Season 41 - Ferrari Challenge  ROUND 7  1968L  Torino

The penultimate race in the Ferrari Challenge, finds us at Turin in Italy: The year is 1968. Parco del Valentino (also known as Valentino Park) is a popular public park in Turin. It is located along the west bank of the Po river.  Several races were held here between 1935 and 1955, it is the 1955 layout that we will be using for this race.  This is a very challenging circuit with virtually no run-off areas, plenty of undulations and blind corners.  Discretion is the better part of valour for this track. The 1955 race held at this circuit was a non-championship formula 1 race called the VII Gran Premio del Valentino. The race was won by Alberto Ascari in a Lancia D50. This was Lancia’s first ever victory in a Formula 1 race.

Please note: We are using the v3 version of this track. It is the final and best version with a new layout, new objects and new textures. Ginetto also moved the Start/Finish line to the correct place according to pictures from the real race in 1955. We are NOT using the older version which has a track directory called turin55.

Pete was in a class of his own tonight. A brilliant pole and an easy win. A lucky P2 for me. I managed to squeeze past Axel at T1 on L1 when he spun, and I then picked up 3 more places when Tris, Enrique and Tom all made individual unforced errors. So, after just 2 laps I was in P2 with Pete about 500 metres ahead and pulling away. Fortunately for me and unluckily for Tom, he had to wait for the entire field to pass by before he could get going again. I settled down and tried to do consistent laps but before long I had Evil hounding me. I think he must have had less wing than me (I had 10F and 10R) because he was very quick on the straights and at one point he passed me on the first "straight" section, but I got back past on the brakes into Borgo Medioevale. A few laps later Evil crashed and I managed to eke out a bit of a gap back to third. I kept my eye on Pribluda and I could see Tom making steady progress back through the field. I couldn't ease off a fraction as Tom put me under huge pressure. I managed to hang on to snatch P2 but another couple of laps and I'm sure Tom would have had me. Great recovery drive Tom.

Wow! That was a surprise victory for me.  Shocked

I took an old setup for Zandvort and went with it. Change the gearing a bit and hoped it would work. It did. The Ferrari was on rails and the gearing spot on. I usually make a mess of the start so I was even more surprised that I was still up front going into T1. I could pull away quite easily, even with a full tank and cold tyres. I soon found a rhythm with my only scare coming on L24 when I got it a bit too sideways and had to use the pavement to re-align my direction of travel. Having seen one of the other Ferraris pop an engine (Andreas I think?) I eased off the revs a bit whilst concentrating on keeping Phil behind me. I still can't quite believe that I won this with so little drama. As the modern formula one drivers would say, I would like to thank my team and mechanics for giving me such a great car to drive (blah blah blah).

See you at Imola where I will resume my normal position at the back.

Phil, thanks once again for hosting this round and well done on a great drive for P2.

Great drive Pete and Phil! Having a spin and ending up facing the wrong way with the entire field approaching was stressful, glad I was mostly out of the track. I did have to wait for almost the entire field to pass, only Doni and Enrique left me space to rejoin the race. Then the fun began, I got the pleasure of racing with the rest of the field, what a blast. When I finally made it to 3rd place, I started trying to close the gap to Phil, but each lap my pit board showed the gap remained about the same. It wasn't until Phil got in traffic that I was able to start bringing the gap down. Not sure if I had anything left to challenge Phil if there had been more laps. Fantastic drive Phil, you earned the spot, and Pete was in the zone for sure. Thanks for the fun race everyone! Thanks for organizing and hosting the races!

Not that I know of, my 12 cylinders were running smooth all the way down.  Cool
The only time I had trouble was when Evil  Evil lost it in the last chicane and I had no place to go. So that cost me 2 Spots I think. But all in all starting from 7. and finish in 4. and therefor being the best of the rest is not so bad. I could not ask for more.  smartass Especially with a gift from Cookie in the last lap.  Smiley Fuel is precious these days, but anyway you got to fill in enough into the Tank.  tank
So congratulations to the Podium!  thumbup2

It was me that blew the engine while Pete was lapping me, one more frustration after the big pile up that followed when Evil lost it. At least six cars were bouncing each other tryng to pass over. I managed to not hit anyone, but I was clipped by another car and I was stuck in the haybale. Had to wait for all the field before to reset. Then I had a nice battle with Eric for last position.
