Moderator's Report

Lap 1, off the grid, Karl Doyle

Karl makes a poor start by getting into a bad tankslapper and is 50 percent responsible for the start line crash towards the rear of the grid. Warp made the accident much worse by spinning Paul Bird across the track who collected Ryk Penfold who had taken to the dirt to try to avoid all the damage. The server replay shows that Karl did not touch Paul and in fact never got closer than a cars width.

Although Karl initiates the chaos at the start with his poor start this was made worse by Malc running into him from behind, Kyalami has a narrow grid and with Paul Bird and Karl in front of him and being on the pit lane side of the track there was never any chance of overtaking in the small gap. Drivers must ensure caution at the start to avoid this type of accident.

Moderator's Report

Lap 1 into Tarzan, Andy Wright on Barry West

Andy loses the back end of the Cooper while on the brakes and veers to the left which causes Baz West to spin. As it was not a deliberate punt and the contact was side on I have this as a typical first corner racing incident.

Lap 2 into Tarzan Andy Wright

Andy again loses the back end into Tarzan and is extremely lucky not to take out Ryk Penfold.

Lap 7 Andy Wright last corner

Andy has come off in the last corner, rejoins reasonably but stays in the middle of the track which causes Baz West to have to take to the grass which slows Baz. I think Baz could have lost a place to Andy but the latter appears to lift to prevent this happening.

However this was a poor rejoin and as such Andy is issued with a warning.

Lap 19 into Tarzan, Paul Bird on Jacob Schmidt

Paul taps the back of Jacob and then a small warp gives a further nudge to Jacob, without which the damage would have not been so bad.

Normally I would have awarded a penalty but because the warp caused most time loss to Jacob this is reduced to a warning for Paul.

Lap 19 On exit of Tarzan, Von Beagle on Pete Shill

Von Beagle runs into the back of Pete which flips him over

Lap 22 Into Tarzan, Paul Bird on Malc

Although slow down the straight (Malc let Michael Boylan overtake after an incident which is clearly in no way attributable to the former) Malc had regained speed into Tarzan and was a way ahead of Paul, I think Paul misjudges the braking and runs into Malc.

Bearing in mind the fact that Paul was probably put off by Malc?s slowness down the straight this is reduced to 1 place.

  • paulwbird — Rear ending M. Bywaters — 1 place lost

Lap 22 Pete Shill and Kevin Clark, Hondenvlak corner

Pete and Kevin dispute this corner! They tangle and go off, Pete is a bit ambitious and would probably have received a warning, however Kev loses control slightly so I have it as a racing incident.

Lap 22 Pete Shill and Kevin Clark

Kevin performs a bad rejoin and collects Karl Doyle, however he had already waited for one car to go through and Pete Shill was very close to him which made it difficult to hear other cars engines.

Penalty to Kevin Clark, 3 places for bad rejoin reduced to 2 because of the proximity of Pete?s car.

Pete shift-Rs into Karl shortly after he has been collected by Kevin.

Penalty to Pete Shill, 3 places reduced to 2 because of the proximity of Kevin?s car which made it difficult to hear other cars engines.

I have further decided to reduce the penalty to 1 place for each driver due to the somewhat unique way in which they both contributed to the incident.

Lap 26 Malc on Schmidt

After a few laps of battling and a couple of unavoidable light taps these two come together more seriously, Jacob is the ultimate loser here although he had lost speed in the preceeding corner which allows Malc to get side by side with him. I have this as a racing incident because I feel both drivers could have been more cautious.

Lap 27 Malc on Boylan

This is a classic incident showing why it is worth sending replays to moderators, if I had used the server replay on its own I would have penalised Malc for turning into Michael when he was clearly behind following getting his offside rear wheel on the grass. However watching both drivers replays it is clear that you were both the victims of warp which makes it impossible to apportion any blame.

Moderator's Report

Lap 1 Start line incident

Duncan Hogbin

Duncan buzzes the lotus engine to 9100 before letting it warm up. Duncan?s engine is clearly broken as soon as he dumps the clutch and he pulls away very slowly, however he does keep in a dead straight line and could realistically do little more. Although being the initial cause of the pileup that ensues I can not penalise Duncan beyond the following,

Advice, drivers should be aware that GPL models temperature warmup and pressure build up in the engine, it is advisable to rev the engine to 4-5k for a few seconds to let this build up occur before reving higher, not doing so will usually cause engine damage as it does in this case.

Baz West

Baz manages to sneak around the slow moving Duncan and causes no danger to others due to Spa?s wide starting grid. I feel I must point out that a similar move at Monaco (big hint to all drivers) would most likely cause a pile up due to the tighter nature of the track.

Jakob Schmidt

Jakob slows to a stop in a straight line behind Duncan which is the safe and correct option bearing in mind his closeness to him.

Andy Wright

Having got into a tank slapper off the line, Andy is probably distracted and although he brakes it is too late to avoid contact I feel it could have been earlier. Caution to Andy Wright.

Dave Gymer

Dave is completely unsighted and can do nothing to avoid the incident.

Paul Bird

Paul piles into the chaos but this was caused by only seeing 4 cars ahead in my opinion and he does try to go to the left of what he can see.

Ryk Penfold and Ant Miller

Again Ryk and Ant are unsighted by the four cars ahead issue of GPL online racing.

As a foot note to this incident Paul and Ryk are both penalised 6 places for forgetting the stop and go for their Shift-R.

  • paulwbird — Failing to take Stop and Go — 6 places lost
  • Ryk Penfold — Failing to take Stop and Go — 6 places lost

Lap 1 Malmedy

Kevin Clark and Baz West are battling fairly, Baz touches the dirt and slows and Kev takes avoiding action but runs wide on the exit and spins. This part of the accident is a racing incident, however chaos again ensues and this is not helped by drivers actions, although it is obviously a very big handicap to slow down at Spa it is not so much of a handicap as being involved in a full blooded accident. As such the following drivers are all awarded a warning for not taking appropriate actions when they can clearly see cars are spinning/crashing in front of them ? the four cars ahead issue is not relevant here.

Baz West
Pete Shill
Michael Boylan

Pete Allnut makes it through by slowing properly to pick his way carefully, unfortunately he is tagged by Michael spinning back on to the track, as Michael was still out of control this is a racing incident.

Michael Shift-R's straight into friend and former team mate Ryk Penfold who somehow keeps control of the H16, breathtaking! Unfortunately this collects Ant Miller as well and Ant is not so lucky. However bearing in mind the chaos and number of cars involved in this, plus the unusual gap between cars due to the startline incident I have decided to overlook any bad Shift-R's in this incident.

Kev Clark then reverses slightly to try to rejoin, however Paul Bird runs in to him, my view of this is that it is a racing incident, Kev moved very slowly and I think Paul could have done more to avoid him as there was a very clear gap to the right of Kev.

Lap 1 La Source

Dave Gymer spins while trying to issue his pit in message, he reverses back into Michael Boylan. This is then compounded by a bad shift-r. Penalty to Dave Gymer 3 places.

Lap 5 Kev Clark loses control and collects Michael Boylan, racing incident.

Michael is clearly ahead and there is no chance for David to make a pass. It;s hard to go side by side through this corner and Michael is badly hindered while David continues.

  • David Few — Contact with M. Boylan — 1 place lost

Lap 1 Massenet: Karl Doyle hits Paul Bird from behind

Karl leaves his braking too late and runs into Paul who performs a neat 360
and continues. This triggers an incident which involves a few cars taking avoiding action.

  • Karl Doyle — Rear ending P. Bird — 2 places lost

Lap 3 Mirabeau: David Few

David loses control going into this corner and then drifts back across the track tagging Pete Shill. This looked a strange incident and apparently David's wheel fell off. These things happen and I don't intend giving any warnings beyond the advice to check your equipment prior to any league race.

Lap 15 Station Hairpin: Andy Wright hits Duncan Hogbin from behind.

Andy misjudges his braking point and runs into Duncan.

Lap 16 & 17: Michael Boylan and B Malc

Michael gets spun around due to warp at the Station hairpin, Malc takes the lead and then performs a stop and go. When he rejoins the two of them both tangle again. I think this is 50/50 but it could have been avoided as you both need to learn to allow your opponent room when you are battling. Racing incident.

There were a few other incidents which I have put down to racing incidents, one of note is when David Few laps Baz West. I'm sure Baz was aggrieved with what from his point of view was a clumsy lapping move from David, however on David's replay Baz is on the left, disappears and then reappears on the right in David's path.

Lap 7: Karl Doyle hits Kev Clark from behind after passing Baz West

Karl Doyle ? penalty 2 places, increased to 3 under totting up process, although I have used my discretion to reduce this to 2 as Karl performed an immediate stop and go.

Moderator's Report

Nothing I can add to the server replay and results, great race guys all through the field. Congrats to Malc and Andy, I was willing the Cooper on even if I knew the might of the DFV (and Malc of course to be politically correct!) would defeat it.

Stylish finish for Mr Penfold too, first time I?ve actually seen someone finish a race backwards!

Moderator's Report

Another excellent race, Malc won again but he had to work very hard for it after a bumpy landing on lap 2. Watching Ryk hold him off in the BRM for the best part of a lap was very entertaining.

Only incidents of note are a couple of spats between Michael Boylan and Baz West, I have them as racing incidents.

Results stand from the replay.

Moderator's Report

Lap 14 Michael Boylan & Malc

Malc has slowed somewhat in the dip before Moss and Michael runs into the back of him. I checked Michael?s speed carefully over a few laps and in fact he was going slower at this point than on the earlier laps. Racing incident.

Lap 23 Baz West and Jakob Schmidt

Jakob gets a good run into turn 2 and has won the corner in my opinion, Baz turns in on a line that would not have seen any contact ? there is not on the server but GPL?s prediction method determines on Baz?s client that Jakob has run into him. Racing incident.

Moderator's Report

Well I think this is quite possibly the best UKGPL I?ve ever moderated, well done chaps.

There were a couple of minor incidents but nothing worth commenting on and no blame attaching to any drivers in my opinion.

Moderator's Report

Lap 1 Baz West rear ends Kevin Clark

Although Kevin did seem quite slow into the hairpin my opinion is that this impact was avoidable.

  • Baz — Rear ending K. Clark — 2 places lost

Lap 5 Karle Doyle rear ends Pete Allnut

Classic rear end accident!

  • Karl Doyle — Rear ending P. Allnutt (plus previous penalty) — 3 places lost

Lap 16 P Bird collects Michael Boylan

Paul makes an attempt at outbraking into the hairpin, unfortunately he loses the back end and collects Michael in the process. It was an optimistic move but would probably not have resulted in impact but for the loss of control. Racing Incident.

Lap 17 Michael Boylan spins and collect Paul Bird

Racing Incident

Lap 17 Michael Boylan rejoin causes contact with Baz West

Although contact ocurred Baz was not hindered and Michael did all he could to rejoin without causing problems, unfortunately the angle of the track meant that Baz was only in his mirrors for a split second and he could not have done anything differently.

Racing Incident.
