Season 41 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 7 – Works - Brno

For the seventh race in the 1955 Grand Prix series we visit Brno in Czechoslovakia. The original circuit which dates from 1931 was approximately 18 miles (29 km) of public roads on the outskirts of Brno. The start was located in Bosonohy and it ran in an anti-clockwise direction through Kejbaly, Libusino, Kohouvotice, Žebětín, Ostrovacice and Veselka. The circuit retained this layout until 1937 when war brought racing to a close. In 1949 Brno re-opened and on 25 September 1949, a Grand Prix race was held on the street circuit.  The race was run clockwise on a shorter 11.1 miles (17.8 km) layout, which turned right at Veselka, bypassed Ostrovacice and entered Žebětín from the south rather than the west. In spite of a crowd in excess of 400,000 people, this would be the last Grand Prix for cars on the old street circuit. The race was won by Peter Whitehead a Ferrari 125. Whitehead had several race wins, including the 1938 Australian Grand Prix and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1951, but he is also notable as the first person to whom Enzo Ferrari ever sold a Formula One car. It is the same car he drove to victory in this race. In fact, the 125 was the first Formula 1 car Ferrari produced ready for the inaugural Formula 1 season in 1950. Numerous changes were made to the street circuit until it was finally closed in 1987 in order to move the racing onto the newly purpose-built race circuit situated just off the original course, between Ostrvacice and Zebetin where the races continue to this day.

Comiserations Leo.  that was such bad luck.

You had enough time in hand to set fire to the bales and get out that way!

Thanks, Leo. A surprise podium for me. Such bad luck... I feel your pain.

1 minute later:     Holy crap! I've just seen the standings leader board. How did that happen? The last round is going to be anyone's game. Looking forward to it already.  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin

Leo had a little frostbite? Or did he sleep from so far away that the others were?
  Well, congrats Clive!
For the last race, 200 pilots can try for the title!

Thanks Jonny.

A very strange race last night.
I couldn't do a proper qualifying lap for love nor money. I even had an engine explode on the out lap!
So I resorted to a series of race laps and settled for the best of them.

In the race, Yannick and Jonny took themselves out of the reckoning, which left me chasing Leo. When I say chasing you can read that as watching him disappear at 300m per lap.

With about three laps to go, I decided that I would not see Leo again and could relax. That's when the trouble started. My slow mode doesn't have fast enough reactions to slides to stay pointing in the right direction! I probably had four spins in one lap! It is something that I have to work on.

I switched back to fast mode and did my best lap on the final tour.

When I crossed the line the results confused the hell out of me and I had to quickly look at the replay to find Leo stuck in the bales at the last tight right hander.

Hard luck Leo, I guess that the brakes that you wanted had already been spent?
