Buggerit....CTD going up the hill from St.Devote, hope my car was out of your way Erling.
Shouldn't grumble, can't remember the last time my pc did anything untoward, but that came from nowhere so is just annoying....Hope you all get to the finish.

Couldn't avoid clipping the right corner of your car, but didn't feel it, so no harm done apparently. Real shame; was a great race until then, although I got the impression you were only going as fast as needed to stay ahead - saving fuel to avoid stopping?

Yep, exactly that, the whole race was going to be run at a safe pace to then not have to stop. I also was keeping an eye on the tires, as the Merc did use them quite hard when pushing on the quick laps. I thought you had figured me out, but couldn't really see how you could get past as I think the Merc has a bit more straight-line speed than the M3.

Grats to Erling and commiserations to Daz for his disco.
A smaller than usual field for a number of reasons created a very lonely race for me, but getting lucky with a 3rd spot is better than I would normally expect.
I am a little puzzled by Daz'z plan to run without a stop. When you announced that you had put your setup "online" I confess that I did d/load it and take a look, driving it around for a couple of laps. But I decided against it because it appeared to be heavier on fuel than the setup I had created??
I was running a higher final drive than you and short shifting in places, but still only had a theoretical 32.5 laps?? Because Erling lapped me that gave me a comfy safety margin. So, I am a little perplexed as to how you could push so hard ( approx 3-4 secs a lap ) and still get 32 laps out of a tank of fuel. I wonder if I am dropping a gear too far into many of the corners. That would derive from years in GPL and keeping the engine spinning on cam to get the max power.
Any chance of bothering Matt for 2nd spot was ruined when in the course of only 2-3 laps I picked up a SnG for Cut Track. Have no idea why I suddenly lost the plot at that point, as I had only two warnings in practice when on Kami kaze laps and none for the last 15+ laps of the race?? Tony slipped past during my tea break in the pits but then suffered a loooong stop a few laps later. Matt also went "stop free" but I did not have the fuel to try and chase him down.

I had to pit at the halfway point Clive, for fuel and my tyres were shot.

Would have liked to use one of the turbo cars, as I keep pushing them ahead of me, but the Sierra was hopeless here with its tall gearing, and while the Supra worked, all the downshifts to 1st was driving me bonkers. My absence in the previous race sort of gave me a 'bonus drive', so settled for the Beemer instead. In my testing, it was the only car with a chance of completing the race without a fuel stop. Never tried the Holden though, so can't speak for that.
In my testing, the Merc would do between 27 & 28 laps on a tankful, so some serious saving would be required to avoid stopping. Thus would have been very interesting to see if Daz's strategy would have worked. It quickly dawned upon me that he was only going as fast as necessary to stay ahead, so fairly obvious that he was saving fuel and/or tyres.
His sudden vanishing kind of deflated the race. At the time, I had a steadily growing gap to the car behind of some 17 secs, and I knew I wouldn't have to stop, so that removed most of the excitement. Could ease off a little, to avoid something stupid happening. Became a lonely race as well - only other company was when I caught & lapped Clive. Wasn't too keen on passing him though, as I would then be obliged to go faster, with whatever potential risk of screwing up that included - tyres not exactly pristine anymore by then. Tony I must have passed in the pits, as I never saw his car.
Grats to Matt & Clive on the podiums, and of course commiserations to Daz for his misfortune.

Yep, it did require some saving for sure. My run in quali was on full tanks, so it was possible to run 45s in the race, which I was comfortably going slower than. My full tank pace from quali was giving me 28.3 laps, running 4-5 seconds a lap slower than that for any length of time would mean the fuel would be sipped....
@Clive, the setup was with a balanced fuel load, yes. As to how to save that amount of fuel, well I started with not revving out anywhere, the Merc goes to 11k revs or something, and I short shifted the whole race. I was also doing a fair amount of rolling into the bends having been on the brakes earlier and softer, downshifting later than if I was pushing on, and not taking full throttle out of the hairpins. All this meant that when I discoed I was showing 20 laps of fuel in XD, so pretty confident I could have saved enough to do the run. Ultimately, keeping corner speed high is a crucial component of fuel saving around places like Monaco I think, and there are many corners here don't forget, as it takes less throttle to then get back up to speed. Stop/start progress will cost fuel. Balancing act on the tires, as you keep pushing them on the way into the bends, but if not stressing them with lots of right foot that does help.
The only question I had was whether I could keep Erling off me, but realistically getting past at Monaco is nigh on impossible, so I believed if I could get track position from the start I should be able to place the car in a manner making it at least very difficult. I could see how hard Erling was trying to generate some kind of opportunity by the little nibbles at the wall, the exit of St.Devote being a favourite for his M3, but my car had enough to create a gap when I needed. The back end of the race would have been very interesting had it been tight on fuel, that is for sure.
