Bastian enters the oval on the inside where the track is flat. He moves onto the banking too aggressively and loses control of the car at high speed. This causes a multi-car accident involving Andreas, Rainier, Phil & Fabio. Bastian has apologised for the accident. We do not penalise drivers under GPL rules for non-contact accidents but hopefully a lesson will learned.

Season 40 – 1968 LATE – Round 8 – Daytona 24 Hour

Round eight of the 1968 Late series takes place at the Daytona International Speedway at Daytona Beach, Florida. The venue is famous for the oval used for the prestigious Daytona 500 NASCAR race. We will use the sports car course which combines high speed oval racing with big 180 degree turns often seen on US tracks.

There is no handicapping but drivers will have a limited choice of chassis for each round. The cars are divided into 5 groups, each with similar performance level. We start with Group V and work our way up to Group I and then repeat. Group I is the fastest cars available in Formula 1 for 1968.

The car set is Group III. Drivers may use any of the following cars APART FROM THE ONE YOU USED IN RACE 3 AT BATHURST.

Matra MS11
McLaren M5A
Cooper T86b

Full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please read the season 40 general rules on the details.

Please read the specific rules for 68 series on the 1968 Early championship standings page.

ADVICE ON LAPPING. Some of the tracks in this series are short and narrow. The fastest drivers will be lapping backmarkers, perhaps more than once each race. For this year we have posted a multi-language guide to UKGPL rules on the Announcements page. This includes the etiquette for lapping. In summary the lapped car should remain on the racing line and avoid sudden or unexpected movements. To avoid holding up the lapping car the lapped driver can make way where safe to do so or gradually ease off the acceleration on a straight. Extra care should be taken by second or third lapping cars who may be closely following first lapping car.

Unlimited number of Shift-Rs are allowed with no need to make Stop & Go.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please, excepting emergencies, no chat until Session Completed in qualification. No chat in the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

I made a silly mistake on L1 which left me in a very lonely 5th place for most of the race. Clive joined me for some entertainment but he decided to eat some traffic cones and then he vanished. Phil then provided loads of entertainment for the last 7 laps of the race. Wow! that was fun. 0.09 sec between us at the line.

GPL is great when the racing is like this. Smiley thanks

I had a bad start, someone lost it on the infield at turn 2 and shot up onto the banking and I had nowhere to go. I had to reset and started last. I had a great dice with Bastian and AnGex before I managed to pull enough of a gap on them to break the tow. There was quite a big gap to Pete ahead but I was slowly catching him at a rate of about 50 metres per lap. With 7 laps to go I managed to get on his tail and we had a very enjoyable battle until the flag, thanks for the clean race Pete.

Sorry for the stupid start crash.

Afterwards, i realized having a little bit less topspeed, which made it tricky to overtake.

A barn-burner of a race!  Fulvio aced me at the line to steal P2.  Grrr...  Not hardly.  It was a toss-up and he out-foxed me.  Great stuff, FP!  And after the debacle of Panorama where we had some coming togethers all down to me, I was relieved not have made a stupid move that jeopardized either of us.

I fitted a tall first gear and was somewhat slow off the start.  Perhaps that turned out to be a good thing as an almighty shunt occurred at the very first corner with Bastian running on the apron...that's really out of bounds...and then losing it big time when he tried to back up onto the banking.  This is always a recipe for disaster.  I managed to squeak through but it caught out so many others.  Bad luck, gys.

I was pleased to be able to tack onto the lead serial but was fearful that my Matra V-12 was only moments away from grenading.  It was running really well above my comfort zone for revolutions.  After early laps with Evil Clive challenging from behind and Fulvio leading the way, the laps reeled off without dramas.  It seemed that Fulvio got a better launch up onto the banking and most likely, that was due to my tall first gear.  No matter.  The slipstream had me close through the banking and I could threaten as we crossed the SFline.  I was in no hurry to make a bid for the place and tried to gauge my chances for a last-lap attack.  We lost Clive around mid-race so it was down to a two-car duel for the final placings.  I made a pass just as we entered T3 on Lap25 but Fulvio re-passed just before the SFline.  Starting the last lap, Fulvio had a decent lead as we gained the banking but I got a lovely tow to close rapidly and be right on his tail as we entered T3.  I couldn't quite make the pass there and followed to exit T4 and approach the SFline just a whisker behind.  Fulvio, the old fox, covered low forcing me to make a bid on the high side and I just couldn't quite make it.  NUTS!  Great race!  Smiley

Late in the going, I was concerned that I might be a little short on fuel and started to short-shift to save some for a last-lap attack.  Crossed the SFline with only 26psi left on the dial.  Wouldn't have been able to make another lap at speed.

Grin great race Doni, I was surprised to be competitive in the Matra before the race. I wouldn't have bet to done it at the line, but I think you was a bit late to get the outside and pass me.
