Moderator's Report

Drivers are reminded that if it's raining, you should be running with lights on.

I've talked in the past about the dangers of overdriving. In this particular race, I watched Maurice Claessen run wide about 20% of the time, and go off far too often. I don't expect anyone to never go off or make a mistake, but it's essential that you attempt to drive within your personal limits; paddling a car out of the gravel traps every five laps is frustrating for you and dangerous for other drivers.

Server replay time: 200s

Just when I was starting to think we'd got the hang of rolling starts, we have a big smash at the start line.

Maurice Claessen who is leading the pace lap starts to accelerate well before the line, but the real culprit is Tazman who comes out of the last corner and immediately passes a whole bunch of cars. There is then a chain reaction with a whole load of cars having to stand on the anchors, which causes Oilseal to ram into the back of aajay_uk, [Zip]Tyf joining the fun. Gerald nearly joins in too.

  • mclaessen (Maurice Claessen)warning — premature acceleration on the pace lap
  • Tazmanpenalty — going on the pace lap before the driver in front went — 0 places lost

Server replay time: 284s

Tazman spins off out of turn 12. He rejoins, drifting lazily across the track as most of the rest of the field come past - they do well to miss him, Gerald taking to the grass to avoid contact.

As this is the first racing lap, it would normally be an additional place lost over the normal three, but since nobody actually hits him, and since he does appear to be at least trying to get out of the way, I've reduced it to just two places.

In this situation, it's best to remain stationary and/or off track and use the look behind/left/right functions to see if it's safe to rejoin. This gives everyone else the greatest chance to avoid you. Once you do rejoin, in most circumstances you should not attempt to cross to the other side of the track, even to get off the racing line, because again it makes you very unpredictable and hard to avoid.

  • Tazmanpenalty — dangerous rejoin — 2 places lost

Server replay time: 325s

Jamera has a huge moment in turn 12 and Dave Gymer gets more than halfway alongside on the inside into New Holland. Jamera turns in on Dave and there's contact but they both continue without damage or spinning, so as a result the normal penalty (three places on the first racing lap) is reduced.

  • Jamerapenalty — contact with Dave Gymer — 1 place lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Server replay time: 352s

Popabawa gets half a car length ahead of Jamera on the inside of Elf, but Jamera turns in on him and there is contact. Although neither car spun or was badly damaged, and despite Jamera not losing the place, the full penalty must apply because this is the second such incident in the space of less than 30 seconds.

  • Jamerapenalty — contact with Popabawa — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Server replay time: 400s

Jamera gets caught out under braking for Wurth and runs into the back of Popabawa, who brakes very early compared to his normal braking point, and is very slow mid-corner. Jamera comes off far worse, losing a place to Shark in the Z3M, so I'm only going to issue a caution.

  • Jameracaution — rear ending Popabawa

Server replay time: 1400s

Zacari has just left the pits on fresh but cold wet tyres; he applies to much power on the exit of Repsol and spins into the back of Michael Cooper, spinning both out.

  • Zacariadvice — be careful on cold tyres, especially when near other cars

Server replay time: 1403s

Maurice Claessen's Saleen has run wide at La Caixa, allowing Popabawa's GT3-RS to lap him. Pops runs wide in Turn 12 and Maurice sees it as an opportunity to unlap himself, but doesn't leave Popabawa enough room to recover without going off and makes contact.

Maurice only had himself to blame for going off at La Caixa and forcing another driver off the road after they had made a lesser mistake was needlessly agressive. However, because there was some ambiguity in the situation, I'm reducing the penalty to a single place.

Server replay time: 1475s

Tazman has gone off at Wurth, and rejoins up the hill only to spin again as he tries to apply some power. He rejoins again and drives very slowly across the track towards the apex of Campsa before retiring just as Dave Gymer arrives.

Dave starts going to the right to avoid him, but Tazman continues to move, and being hard on the brakes Dave can't jink to the left and would've made contact - it was pure luck that Tazman hit escape just as Dave was about to crash into him.

Much like Taz's earlier off at 284s, having decided to rejoin, the one thing you must not do is cross the track with cars approaching. They stand very little chance of avoiding you.

  • Tazmanwarning — bad (aborted) rejoin

Server replay time: 1510s

Maurice has run off in La Caixa; as Popabawa approaches Maurice applies too much throttle and spins right across Popa's path.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 3639s

aajay_uk has a slow, lazy spin in Banc Sabadell and Popabawa can't quite squeeze past on the inside, spinning out as he clip's aajay's nose.

  • Racing incident

Help a noobie out here, would that have been possible? My soft wets still felt pretty good when I
pitted but is this only possible in wet conditions? I know I should spend more time rehearsing but
fun race tomorrow looks a better bet than practicing on my lonesome.
The max fuel load on the Viper is ony 55mins at Barcelona, but in the wet, I went right through with quite a bit of fuel to spare at the end, so I wouldn;t be surprised to find that most GT's could do a non-stop 1hr wet race.  Soft wets won't last it though Smiley

I don't imagine soft wets will last very long in the dry.   Shocked

Soft dry tires can last for an hour depending on car and care. I did 45 at magny in dry (fun race) with no problems, I think I could have easily gone for 1hr. Also at Barcelona I was doing 1hr practice runs but that was touch and go.

You _really_ need a planted setup tho, and probably more rear wing that you would usually run.

What do you lot mean by hard and soft wets? there are intermediates, normal wets and monsoons, and they differ mostly in tread, not compound.

That's cause you are running the German version with english translation Gizmo. They are not named the same in the full english version.

Couple of other observations from last night;

There was some low-level chat during Q's and the race, it wasn't a big deal but I find it really offputting and it is against the rules. Sorry to be picky about that.

There was some patient and super-courteous driving from the GT drivers (from an overtaking my NGT perspective) Grin Brilliant stuff.

I think that worked both ways. Knowing you would let us through when you could made it easy to be patient.
It also made it very predictable.

Only one minor gripe. One or two, in their haste to let us through, tended to jump to one side and proved far less predictable (in fact it frightened the crap out of me). Simply sticking to normal line makes it far easier to overtake in safe manner.

Yeah, you're not wrong. I think in future I'm just going to turn chat off as I've yet to see a useful message, even PI/PO (and especially not "Bob McBob: WARNING! Bob McBob exiting pits now so stay out of the way or else!!!" or equivalent instead of "pit out" Roll Eyes ) and I suggest everyone do the same. Then spectators (ie. those who've crashed out) can chat amongst themselves and the rest of us can concentrate on racing. Wink

Lmao @ the bob stuff, I noticed that too. Chatting annoys me too, I never use any pit messages. Maybe on some tracks the' pit in' is usefull, because that driver will have to slam on the brakes to enter, else I don't see the point.
The chatting of spectators I'm not sure about, because I sometimes even hear 'clicking sounds' of people chatting in the lobby, which is really distracting.

As for the overtaking yesterday, I just waited for the right spot and then had to drop of the gas a little as well, lol, to let GT's pass by, because the Bi-T has some awesome grip out of the corners. Went smooth almost all the time really. Only a couple of 550's managed to really out-accelerate me in the wet, hehe.

just a quick hello from a newbie  -  this was my first online race ever and I really enjoyed it although couldn't keep my focus for the full hour in the wet.
Need some more practice and setup work.
Qualified in 6th to my amazement but it all went downhill from there, maybe due to tyre choice of 'hard wets'?

anyway hope I didn't get in the way too much..
