Season 42 - 1955GP – Round 1 – Silverstone

The first race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Silverstone in England. Silverstone is built on the site of a World War II bomber base, RAF Silverstone, which opened in 1943. The track hosted the first F1 championship race in 1950. The British Grand Prix has been permanently held here since 1987. The airfield's three runways, in classic WWII triangle format, lie within the outline of the present track. The first two races were held on the runways themselves, with the 1949 International Trophy switching to the perimeter track. This arrangement was used for the 1950 and 1951 Grands Prix. In 1952 the start line was moved from the Farm Straight to the straight between Woodcote and Copse, and this layout remained largely unaltered for the following 35 years. The 1954 British Grand Prix was held at Silverstone and was won by Juan Manuel Fangio in a Mercedes M196 2.5 L8. Fangio raised Silverstone's lap record, breaking the 100 mph barrier with a lap of 100.35 mph. After an outing at Aintree in 1955, the British Grand Prix returned to Silverstone in 1956 when Fangio won again, this time in a Ferrari. Since 1975 the track has been extensively remodelled. Tonight we will be using the 1967 layout.

Mr. Molteni, i'm very sorry if i damaged your car. I broke my engine and tried to not move suddenly from the racing line, when i started to move to the right your car just appeared on my mirrors, i couldn't do much about it...

I'm happy with 4th but I could have done much better if I hadn't been busy making mistakes. At one point, Leo went from 4th to 1st in one swift move as Clive was wallowing around on the grass. Half a lap later I was thinking "Crikey, Leo's car is getting quite big" before realising that he was braking and I wasn't. This resulted in me dropping down to 7th. Phil made his Gordinin mighty wide for a couple of laps and 4th was given to me by Fulvio and Bastian who had self-inflicted spins in the closing laps. Bad luck guys. I feel your pain.

Super racing in the 55s. Grats to the Pods and see you all next time.

Qualified 7th and finished 7th. Happy with that. I don't usually take the Gordini because it is difficult to drive and pretty slow, but it is very economical on tokens! I had a few good battles with Tom, Pete and Bastian. I'll have a quicker car for the next round Grin

Grats to Leo on a dominant win and to Evil and Doni for well deserved podium places. To score a podium in this company is something to be proud of.

Decided to start in the race at 10:28 pm Smiley

so i went from the back and it was a lot of fun. 3 laps to go chasing fulvio i hit the wall after t1 and my engine was damaged.
I had to let go Pete for fifth.

thx for great racing.

I didn't engage properly 1st gear at the start and was left down to 6th or 5th before the first corner.

 stupid

I was rushing a bit in the early laps to get back up front and did a few mistakes, lost some braking points but nothing catastrophic. Found my race pace and was helped whith Pete and Clive's off track. You guys were pretty fast , don't know if I would be so lucky if you were more consistent.

Well...  That was a most unexpected result both in qualifying and the race.  Never dreamed I'd get that kind of punch out of the Vanwall.

Leo's note above explains my passing him on the run down to Copse off the grid.  It didn't take long for the status quo to resume, however, with Leo passing for the place a couple of laps later.  Settled in to P5 with Clive going great guns up in the lead.  I was actually thinking to myself, 'My!  Clive is on fire today.  Sure hope he gets the win.'  No sooner did that thought pass through my brain than I came across his Connie off the road in Club.  Groan...  I jinxed him.  Sad

Clive recovered to chase me down but I wasn't sure it was he on my tail for a couple of laps til my pitboard gave me the news.  Checked up a bit to let him through.  Found myself chasing Fulvio but not making much impression.  Pete fell off the road to hand me a place but I figured that he'd be a factor again later.  Fulvio had a lurid slide through Woodcote mid-race to hand me P3 but again, fully anticipated a resurgence of his fortunes.  Indeed, he was closing in but some minor slips cost him his chance.  I was surprised to see Bastian's name pop up on my board in the late going and it appeared that he was shaving a second per lap off my advantage.  Things might get a little racey in the final laps but a misstep cost him time and some places.  This allowed me to cruise in the last lap to a most unexpected podium.

Grats on a convincing win, Leo!  Great job by Clive for P2.  £££ in the bank for Blue Moose.  Smiley

Edit: Must mention some great drives put up by both Phil and Bernie.  A top 10, Bernie!  Well done.  ADC amigo, Tom Johnson, could have scored well but for some misfortunes.  Next time, TJ...

BTW, I intend to use the Vanwall exclusively for the season.

Cheers Doni for the kind remarks , I nearly didnt start because I am suffering from a chest infection atm but thought I would try a few laps to get points . In the end the race turned out better than I thought, though it was more down to the power of the Maseratti's than my driving skill .
Maybe I could have done a little better with a bit more determination plus a better set up. As it was I was content to do a steady drive to the finish .
At one point I had Phil within striking distance but I gave up trying to close the gap, Phil was flying in the Conny .
At least I finished without being lapped, which felt good,  but due I am shure by every other's car choice
