Moderator's Report

Rick Osborne brakes too late into T1, hitting pole sitter Mike Prickett, which causes a number of other collisions between the cars following. There were no obvious mitigating circumstances for braking so late, so:

Lap1: Rick Osborn

Rick rear-ended Mike Prickett at Moss. Although you were entering the approach to the hairpin much quicker than everyone else you had ample time to slow down and hang back from the obvious cluster of cars ahead who could be seen clearly jostling for position at an impossible part of Mosport to attempt an overtake.

After hitting Mike's rear wheel and spinning him off the track he then had to wait for all following traffic to pass before doing his rejoin. which then put him in last place.

Lap4: Rick Osborn

Rick comes upon a much slower and rejoining Dug Thomson at the approach to T2A, Rick tries to pass Dug on his nearside but as Dug has regained race speed and begun his turn in for corner 2B, rick finds that he cannot make the move and contacts the kerbing under strong braking. Contact with dugs NSR wheel is made putting both cars into bad slides. Please try to bear in mind the closing speeds and subsequent closing off of perceived overtaking places.

This incident caused a knock-on effect and was the main reason for the bad accident as outlined below.

Moderator's Report

Rick Osborn - LAP 1

T1 (Curva Grande) - WARNING

After a bad start and very wide slide into the pits area, you then make a rejoin into the pack, but it seems that due to having lost some places you then drive like a "man possessed", into and through Curva Grande in a totally aggressive and reckless manner. You try to pass Neil Charlton on the inside where there was not enough room, although it should have been obvious that it was his corner and was rightfully following the racing line. A combination of warp and contact with his OSF wheel caused him to spin and wreak havoc upon five cars behind who were unable to avoid the accident that had been caused.

Rick Osborn. WARNING

T3 Lesmo1

On the entry into Lesmo1 after leaving your braking until very late you dive inside James Wright where under very heavy braking you momentarily lose control and slide wide across the apex of the corner nearly taking the front off James's car and the rear off Paul Thurston's car. This was just another occasion when some restraint would have been beneficial.

It was *not* a place and time where such moves should even be contemplated.

This move could so easily have caused another serious accident and as such driving like this cannot be tolerated.

Rick Osborn CAUTION

After sitting tight behind Paul Thurston's Lotus through Serraglio and into Ascari you once again try to make an overtaking move, which ends in another accident. You draw up alongside the rear quarter of PT when it becomes obvious to you that you are running out of road and are going to go onto the grass. You should have held your position or dropped back. By attempting to squeeze into an impossibly small section of road (considering the problems of online racing) there is contact with Paul's OSR wheel causing both of you to crash badly thereby prematurely ending Paul Thurston's and your own race.

I have watched this incident many, many times and Paul Thurston does not move over onto you or block you. Unfortunately warp played some part in your coming together.

But the real onus in avoiding this crash was for you not to have tried this pass when there just was not the room available. It must not also be assumed that if drivers make to pass someone, that in a racing environment that they must move out of your way. It's the responsibility of the overtaking driver to pull of the manoeuvre safely.

Rick Osborn PENALTY.

Due to the nature of the incidents as outlined above and a culmination of warnings for similar incidents of the same nature at previous race meetings, I have decided that the relevant PENALTY is therefore a 1-race ban suspended for 3 races starting from Watkins Glen and 20 penalty points.

  • Rick Osborn — Multiple incidents — 20.0 championship point(s) — 1 race ban (suspended)

LAP 1: Alan Hawkins and Chris Darkes. RACING INCIDENT.

Alan and Chris were rounding Curve Grande when Alan had to take avoiding action to miss the spinning Eagle of Neil Charlton. Due to warp Chris Darkes was spun off onto the grass and into the wire fencing. Alan took only the very minimum of action needed to miss the stricken eagle and it's a credit to him that a lot more carnage was not caused due to the accident in T1. I know that both Alan and Chris were fortunately able to carry on and have some good racing.

Lap 2 - 'The Loop' - James Wright

After following Rick Osborn closely up through the Esses and along Front Straight, you were still far too close to the rear of Ricks car upon entering and negotiating the Loop. Rick had a gentle but fully controlled slide infront of you, which caused his car to scrub off some speed... you also then started to understeer and push wide. There was nowhere at all for you to go other than back off as Ricks slide had not presented you with a clear overtaking advantage The only outcome of this while being too close at this part of the track was the inevitable accident. due to you then running wide you drove into Ricks OSR wheel. You also failed to take a stop and go.

You finished 11th so the places penalty is the amount of points difference from 13th place i.e 6 Points.

  • James Wright — Contact with Rick Osborn — 6.0 championship point(s)

Lap3 Hairpin: Dug Thomson

Although you can see cars in front negotiating the corner, you come into the braking area very fast indeed and turn in very tight to try to pass inside Dave Randall who is already fully committed to the turn. You hit Daves OSR rear quarter very hard and spun him off into the Armco.

Dave very gallantly sat and waited, but had to start from the back of the pack.

Lap 8 Hairpin: James Wright.

Following Neil Charlton closely into and through the hairpin you hit his gearbox on entry and very nearly again on exit, please leave more room between yourself and the car in front at these times. Neil did brake earlier than you may have expected, but as you are the car behind please make allowances for closing speeds etc. Luckily for all on this occasion the collision did not cause Neil or yourself to spin or crash.

Im allowing for warp too, but it pays to remember that just plainly being too close can cause totally avoidable incidents and accidents.
