Lap 1 Zagaria – Enrique Farina, Tristan Bot, Bastian Grupp and JonnyO.
Tristan passes Enrique through Curvone which gives Enrique the chance to slipstream Tristan and pull out to pass at Zagaria. At the 100 yard marker board, Enrique is ahead by half a car length (at turn-in he has greater than 100% overlap) but he is on a tight line and has to brake harder than usual in order to make the corner. Tristan is determined to contest the overtake and takes the racing line, presumably in the expectation that Enrique will back out, but he doesn’t. Contact is made. Tristan spins but can continue. Enrique crashes heavily and is out of the race. Bastian and JonnyO get caught up in the wreckage, fortunately JonnyO can continue but Bastian is out of the race.
Having pulled out to overtake, Enrique didn’t see Tristan’s car in cockpit view or in his mirrors. Enrique was entitled to attempt the overtake and did get far enough ahead to claim the corner (over 100% overlap) but not enough to see Tristan in his mirrors and be able to safely regain the racing line. Hence his line into Zagaria was compromised and he had to brake heavier than usual.

In cockpit view Tristan would have seen Enrique disappear from his mirrors on the approach to Zagaria and should have realised that Enrique was alongside. In F10 view it is obvious where Enrique was. Tristan appears to try to slot in behind Enrique however he misjudges how much Enrique has braked and consequently he tags the rear wheel of the Eagle.

The guidelines for an ambitious overtake would suggest this is Tristan’s fault. Simple Ambitious Overtake Scenario 2 “The overtaking car HAD achieved a 100% or greater overlap at the point of turn-in. There was no loss of control by either driver. Penalty for overtaken driver.” However, there is some latitude for interpretation. Do we think the heavy braking by Enrique was a mitigating factor? Does this exonerate Tristan to the extent that we call this a “Contested Overtake: Racing Incident”?

I don’t think we can apportion any blame to Enrique, he did get ahead so he had the right to attempt the pass. If we blamed Enrique, we would effectively be outlawing block passes. It is perfectly acceptable to overtake up the inside even if it means the overtaken driver has to slow down. It wouldn’t be acceptable to take this to the extent that the overtaken car is forced off the track (because the overtaking car has left their braking so late they take up all the track and leave nowhere for the overtaken car to turn-in) but that didn’t happen in this case.

Enrique would have made the corner quite comfortably. Block passes are not illegal so Tristan should have yielded.

Season 42 – F1 67 WORKS – Round 2 – Enna Pergusa

For the second round of this championship,  we will go to the island of Sicily. The Autodromo di Pergusa circuit encircles Pergusa Lake, the only natural lake in Sicily. The circuit is also known as Enna-Pergusa, as the lake is located near the city of Enna. During the 1960s, the track hosted various sportscar events such as the Coppa Città di Enna and later in the 1970s the Coppa Florio. It also played host to a non-championship Formula One event known as the Mediterranean Grand Prix. The Formula 1 race was held 4 times between 1962 and 1965, it was won twice by Jo Siffert and once each by Lorenzo Bandini and John Surtees.

I'm not sure the first accident was my fault at spa. Let's wait for the opinion of the moderators.
I think I did well to find myself last on the grid...

I managed to avoid the wreckage at Zagaria on lap 1 but I lost a lot of time and any chance of a slipstream from the leading bunch. I'm not sure I was quick enough to actually catch a tow but it would have been nice to try. I had a race long battle with JonnyO although we were separated by about 500 metres for most of the race. The lap 1 crash spread us out and we were so well matched the gap didn't close. I had to maintain my concentration and put in some consistent error-free laps which I going to be my main focus this season. I've tended to throw away good results by loosing concentration and making silly mistakes, no more!

Grats to Leo on a dominant win. The championship table is interesting with 1 and 2 tied and 3 and 4 tied.

You were unlucky again Enrique. Don't give up, all your bad luck must be out of the way by now. I'm sure the next race will be awesome fun  whistling yes

Nice job by Leo marching off into the distance for a convincing win.  Top marks there, Leo.

Frank and Greg serving up a mighty battle for the remaining podium placings with the Frank just pipping Greg for P2.  Good stuff.

A somewhat lucky P4 for me as Alain certainly had me covered on speed but a couple of minor gaffes cost him the chance at besting my little Brabham.  Still, a P5 placing isn't too shabby.

I must confess to entering this round with great misgivings.  Pre-race trials indicated that it was going to be oh-so easy to cook the left-side tyres and with that prospect looming, a DNF would most definitely be in the mix.  I got away to a reasonable start off the grid but wasn't entirely sure if I was clear of Fulvio.  Managed to get into Curvone without drama.  Avoided the calamity at Zagaria on Lap01 to come away with P6 at the end of the lap.  Bad luck there for Ricky bordering on the criminal, imo.  Renato's late-race retirement with an engine failure gave me another place but along the way, I had a good dice with Alain.  He had slipped off the road early on to be chasing me and with my moderated pace to keep the tyres from turning into "buttered, round ice cubes", I may have seemed to short-brake him at Curvone on a couple of occasions.  Certainly not the case; just me being careful.  Late in the going, I caught sight of Alain very much sideways in Zagaria and figured he to be out of contention but no, my pitboard showed him only a couple of seconds back in the last laps so I put down my best laps of the race.  From the mid-point of the race on, I had much more confidence in keeping the tyres under me and could dive much deeper into Curvone than earlier on.

Fulvio maintained a good run to P6.

Mosport next on the sked.  My home track!  Smiley

Congrats Leo and Killer! Good job gentlemen.

It´s great to go to Sicily again. It´s been a while since I´ve been to Enna, my favorite ¨oval¨. With Targa, Enna, and Syracuse Sicily is one of my favorite places to drive. If you could overlay a map of Sicily that would cover Nurburgring and Spa that would be my favorite part of the world to drive.

That was fun. I can´t remember enjoying racing the Honda more than I did this race. I had the car working well.

That was an interesting race. I never left Frank much space to make mistakes. He appeared to make a lot of small mistakes but only one that gave me a lead for a short time. I had to be very careful not to do anything stupid. Doni sat 3-5 seconds behind me just waiting for me to screw up. I figured Alain would catch me and make me relent to the pressure quickly. But I kept cool and didn´t stress my tires too much, so Doni and Alain never managed to catch me.

I had an early chance to pass Frank but I decided it wasn´t the wise move. I would have quickly overheated my tires resulting in worse lap times. Once Frank gave me the position I slowly overheated my tires which let him pass me. After the midpoint of the race and no pressure to stay in front of Frank, I kept my tires in good shape. I noticed Frank appeared to be suffering from tire overheating sometime around the 2/3s point. I got a chance late in the race to pass Frank but I wasn´t sure I could complete the pass so backed off so I wouldn´t ruin the good thing I had going. I wish I could have got in front of Frank with less than 10 laps to go. It wouldn´t have been easy for him to get the position back.

It was easy to set the left rear tire on fire in qualifying. I think the Honda needs a special qualifying setup for this track. The left front was overheating throughout the first half of the race. That was much easier to handle than overheating the left rear tire. My tire pressure was low enough that I could still run consistently with the LF at 300+ degrees F (149C).

I worried a bit that I wasn´t shifting gears cleanly some times, but I did a good job keeping the rpms at or below 11,000 rpms most of the race. When I ran a good line through turn 1, which was most of the time, the Honda was flying when I got to turn 2! The approach to turn 2 was exciting!

Thanks for the fun guys. It´s great that I´m driving well. It´s been years since GPL was this fun.

...First , I didn't know that I was your worse enemy my dear Enrique Smiley ... maybe it's why you got the idea to overtake me at the inside at Zagaria on the first lap ?! ... well , when I saw Farina arriving on my side ,I slow down and put the 5 gear ( normally I do it 150m later ) to let him go ( anyway I can't fight against the Eagle ! ), but  he was allready on the wrong side and had to slow down , but He slow down too much ,break too early, as he was under 200km/h ( IN qualifs he pass Zagaria at 230- 235 km/h ) .... so , sorry for what happend, I just wanted to let him pass ( despite his irresponsible maneuver ! ) and take its wake , I try to avoid him turning the steering wheel full left hand but too late !...damned !... sorry but who have the idea to overtake at the inside at Zagaria on the first lap ?!....Maybe Enrique you are the only one to try that !?....It could have been pretty if you had mastered the situation well as I clearly slowed down 200m before my normal breaking point, but you was far of the racing line , you break too early and you are far to stick the apex with a poor speed ....
...after , I restart last and have a poor race with the BRM who is hopelessly slow...or maybe it's me ?
C U next one

Tris, Enrique

The incident has been reported and will be examined by the moderators. So please don't debate it on the forum any longer, let the moderators decide. The moderators will be able to judge what, if anything, went wrong.

The moderators know it is possible to overtake safely on this corner (for example see lap 20, replay time 0h24m14s) but it is a difficult corner.

Oh boy, Enrique, [edited, respect for Phil and UKGPL Admins].

I was worried about your race pace on the eagle, as with Alain and Jungle. Didn't  think I could hold the Eagles and Lotus. What a shame, Jungle! You kept me straight so long you were behind pushing me. That darn Cossi is temperamental.  Tongue

.....OK Phil, but it was not exactly the same with you, I overtake much before and I have the time to re-take the good racing line to be well placed ...and we can take the curve up to 220km/h......Wink

well....of course I accept the moderators jugement , but I still want to make a very important point and you can check it with the replay : I was NOT determined to contest the overtaking as I break earlier than normal and put the 5 gear earlier too when I know that Farina was overtaking me ! ( it was clear on Prib ! )...I therefore DID NOT CONTEST the overtake ! ... I was just surprise how Farina was slow as I wanted to take his slipstream ( under 200km/h !? for sure he made the corner quite comfortably (!? )...if you compare with a good lap it's 30km/h faster ! ) ...so I HAVE yielded !!
....I think that Farina don't like to be overtake , spécialy at the start  when he have a better place and as you pointed out, I take a better' start in the BRM that him in the Eagle and for sure, he does not have him more ...has he says himself , I am his worse enemy !!,
that's why he wanted absolutely overtake me as soon as possible and I still think he should wait for the next section to do a clean overtaking....such a maneuver was really not necessary for the 2nd turn of the 1rst lap
Question :
At Spa , Farina is on the good racing  line but hit Phil on the rear who have take a better start and was ahead ....he  was right.
At Enna, I am on the good racing line but hit Farina who is too slow after a hard breaking to do a block pass !?....I am wrong.
is it enough to be inside to have priority ?
