There's a media day at Brands on Thursday, lots of stuff there. I've a horrible feeling it's half term though so it may be crawling with horrid little children. I might pop along - the weather looks cold but pleasant - to try out my new lens - a Sigma 50-150 f/2.8.

That's a really nice lens Dave, I'd be interested to know what you think of it, I'm in the market for something similar

Not really had a chance to try it in anger yet, hence my keenitudinousness to get down to Brands on Thursday to try it in its intended field of study. So far I've noticed a bit of vignetting when shooting fully open at maximum zoom, but nothing which Photo$hop can't fix and in line with what I've read in reviews. My main worry is whether I can cope with the very shallow depth of field when shooting in less than bright light. For example, I just took this at f/2.8. Bear in mind that that's a relatively small portion of the image cropped out, and was shot from about 3 metres away. No camera, JR, just a tiny demon in a box drawing really quickly.

I love the DOF possibilities with these fast lenses when they are wide open. I'm thinking the f/2.8 will be great for portraits at 50mm. I have a prime 50mm f/1.4 which is awesome for portraits, the DOF gets to around 1cm when fully open. This is my boy hamming it up for the camera @ f/1.4; You might also be interested in this set, taken with my 180mm f/2.8 prime at the Bears-Cowboys game at Soldier Field last season. Mostly under floodlight so less than ideal lighting; http://www.flickr.com/photos/popabawa/sets/72157602156137719/

The "Exodus" picture is interesting - strange looking bokeh on that one. John Madden's a big chap isn't he?

John Madden's a big chap isn't he? I met Darryl "Moose" Johnson (Ex Cowboys FB) a couple of years ago, he was staying the same hotel as me in Pittsburgh when I went to see the Steelers-Bears game. He was enormous, you just can't appreciate how big pro footballers are until you standing next to them. He was a really nice guy too, he had a long chat with my mate who is a Cowboys fan, he really went out of his way to be friendly.

I officially apologise to my team-mates for, once again, boring them rigid re. photography I blame Dave, he mentioned it first and I'm completely unable to resist being completely boring and nerdy once it's mentioned

I can't imagine a less girly topic than the size of our lenses! you are probably right dave. If you need such high levels of zoom to get a picture of something, chances are the girls would not be interested.
