Season 42 - 1965    Round 9   Castle Combe

Round 9 we will be at Castle Combe, a motor racing circuit in Wiltshire, England, approximately 20 miles (32 km) from Bristol. The circuit is based on the perimeter track of a former World War II airfield, and was opened for racing in 1950. The Castle Combe airfield opened in May 1941 on land of the Castle Combe estate, owned by the Gorst family, operating as RAF Castle Combe for seven years before being decommissioned in 1948. It was a fighter-base for Polish airmen. Castle Combe Circuit opened in 1950, and the first meeting was staged on 8 July by the Bristol Motorcycle & Light Car Club. Over the next few years, the circuit attracted star names such as Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Roy Salvadori and John Surtees. The circuit's first motorcycle event was in 1952, organised by the Wessex Centre.

Castle Combe has staged many different motorsport disciplines over the years. In 1997, Nigel Greensall established a new lap record. His Tyrrell 022 lapped the circuit at 130.93 mph (210.71 km/h). However, this was the last year that the circuit would remain unaltered. A tragic accident involving the death of a spectator forced the owners into installing two new chicanes in order to slow the cars down. The new layout was slightly longer at 1.85 miles (2.98 km), and was completed over the winter of 1998-1999. Formula Three returned to Castle Combe in 2001. However, it would not stay long. In 2005, the circuit was issued with a noise nuisance order, which meant that the circuit had to reduce its noise level. The British Formula Three Championship and the British GT Championship were both louder than permitted, and so were prevented from returning.

Unlike me, Will is using Windoze11. He can't see a racelist in igor. Any ideas? we've tried igor.gaiztor.com and igor.gplrank.de

It's not a biggy as he can join via IP but it would be good to get sorted.

Thanks

It's not a general Win11 thing (my monitor mini-machine sees the racelist ok).
Just as a sanity check,  are there other iGOR.ini  files on Will's machine?  Smiley

Qualifying was super close so I knew this race would be decided on who made the least mistakes. It looks like that was Cookie, great driving! A well deserved win.  thumbup2

I made a few minor mistakes but nothing too drastic, I was pleased with 4th. I had some good battles with Bob, Andreas, Alain and Evil. I'd swapped places with Evil a couple of times but at about mid race he made a mistake and dropped back. But he fought back and the last 10 laps were shaping up to be a titanic battle. He was all over me for 5 laps but then he started to run low on fuel and his challenge was over. Pity I'm not sure I had a strong enough defence to withstand one of his banzai overtakes!

After my spun at half distance with Bob behind I restarted with Andreas on my tail for the rest of the race. He was faster but had the patience to wait till 3 laps to go when I exit slower from last turn and he made a great pass at Quarry. He had tried some laps before when we made the esses side by side, exciting. But one lap later he went too deep at Tower while Bob catched us, and I managed to exit the turn ahead for last lap, I thought..., but when I crossed s/f line there was the flagman that was waving for Axel just behind us. Bob was lapped just before last lap and I stopped when I saw 0 lap on Pribluda. Didn't even notice on the battle with Andreas that there was Clive crawling ahead without gas  Roll Eyes
I think Andreas had understood that we had still one lap but was caught between Clive and me slowing at Quarry and got the turn post and crashed badly. I coasted right after Quarry and soon after saw Andreas roaring to catch 6th. We both could have passed easily Clive without my stupidity and maybe we could have had a last turn battle  Sad

I really struggled here. I was not able to to determine where most of the corners were/they appeared unsighted.

Not so bad when following other cars - it was certainly more enjoyable in the closing stages following Will / with tow for a few laps,   but he was 1 lap ahead!

My plan was to save the tokens for an end of series Lotus experience,  but was just wasted here (with me).

Anyway, congrats podium/finishers! Still good to see quite a turnout.

Cheers,
Dave.

Grats to Axel and the podium places and of course to all finishers.

Castle Coombe is a deceptive circuit IMHO. Very fast with few ( none)  overtaking opportunities unless the car ahead makes a mistake, and so it proved in this race.
The BT7 was always going to be a hard drive to gain any points......but likely to be fun keeping it at 10/10's. Unfortunately I was at 11/10's 0n a couple of occasions and that did not work so well  Undecided.

Towards mid race I was about 300mtrs behind Phil and had got into a fast rhythm so that I could see the gap reducing...provided that I made no mistakes.
By hitting the peak torque in each gear I slowly reeled him in, and with 10 laps to go I had the slipstream tow rope attached. Now it was going to be a case of waiting for an error. but I did not want to get ahead too soon as Phil had the more powerful car. In an ideal world I would take the lead at Tower on the final lap...........in an ideal world  Roll Eyes
However, after following in the slipstream for a couple of laps my ideal world scenario was destroyed when I checked the fuel.  scared scared In qualifying I was getting around 5 laps per gallon, so I figured that 10 galls would yield around 50 laps. Somewhere during the race I had lost a load of fuel !! Probably chasing after Phil.

Now I had 8 laps to go and only 1.1 galls of fuel ??!!! If I stayed at Phil's pace I would clearly not reach the flag. So, it was extreme economy driving for the last laps never lower than 4th gear and barely using the accelerator.
As I started the last lap I had 0.1 galls of fuel, but  Fulvio, along with Andreas, were closing very quickly, so I was sure to lose at least 2 more places even if I reached the flag...I almost quit right then as I did not think it was possible.
I could see Fulvio in my mirrors as I went up Avon Rise and expected him to pass me on the exit of Quarry. But all I saw in my mirrors was a car flying straight on Huh?? A check on Prib and both Fulvio and Andreas were now way behind....but I still had get to the finish to hang on to my points.

As I exited Tower and climbed up the straight the fuel gauge clicked to 0.0 and I though that was my race ended, so I waited for the engine to die.
I lifted and coasted into Camp and was amazed that the engine was still running to carry me over the finish line...........it went quiet about 20 mtrs past the flag !!!

I was lucky  Grin very lucky!!

That was me, could not figure out what you have done, Fran. Maybe nexttime just stay on one side and leave the other side free for the Overlapper.  Smiley But don't you be worry too much, cause all in all it was a good race for me. Started 8. and finished 6. So I can't ask for more.  laugh

That was a big battle with you Fulvio!  Enjoyed it very much.  punk

I'm quicker at building a track than I am driving around this one.  wheelchair

I just couldn't get my BRM hooked up at this track today. I had plenty of power but simply could not find a consistent line or get myself into any sort of rhythm. I made my usual lousy start and lost about 5 places on the first lap by being overly cautious.

I had a good few laps chasing Will who was making his Cooper very wide. Honestly, hasn't this kid been taught any manners? I blame the parents  Wink

I threw myself into the tyres at T1 a few times after mis-judging the tricky braking over the left-hand kink. Dave bore the full brunt of my BRM's nose-cone as I T-Boned his spinning Lotus at the final bend a few laps later. I took a detour into the hay field but managed to keep going. A few laps later I blew up my engine (2nd time that's happened this season and I thought that the 65s were unbreakable) so had to shift-R.

Not a great day but still a few laps of GPL fun along the way.

Looking unlikely that I can make the last round so I'll ask one of the other mods to host Thruxton. If I don't see you there, thanks for supporting this series.

Great race with Tristen! While Tristen and I were battling for position, Axel drove away to a comfortable lead. After Tristen spun, and I had open track and no one glued to my gear box, I was able to close the gap to Axel. Once he noticed the gap was decreasing he picked up the pace to take the win. Congrats Axel on the win and Tristen for the podium.
