Season 40 1967F1 WORKS – Round 7 – Monsanto Park 1959

The seventh race in the 1967 Grand Prix Works series finds us in Portugal. The street circuit of Monsanto Park to be precise. Built on parkland, the circuit was considered difficult to drive because it crossed so many different types of surfaces, including tramlines at one point. The track hosted numerous races from 1954 to 1959, but only one race qualified as a Formula One event: the 1959 Portuguese Grand Prix, won by Stirling Moss. He won the race in the twilight hours, since the race was purposefully started late in the day to avoid the intense late summer sun.

Hello sports friends,
finally I want to start with you again next sunday (Monsanto chosing the Ferrari).  Grin
After the USB steering control board in my old race simulator had said goodbye in December (I hope he soon finds a new owner, instead of end up on the scrap! If you are interested, just feel free to contact me!),
I decided to buy a new racing simulator instead of replacing the 10 Euro cheap USB steering control board.
In the end, my whole hobby room was renovated, from a new radiator to painting the walls and so on …  Roll Eyes
Now, more than three months later, everything has turned out great, looks top notch and feels very realistic, but my old racing seat and wheel was much better! So I still need to work on the ergonomics as much as on my speed.
I am looking forward to my first test with you all and I am curious how it will look like with fun, speed and condition.
See you on track!  Smiley

Hey Johnny, yes I'm looking forward to it, if I get permission too. At the moment it doesn't look like it. It still says "You are not licensed to enter this series"! I hope our admins notice soon enough that I signed up 3 days ago. Smiley

The track is very slippery on cold tyres so I was trying to take it easy on the first few laps but not everyone had the same idea. A few too many crashes, so hot a great race for Works standard drivers. I managed to pick my way through the wreckage without any damage but I got rear ended on lap 2 and after that my car was handling badly so I slid off and couldn't extract myself from the straw bales. It wouldn't have made much difference anyway, I was really struggling with the Lotus here. Tris and Doni showed what the car is capable of, great lap times gents.

The starting grid should be expanded in the distance between riders, I like 20 m. On a track like Monsanto the number of retirements in T1 was very, very high. Disappointing!

Coming back at night to see the result I have a big surprise, a superb victory for our hero Doni!!!!! Congratulations my friend, this result certainly gave me a lot of joy, Doni is a true single-seater driver from the 70's, and seeing him win made me very happy!
Now Farina with her great second place takes the lead in the championship, well done Farina!
Closing the podium our current champion Uli who was returning this Sunday.

Well done Doni, a win that has been deserved for a long time for my teammate.

My race was effectively ended before T1 on lap 1. Like Phil, I was aware that grip was low on cold tyres and also from experience T1-T2 is an accident black spot, so I held back.
Sure enough there was an incident up ahead in T1 which I was comfortably placed to avoid, but there was nothing that I could do about the missile that hit me from behind. Although the car was still driveable it soon became obvious that the suspension was damaged and the rear end wanted to get out of every corner first  Undecided.
I struggled on for two laps, but it was clear that I was going to be a hazard to anyone following, so I quit.

Grats to all those who made it to the finish and good to see Uki back on track.

Well how 'bout that!  A surprise win on this most difficult circuit.  The Lotus worked a treat and I didn't put a foot wrong the whole meeting.  This won't happen too often I can assure you.  Drinks are on me, lads!  Smiley

Ricky a splendid run to P2.  Bravo, amigo!  And Uli taking P3 after the horror show of the first lap for him.  He surely must be as surprised and elated as I to stand on the podium after that start.

Dear me...  Four runners eliminated before a single mile in the books.  Alex, Clay, Jonny and Leo having their hopes dashed to bits.  So sorry, fellas.  With Bot spinning in the Clover Leaf and all behind having to take avoiding action, it left me clear to lead with only Ricky in close company.  Over the next laps, I gradually pulled away but it was never a comfortable walk in the park as I noted that Ricky was not all that far behind my pace in qualifying.  A single slip on my part and the results could have read otherwise.  There are so many places on this circuit where one can come to grief.

I rely exclusively on my pit board for data...Pribluda is for wimps...so as the laps reeled off, I half expected to see Ricky's name disappear off the board to be replaced by the likes of Bot, Jonny or Uli charging through.  Never happened.  Of course, I had no idea as to the mayhem that ensued on Lap01 down in the Clover Leaf.  Just eased away to a comfy lead by the end so pleased to have such a dream race meet.
