Season 40 1967F1 PRIVATEERS – Round 8 – BALCARCE

For the eighth race in the 1967 Grand Prix Works series, we will visit Balcarce in Argentina.  Balcarce was the birthplace of the legendary Argentinian driver Juan Manuel Fangio and we will be racing on the circuit that bears his name. The Autódromo Juan Manuel Fangio was opened in his honour on 18th January 1971. The circuit has hosted events in the Turismo Carretera series but it has never hosted Formula 1 races and to this day remains rather underdeveloped.

A PB of 1:35+ did nothing but put me exactly in the middle of the qualifying grid. I'd seen on GPL Rank that half the field had better PBs than mine, so I had a good idea of what was likely to happen. It did, and pretty quickly. My Eagle easily outdragged Pete's Cooper at the drop of the flag, so now I had not only him but David and Dave behind me, all of them faster drivers (and the Daves both in Lotuses). I wasn't going to have a moment to myself all day.

I managed to fend off Dave for nine laps before I made an error coming to the S/F line on L16. That put David and Pete immediately on my tail. Coming out of T7 on L22 Pete and I touched and he went by me, only to go into the sand on T1 of the next lap. Pete quickly overtook David and resumed his inspection of my tail pipes. On L25 he rear-ended me as we were coming into T1, dropping me from third to fifth. At that point I was the last car running, miraculously still on the same lap with the winner, Eduardo.

I like this track a lot. It sweeps and flows beautifully like V.I.R. But it does produce some awfully close racing, especially when a slower driver in an Eagle manages to get ahead of faster drivers.  Smiley

A very lucky podium for me, after Axel, Philippe and Eric retired !
Moreover, Pete and Pepe had some troubles in the last laps.
I didn't overtake any other car on the track ...but I finished 3rd.

Pete with his Cooper was faster than me in Lotus, so I was just lucky to finish the race without mistakes.

Grats to Eduardo for his win.
Mathematically, only 3 drivers could still win this championship : Eduardo, Pete ...and me  Grin (but I have to win the 2 final races with Eduardo scoring less than 4 pts)

Apologies to Pete for the T1 bump , I gave him the place back tough he would have took it anyway sooner or later . Slowing to let Pete by was a bad idea as it turned out because that put me in the wrong place at the end of the lap when I collected ( T Boned ) Billy's Ferrari when he came unanounced  back across the track right in my path . Race Over  !
Sick because I put tons of practice in here over the hols and was hoping for a good finish .

     The worst season ever??

I have done only 17 laps in the last 5 Grand Prix.

My mind is starting to fail!
