Start Line

Tim Whiting gets a better start than Simon Gymer off the line (Both on the left hand side of the grid) and decides to drive up the left side to overtake where there is literally 1 car width of space. As Tim is alongside, Simon drifts fractionally to the left, they tangle and Simon is thrown off the road ending up with a wheel off forcing a Shift R. Tim is left pointing the wrong way and does a spin turn in front of the reset-ing Simon. Martin Portman is ahead, broadside across the track. Tim then goes for the small gap in front of Martin but Martin moves just as he gets there and they collide.

This is a classic case of lack od care at the start. We see far too many start line incidents, and have repeatedly asked drivers to be careful at the start when the cars are so tightly bunched. Trying to drive past someone that close is a recipe for disaster so the fact that Simon drifted left slightly does not make him at fault. This lack of care was compounded by trying to drive through another small gap to escape the confusion, when it would have been much simpler and safer to drive round the back of Martin's car.

Lap 13

Graham Houghton is approaching T1, and ahead Luci and Clive Griffin are side by side entering the braking zone. Both brake very early (presumably taking care not to go too deep) which catches Graham out. He brakes, but not hard enough, and by the time he realises this its too late and he locks up, sliding into Clive who's taken a wide line to give Luci room. Given the fact that both cars braked very early, this is the first race of the season, and I that think this was more a mistake than carelessness, I've decided to let Graham off a penalty for this and issue a warning instead.

4 corners later, Graham is now right behind Luci into Clubhouse. Luci takes a widish line in and a late apex, but Graham takes a much tighter line as if Luci were going wide. Graham hits Luci mid apex. This was far too ambitious and didn't account for what Luci might do. I think Graham assumed that Luci's wide line meant she had gone too deep and would not make the apex. Had Graham been following for a lap or 2 to work out the lines and braking points used by Luci it might have made this more acceptable as a misjudgement, but this was almost the first corner when Graham was close enough to think about an overtake.

One other thing worth mentioning. Joe Murphy missed the pit lane entry and stopped on the verge after the pit exit. This is not an acceptable alternative - if you miss the pits then you must go round and pit again. Only use the pits. Since this was a test race, rules are new and Joe retired anyway there seems little point in issuing a penalty here.

Moderator's Report

Start

Ralph Maiph(P7) is a litte slow off the line, which causes the cars behind him to bunch up, except that Vinny Kwiker doesnt read the situation in time and just clips Joe Murpy's right rear and Vinny goes spinning off, collecting Dick Barker. (Joe Murphy was unaffected)

This was very much an avoidable accident and no real attempt was taking to avoid the situation.

Lap4

Van de Skids in P1, looses it at Hondenvlak and does a slow 360 on the track. Jared Chainey who's a little behind is largely unable to avoid him and clips him. (Skids is very lucky as he again is spun 360 and ends up pointing the right way).

Chainey could have done more to avoid Skids, though. Skids has turned over 120 degrees before Chainey stops accelerating, so a CAUTION to Chainey.

Lap6

Van de Skids spins again, this time at Tunnel Oost and goes for a picnic in the sanddunes... he then decides to rejoin, with an evil knievel style jump over the banks near Panoramabocht, flips, lands on the track and Ralph Maiph got no chance to avoid him. This looked more like frustration than anything else!

Lap11.

Skids has been following Tom Barton for a couple of laps and is clearly faster, but is unable to match the pace of the Eagle on the straights.

At Panoramabocht Skids, while being clearly behind, dives to the inside, clipping Tom Barton and sends him flying. Again, this looked like frustration.

Lap14, Hondenvlak

Clive Griffin spin out at Hondenvlak and ends up on the track facing the wrong way. He then tries a 3rd gear(!!) spin turn, which fails and slowly goes across the track as Martin Portman approaches. Portman does very well to avoid Griffin, but the situation should never have arised.

Lap 21 & 23.

Tom Barton shift-rs on those two laps and does not take a stop and go on either occasion. A 6 place penalty and a disqualification is hereby issued.

  • Tom Barton — Failing to stop and go (twice) — 0 places lost

Moderator's Report

Lap 1

Off the line T Whiting goes left of a slow starting R.Maiph and drives into the side of J.Murphy who has kept to his side of the track. Moving in this manner at the start is very dangerous and will most likely cause incidents as it does in this case with a number of cars being caught in the resultant accident.

At the bottom of Eau Rouge T Barton and L Wong make side by side contact which causes quite a bad pileup, despite this I think the initial incident was a racing incident.

P.Adams and A Mcdanger have separate accidents at Masta and hit each other
in the process, racing incident.

Lap 2: J. Murphy spins at Masta and L.Wong can't avoid, racing incident

Lap 5: M.Portman loses the rear of his car, the front suddenly grips and throws him across the road into the unfortunate D.Dell who is taking avoiding action, racing incident

Derrick Del did not perform any stop and goes for his 3 shift-r's, so unfrtunately he is retired at the point of offence (2 laps after the 2nd missed stop/go).

Moderator's Report

This has to be one of the most involved races I've ever had to moderate. Lots of incidents, many of them simple mistakes, but also several which were at least avoidable by taking a bit more care. It was also apparent that a lot of drivers were quite happy to nurf the armco almost every lap. This is a penalty offense according to the guidelines because its an abuse of the intermediate damage level we run to give drivers a 2nd chance, but since so many drivers did it there seems little point enforcing the rule.

Philip Barnes managed to complete the whole race in the wrong division, a feat worthy of some kind of award I'm sure you'll agree. This means that everyone moves up a place in the standings.

On the other hand, Tom Barton was lost by the server and actually finished 5th on the road.

Lap 1

Vinny is following Luci at a fair distance down into Mirabeau, but makes a wild late braking attempt down the inside. Luci sees him coming and wisely stays wide, but Vinny has left if far too late and slides straight through, thumping the armco on the outside and carrying on ahead of Luci. He then accelerates hard, gets crossed up under power and slews across the track in front of Luci. The 2 of them then race down to the hairpin where disaster awaits (see below). IMO this was not appropriate lap 1 driving by Vinny. To even attempt a pass from so far back on lap 1 at monaco is inviting trouble, and it's clear that he wasn't taking the care we expect from all drivers at this point of the race. To rub salt in the wounds, rather than let Luci back through he shows more lack of care by the wild power slide to stay ahead of her. Contact was only avoided by Luci's awareness of the situation and her willingness to sacrifice her own chances in the interests of clean racing.

  • Vinny Kwiker — over ambitious overtake/lack of care on lap 1 — 1 place lost

Up ahead, after a good clean start, the field bunches up at the Station hairpin (as it so often does on lap 1). Graham Houghton gets a bit too close to the car in front and taps it, causing him to suddenly lose speed. Ben Summers is behind and is caught out by the speed change, and nudges into Graham. Ben is then hit from behind simultaneously by Luci and Vinny who are obviously only focusing on their private battle. Carnage results. I feel both Vinny and Luci are to blame here. The initial contacts would not had have a big impact on their own, and the tightness of the hairpin makes them hard to avoid. Fot this reason I've decided only to issue penalties to Vinny and Luci. The normal penalty for a lap 1 rear end shunt is 3 places, but Luci's penalty is reduced because I feel she lost out unfairly at the previous corner and had already shown careful driving. I've also reduced both of them as this sort of situation would have been hard to avoid in any event - it was the scale of the impact that made it really bad.

There is much bumping and pushing to recover, but I've decided not to issue penalties as the whole situation is pretty hopeless!

  • Luci Wong — Rear end shunt/lack of care on lap 1 — 1 place lost
  • Vinny Kwiker — Rear end shunt/lack of care on lap 1 — 2 places lost

Lap 2: Martin Portman rear-ends Paul Adams at Tabac. No excuse really so early in the race.

Paul Adams is entitled to skip the stop/go requirement and does so, but fails to inform the moderator after the race that he has done so.

J Vizoso is following Ralph Maiph into Tabac. Ralph has to back off a bit due to the car in front getting sideways, but JV doesn't notice and ploughs into the back of him. I think warp played a small part in making this worse, but JV really should have taken more care at this early stage.

Graham Houghton is caught up in the mess of the above incident, ends up facing backwards, and in his eagerness to get going does a big spin turn in front of 2 approaching cars. The one behind problem would have hidden them from view, but Graham didn't take any time to assess the situation or let things settle down. Only a large slice of luck prevented a big accident.

Lap 5: Jared Chainey Rear ends Tim Whiting at the gassworks hairpin. Since he had followed Tim for several laps it appears he just missed his braking point, so the penalty is reduced.

Lap 6

After one of the many crashes at the chicane, Martin Portman is approaching Tabac. Vinny is some way behind but on the inside and carrying more speed. He makes a very late dive down the inside when Martin is already committed to the line. Martin is pushed off to the outside, and despite using Martin's car to slow his own down Vinny still hits the armco on the outside - very similar to the incident on lap 1 at Mirabeau only this time with contact. My first reaction on seeing this was to issue a penalty to Vinny since it looks quite blatant. After looking again however I think Vinny was unsighted, as a car skating down the track on its roof obscured his view of Martin's car. However, I still think Vinny was not taking enough care given the carnage around him (he had not passed the green flag after the incident) so I feel a warning is appropriate.

Paul Adams approaches the chicane where Simon Gymer has crashed. Yellow flags are clearly visible but Paul keeps his foot down until its far too late to avoid an incident.

  • Paul Adams — Lack of care approching an incident

Lap 9: Tom Barton shift Rs after a collision at the chicane. He pits at the end of the lap for his scheduled stop but neglects to take the stop/go penalty.

  • Tom Barton — Failure to Stop and Go — 6 places lost

Lap 11

Ben Summers rear-ends Del Brocklehurst at the gassworks Hairpin causing him to half spin. Given that Ben simply gets locked up and cant stop and that no places were gained/lost (Ben waited for Dell to get going) I've reduced the penalty to a warning.

Lap 14

Tom Barton taps Del Brocklehurst at the Station Hairpin, gaining a place as a result. Since Del went a little wide and then cut back and the contact was pretty light I've reduced the penalty.

  • Tom Barton — Rear-ending D. Brocklehurst — 1 place lost

J Vizoso shift Rs at the end of his pitstop, but doesn't take and extra stop/go. Pitstops do not allow you to shift R!

  • John Vizoso — Failure to Stop and Go — 6 places lost

Lap 17

After a spin, J Vizoso is pointing the wrong way at Tabac and spin turns to recover. The one behind problem means that he cant see the second car approaching and contact is inevitable. When rejoining the track you should always let cars go past to see if the track is clear.

Eddie Urbanski also skipped more than 1 stop/go.

There was some confusion at the end of the race as several drivers were shown the chequered flag a lap early, but luckily all those affected stopped and so the result was not affected.

Paul Adams also had a very bad connection throughout the race, with frequent large clock smashes making his car appear and disappear several times a lap! On one occasion this caused a big accident. I'd like to remind everybody that a good connection is a pre-requisite for taking part in the races. If you are getting bad clock smashes or the other cars are disappearing then do the decent thing and retire.

Moderator's Report

Grid

Mo Ahmed (left side) makes a laboured getaway from the grid meaning the driver behind, Ford24V, is tied up behind him trying to restrain his throttle. Meanwhile, a place behind (on the right side of the grid), Simon Gymer has made a steady start but Tim Whiting (behind Simon) has made a stormer and is moving around Simon's right flank (almost taking out the starter). Ford24V oscillates first left then right, crossing the road markings for the middle of the track toward Simon. Tim is rather optimistically hoping there will be room ahead to filter in before the funnel of hay bails. Luckily for Tim the left-right slewing of Ford24V's Eagle and subsequent collision with Simon's Eagle means there is an opening before the funnel into T1. Ford24V's incident with Simon and resulting spins meant that many cars behind (Martin Portman, Ben Summers, Juan Vizoso) are all caught up in a T1 log-jam.

Reminder: This is online GPL racing where lag, the collision engine and a lack of peripheral vision means more care is needed at the start when there a lot of cars all around!

Ford24V and Simon Gymer: Racing Incident

Caution at the start please, races are won at the chequered flag not the green one. Luckily you got away with it this time. The pit straight is part of the track but at circuits such with such as this with a short space before the funnel it's risking a major T1 collisions to try moves such when you can't be sure you'll be able to filter back in.

Lap 1 Nouveau Monde

The leaders all filter through the chicane single file but for some unfathomable reason Tim Whiting really can't wait and tries to make up some places. He dives up the inside on cold tyres and doesn't have enough brake, lock or angle to get through and T-bones Mo Ahmed who was two places ahead!

Everyone seemed to be in control here except Tim. This is lap 1 at probably the most infamous and tight corner of Rouen, right at the start of the race.

Lap 4 Nouvou Monde

Collis has been chasing Clive for a few laps and putting him under pressure. Clive takes the hairpin wide of the apex and Collis gets sucked in on the inside. As they come out Collis' left front makes slight contact with Clive's rear right on the inner line of the track. It was Clive's corner to take the line he wanted...

Collis Coll: Warning. Side Contact, mitigated to Warning from 2 Place Penalty. Clive had been wide of the apex which sucked in Collis who had been following closely taking sighters for several laps and isn't really looking to overtake.

Lap 17, Scierie

Mo Ahmed trails Kev Hammett in his Cooper up the back straight at a good distance behind. Kev stays in the throttle as long as poss (having to fend off an advancing Eagle). Kev is slightly ragged on the turn but is easily going to make it on a slightly unconventional line. However, he is is taken out by Mo who hadn't braked hard enough with Kev occupying the tarmac in front of him.

  • Mo Ahmed — Rear ending K. Hammett — 2 places lost

Moderator's Report

Lap 1, Becketts: Collis Coll makes a move on the inside of Van De Skids taking him out.

This is lap 1, turn 3 - no time for the race to settle down and everyone's on cold tyres. Collis does try to back out but it's way to late. Normally this would be a 3 place penalty (being on lap 1) but lenience shown for the attempt to back out.

  • Colliss Coll — Overly ambitious overtake — 2 places lost

Lap 12, Pitlane: Juan's Brabham Pitstop pitstop is 12 seconds rather than the 15 required.

Juan Vizoso: Penalty. 3 seconds added to race time, equating to a 1 place penalty (according to the approximate* finishing gap to the next driver).

If you are not using the pitstop software please make sure pitstop lengths are generous enough to cover the full pitstop time.

* The driver behind probably wasn't pushing as he may have settled for the position and obviously didn't *know* he was three seconds closer to Juan than his pitboard would have told him.

  • John Vizoso — Short timed stop — 3.000 seconds added

Lap 23, Club: Derrick Del rear ender on Collis Coll. Derrick has been hunting down Collis for many laps and finally gets within "striking distance" with a lap and a half to go with Collis catching up on a back marker.

In many ways on first sight it's a classic rear ender, but after comparison with their previous laps and watching the incident many times it's clear that Collis brakes very slightly earlier than normal and Derrick brakes very slightly later than normal. Hence the 2 place penalty reduced to one.

Collis shift-Rs and continues, finishing in the pits doing a stop-go (which was unnecessary as he had a body of evidence that the Shift-R was not his own fault!)

It was a shame to see the race end this way as we were set up for a wing-ding of final lap and grandstand finish (not withstanding the earlier penalty for Collis).

Moderator's Report

Lap 1, Approach to Sudcurve - C. Coll vs R. Maiph vs T. Whiting

Colliss is following two Ferraris, TW and RM. TW braked particularly early which caught out RM and CC who both ploughed into him.

TW did brake particularly early but that's not exactly rare in the first few corners. TW was well over to the left and there was plenty of room to get past if they'd left a little more room.

Because of TW's very early braking and the fact there seems to be an element of warp in Colliss' case I'm mitigating the penalties to warnings.

Lap 1, Approach to Sudcurve - FordV24 vs A. McDanger

FV24 accelerates down the straight and is all over the back of AMcD despite the fact that there's no way he can get in front before the next corner. AMcD brakes for the left hander leaving nowhere for FV24 to go.

I can see no mitigating circumstances in this case. No warp. No excessively early braking. You're supposed to be taking it carefully at the start of the race. This incident was simply the result of inappropriate throttle application and insufficient brake. Hence the penalty.

Lap 1, Antoniusbruche (I think) T. Whiting vs S. Gymer.

TW simply brakes too late for the left hander over the bridge and clouts SG mid corner. It's a driving error rather than an error of judgement so it's a warning rather than a penalty.

TW waits behind SG after the incident and is nearly hit by a Cooper ho comes round the corner blind to find two cars there. Also, by sitting there he blinds SG to any following traffic due to the one behind rule. Don't sit and wait for other people round blind corners, especially at the Ring. You'll only cause more carnage.

Lap 1 - Moss: M. Ahmed vs D. Del

DD Keeps to the conventional line between the two parts of Moss. MA stays to the inside in DD's blind spot. At the second right hander DD turns in and MA is slightly overlapping his rear wheel and they touch.

This is not an overtaking point. Positioning himself where MA did was futile and only ever going to result in an accident.

There was a very slight element of warp (which MA should have allowed for) so I've mitigated it to 1 place.

  • Mo Ahmed — Contact with D. Del — 1 place lost

Lap 6 - Moss: E. Urbanski vs S. Gymer

See previous incident description and change the names.

Lap 6 - Andretti Straight: M. Portman vs L. Wong vs M. Ahmed

LW is travelling slowly on te right of the track. MA goes past to the left. MP is following but on the right and drives straight into the back of LW's ferrari.

Mitigating factors are LW's slow speed (but MP has plenty of time to see this) and a sight warp just before he hits her.

For these reasons it's a warning rather than a penalty.

Moderator's Report

Lap 1 Start

Juan Vizoso gets away slowly and Simon Gymer ducks out from behind to pass on the right. Both drivers then seem to drift into each other, causing a pileup which collects K Saxena (who would have been entitled to a no-fault shift R as a spinning car hit him). I feel both drivers could have taken mre care here to keep the cars straight, but were intent on maximum cceleration.

Lap 1 Curve Grande

Ali McDanger gets it sideways and ends up running along the armco. When he sees a car behind approaching, he gets back hard on the gas while still riding the armco. This is clearly not allowed in the rules. Had Ali not got back hard on the gas then he would have got away with this, but it was pretty blatant IMO.

Lap 1 Lesmo 1: Ralph Maiph v Tim Whiting

Ralph is following Tim down to Lesmo 1. Tim stays left on the racing line, but Ralph stays right in an attempt to look down the inside, but isn't gaining on Tim. Ralph never gets anywhere near level before Tim turns in, and T bones him mid corner. This one is pretty clear cut - you must be level before the other car turns in in order to take his line in this way. The fact that this was only turn 2 of the first lap makes it worse. Several other cars ran into this incident afterwards.

Simon Gymer shift Rs after running into this incident. He doesn't take the required stop/go, or (as far as I know) inform the mod that he was taking a no-fault shift R. The latter is irrelevant tho, as the rules clearly state that running into an incident is not grounds for a no-fault shift R.

  • Ralph Maiph — Overly ambitious overtake — 3 places lost
  • Simon Gymer — Failing to Stop and Go — 6 places lost

Lap 10

Kev Hammet is forced to shift R after crashing (typing Pit in apparently). He comes in for his scheduled pitstop, waits for just UNDER 30 secs and then goes. He claims to have stopped for longer than normal to compensate for the need to stop/go but there is no evidence of this. I'll ignore the slightly short stop, but can't ignore the missed stop/go. The right thing to have done was do a stop/go on the next lap. Sorry Kev, a rule is a rule.

  • Kev Hammett — Failing to Stop and Go — 6 places lost

Lap 21

Juan Vizoso goes off at Parabolica, probably confused by J Chainey who is going slowly due to low fuel. He rejoins slowly and as he is getting back up to speed, the Cooper of Martin Portman appears behind him. JV stays hard on it, but the back end steps out, collecting MP. Looking at this a second time its possible the back end came out due to warp contact from MP's Cooper. JV's Eagle is pushed into the barrier on the right, but he deliberately lets the car roll back across the track so that he is facing forward. MP has no way to avoid and then hits him and JV is knocked on his roof.

To put this in context, JV was dead last with a big gap to the next car (in fact he was lapped so he had no chance to improve his position. I feel it was unnecessary to race MP at this point, when simply moving over would have cost JV nothing. Letting the car roll back across the track was also pretty inconsiderate.

Moderator's Report

Lap1

After a good start the pack makes its way to the hairpin. Ford 24v loses his early lead and is too eager to regain the lead into the approach of the hairpin. Karan stays wide but when turns in the corner is clearly Karen's but is hit by ford24V in the side and is spun out.. no stop and go taken by ford24V.

After being spun out in the above incident, Karan made possibly the worst rejoin that I have seen in 3 years of GPL. Although Karan had been spun the car was facing back towards the oncoming traffic therefore had a full view of the race in progress. Karan still though chose to power into the oncoming vehicles and attempt a spin re-entry to the race. The ensuing chaos and destruction that followed was down purely to this awful rejoin. this in effect put the dampener on a large number of peoples race and cannot be tolerated in an online race.

Six place Penalty and Driver will be put on probation list for season 7.

Mo Ahmed: into the dreaded hairpin again and Eddie turns in for the corner. Having watched this I think Mo should have slowed and stayed back and Eddie might have tried to stay a little wider. But It was obvious to Mo that it was Eddies corner and I feel Mo was wrong to try at such a dangerous place to gain places.

This forced Eddie to Shift-R and do a SnG.

  • Mo Ahmed — Contact with E. Urbanski — 2 places lost

Ralph Maiph clips Derrick Dell, luckily this causes Del only a momentary loss of control (it was pretty hairy tho') which Del gathered up rather well.. but Ralph has a spin.

Ralph only just missed causing a bad incident and a getting himself a penalty.

Simon Gymer is cautioned; he exits the pitstop on lap 12 a tad aggressively and causes Colliss to take to the grass to avoid a coming together between the two cars. I realise the importance of keeping our time in the pits to a minimum but please all realise that pitstops need to be taken with care and drivers need to pay particular attention to exiting the pits.
