodrome and took over from the Ardmore to hots the New Zealand Grand Prix. The 1968 race was won by Chris Amon in a Ferrari 246T.

A special mention goes to Franceso, who created this track.

The car set is Group V. Drivers may use any of the following cars but you will be required to use a different one for Race 10.

Ferrari 312
Lotus49/49b
Brabham BT26
Mclaren M7A

Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 40 general rules on the details.

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

ADVICE ON LAPPING. Some of the tracks in this series are short and narrow. The fastest drivers will be lapping backmarkers, perhaps more than once each race. For this year we have posted a multi-language guide to UKGPL rules on the Announcements page. This includes the etiquette for lapping. In summary the lapped car should remain on the racing line and avoid sudden or unexpected movements. To avoid holding up the lapping car the lapped driver can make way where safe to do so or gradually ease off the acceleration on a straight. Extra care should be taken by second or third lapping cars who may be closely following first lapping car.

Unlimited number of Shift-Rs are allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please, excepting emergencies, no chat until Session Completed in qualification. No chat in the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Surprised myself by running the whole race without any crashes, spins or off track excursions. Should have finished just the 1 lap down but I moved aside to let Tristan past one corner before the finish line.
The hairpin corners were a bit of a challenge but I generally quite liked this track. Many thanks to Fran for building it.

Difficulties getting into rhythm with car and track.

So it was just the second part of the race to be satisfied with.
Nice fights with phil and fulvio again

That's really a nice track, Francesco really made a small gem!
I'm quite satisfied with my speed and pace on it.
Unfortunately a small contact caused a steering issue and I quit.
I really hope we will race here again in the future.
Cheers

I enjoyed driving the Lotus around here, even though my set-up was a little twitchy. I had good pace but I couldn't keep up with Evil once he'd got ahead. Well driven there to take P2 on the podium, Evil. I had a couple of self-inflicted visits to the grass which held me back but I'm more than happy to finish P4.

As ever, Tris was driving at a blistering pace. Very impressive.

Franceso - this is a really great track. Thank you so much for building it. I take my hat off to anyone who can build one. Bravo!

Tris,
On the UKGPL homepage find the "Replay" link in the top left corner - it has all the replays for every series in Season 40 ( and 39)
