Moderator's Report

Lap 17

Baz West has just been passed by Kev Clark after the loop. Dave Gymer is behind and sees the chance to benefit from Baz's slow exit and pulls alongside on the left. Baz moves over on Dave and he is knocked off the track behind the armco, losing heaps of time.

Although Dave had disappeared from Baz's mirrors, Baz should have been aware that he was in the blind spot and therefore it was not safe to move over. Having said that, Baz had been very careful at the loop to leave Kev room so that they could go round side by side, so I think Baz's attention was clearly more on Kev than Dave. For this reason I've reduced the penalty by 1 place. Baz also does a stop/go the following lap, although it seems to go very wrong (see below) so I've reduced the penalty by another place.

  • Bazpenalty — Side by side contact — 0 places lost

Lap 18

Baz West does a stop/go, but then shift R's onto the track (?). He doesn't do a stop/go for this and so incurs a time penalty equivalent to a slow stop/go.

  • Baz — Failing to Stop & Go after Shift R — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 20

Rolf Farrell is following Michael Boylan into the 90. Michael takes a tight line (as he normally does) and for some reason Rolf does as well. Michael brakes fairly early (as you need to do on such a tight line) and Rolf is caught out, rear ending him.

In this situation it was quite predictable that Michael would brake early. Rolf should either have taken a wider line to give him room to brake deeper (which would have opened up the exit for him as well) or have hung back a bit. Doing neither was a recipe for disaster. Rolf took a stop/go penalty, which cost him 2 places so I have reduced the penalty as a result.

  • Rolf Farrellpenalty — Read ending M. Boylan — 0 places lost

Lap 21

Baz West goes off at the loop, shift R's and doesn't do a stop/go.

  • Baz — Failing to Stop & Go after a Shift R — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 27

Baz West goes off at the loop, shift R's and doesn't do a stop/go.

  • Baz — Failing to Stop & Go after a Shift R — 15.000 seconds added

Lap 32

Tom Barton shift R's but does not do a stop/go.

  • Tom Barton — Failing to Stop & Go after a Shift R — 15.000 seconds added

Aaron Edwards should not have raced, and is therefore excluded from the results.

Moderator's Report

Lap 1

Del Brocklehurst clips the curb after the hairpin and takes out A Wright. A simple loss of control leaving Andy nowhere to go.

Racing Incident

Lap 3 Turn 3

A Wright takes a wild dive down the inside of Jared Chainey into turn 3, gets its VERY sideways but somehow gathers it all up and makes it stick. This was far too ambitious coming from several car lengths back, and had Jared turned in earlier as was his right then contact was inevitable.

Lap 6

P Bird makes his pit stop but is almost 3 seconds short. Since a short pitstop might let you get out in front (and therefore gain much more than the odd second) we have to deter drivers from doing so. The penalty is 3 x the amount not taken so 3 x 3 = 9 seconds.

  • paulwbird — Short pitstop — 9.000 seconds added

Lap 9

Baz West does a Stop & Go, but its not at all clear if he stopped the car. Had the result been close then Baz might have lost a position as a result. Please make sure you clearly stop the car before you get going.

Lap 11 T1

Del Brocklehurst is following Dave Gymer into T1, looks down the inside but holds back. Dave then brakes, Del is rather caught out and ends up level with Dave. He then gets a wheel on the grass and slides wide into Dave. I'm not sure why Del chose to take such a narrow line here, when a pass was never on, but I think he was holding expecting to tuck in behind. I think a wiser choice would have been to stay wide on the racing line.

Lap 13

M Boylan has been passed by D Few down the straight. David is on the outside, and Michael on the inside. Michael brakes quite late for an inside line and slides wide, collecting David. Michael does a stop/go and loses 1 place, and David has to shift R and also does a stop go (he could have skipped it in this case). I think considering the fact that Michael had the inside line and slower car it was ambitious to challenge David deep into the corner. I think this warrants a penalty, but its reduced by a place for taking the stop/go and another place for the fact that Michael maybe lost control slightly as he slid wide. I would have reduced it to a warning but Michael has slid wide more than once when under pressure in the 2 races this season so I feel that perhaps he is pushing a bit too hard in these circumstances.

(Note - 0 place penalty means that future penalties will be more costly due to yellow card rule.)

  • Linus27penalty — Side contact (reduced: stop/go, slight loss of control) — 0 places lost

Lap 15 T1

Del hits P Allnutt in a carbon copy of the incident with Dave Gymer. I think Del had more of a chance to hang back here, and considering what happened 4 laps before should have learnt from his mistake. The fact that Pete braked and Del again got a wheel slightly on the grass is not relevant since Del should have known both of these were possibilities.

Lap 17

Paul Bird is following Michael Boylan into Turn 1. Michael gets it very sideways, loses a lot of speed, and Paul cannot avoid hitting him. This was a racing incident with neither party at fault. Michael has to shift R but does not take a stop/go. As he clearly lost control, he is not entitled to a no-fault shift R. This means he incurs a 15 second time penalty.

  • Linus27 — Failing to Stop and Go — 15.000 seconds added

Moderator's Report

All in all, rather a messy race with too many incidents for div 2. Please take note of the comments on rejoining - your first priority is to keep out of the way of other drivers, not to get back on track as fast as possible.

Lap 1

Ben Yalland gets a good start but is faced by a wall of Ferraris ahead. He gets into the gap between them, but then realises that the one on the right will be forced left by the armco, so he moves left too to make room. Unfortunately, David Few is alongside and contact occurs, spinning both cars off the track.

The initial move between the Ferraris was not that clever - drivers should be extra careful at the start, and this was always going to create a 3 wide situation into the funnel at the end of the pitlane armco. I've reduced the penalty to a warning as Ben clearly tries to leave room for the car outside of him and I think this meant he took his eye off the other cars.

  • Ben Yallandwarning — Dangerous start - hold your line at the start

Ben ends up running parallel to the track on the grass outside. He gradually moves across and rejoins, but Peter Allnut is faced with a much slower car in front of him, which makes him spin. Ben was probably caught out a bit by the 2 behind limitation, and I also think he didn't intend to rejoin quite so abruptly, so I've reduced the penalty, although it is also increased since it was lap 1.

  • Ben Yallandpenalty — Bad rejoin — 1 place lost

Andy Wright and Karl Doyle take T1 side by side. Andy gets a better drive on the exit, and is a car length ahead before turn-in, but Karl tries to brake late and grab the inside line. Andy cuts across towards the apex, but Karl slides a bit wide and they collide.

I think Karl was mainly to blame for this one. He braked too late to be able to hold a tight line round T2, and was coming from a car length back when off the racing line so had no reason to believe he had the advantage. The fact that this was T2 on Lap 1 means that this wasn't the time for a hopeful lunge. Having said that, Andy could have left a bit more room as he knew a car was in his blind spot. In the event he paid the price, as the outside car always does. For this reason I've reduced the penalty to Karl.

  • Karl Doylepenalty — Over ambitious overtake — 2 places lost

Lap 3

Az Edwards gets a run on Rolf Farrell into T1 and takes the inside line. Rolf on the outside line cuts to the inside slightly as they approach the corner, causing contact with Az. Rolf says this veer right was not intentional, and since he came off worst (Az was unaffected) and warp may have contributed, I'll give Rolf the benefit of the doubt and not issue a penalty.

Karl Doyle is following David Few down to T1. David brakes rather early while on the outside, and while braking moves across to the inside. Karl is caught out by the change of line and speed, and rear-ends David. I'm satisfied Karl was not trying to pass here (he was miles back), plus he had little chance to avoid when David moved across.

Racing Incident

Andy Wright is following David Few into T5. David eases off very early (apparently as the car felt wrong after the T1 incident described above), but Andy doesn't appear to notice, gets too close and then cannot stop in time to avoid rear-ending David. Andy should have either left a bigger gap or taken a diferent line in the circumstances, but the early braking is a mitigating factor.

Lap 5

Michael Boylan runs a bit wide on the exit of T1, with most of the car off track but his right wheels on the curbing. Del Brockehurst thinks he has run further off track and moves left to get on the racing line. Michael then moves back on to the track proper and they collide.

I see this as a 50/50 really. Both drivers could have been a bit more careful, but it was probably just an unfortunate set of circumstances.

Racing Incident

Michael Boylan is spun round by the incident and is rolling backwards down the grass on the outside. He deliberately turns the car in to towards the track to get a quick rejoin and ends up stationary in the middle of the track. Several cars are approaching, all have to take avoiding action and 2 spin off track.

Michael would have been totally aware of the approaching cars in this case (he was looking back down the track) but still turned in towards the track. This is simply inconsiderate driving.

  • Linus27penalty — Bad rejoin — 3 places lost

Az Edwards spins on the exit of T3 and ends up rolling backwards down the grass on the outside. He then deliberately turns the wheel to swing the car back on track to get a quick getaway (just like Michael - was he watching?). Baz is approaching, and seeing a stationary car appear on the racing line is forced to take avoiding action, resulting in a shift R.

Rejoining like this is inconsiderate at best, as your car will clearly become a stationary obstacle to other drivers. I have reduced the penalty slightly, as no cars were visible when Az started his rejoin.

Ben Yalland is attempting to pass Michael Boylan on the main straight. MB covers the inside line, but Ben drives straight through the armco and passes on the inside. This clearly shows Ben is using the pitlane removal patch, which is banned in UKGPL races.

  • Ben Yalland — Using pit lane removal patch — excluded

Lap 8

David Few has the run on Michael Boylan into T1. Michael covers the inside so David goes outside and is a car length ahead at turn-in. David leaves room for Michael as he turns in, and Michael trys to stay level, but carries too much speed and drifts wide, collecting David. Warp also played a small part in the collision.

Michael was trying too hard to push a bad position here IMO. Off the racing line in a heavier car, it would have been better to give up the postion. His main responsibility was to stay on the inside line and leave room for David.

Michael also took David off at Mexico by pushing too hard from a similar bad position. Given this, I've decided to issue a warning to Michael to take more care to stay in complete control in situations with cars outside of him.

  • Linus27warning — Stay in control with cars alongside

Moderator's Report

Overall, not a bad race from most drivers, with only one serious incident. Ben Yalland drove an immaculate race to win in the BRM, although Michael may have given him a run for his money had he been luckier.

Lap 1

Colliss gets good drive out of turn 1, and passes Kev Clark. He then tries to get past David Few's Cooper, which was a slow out of T1 after running along the armco for a while. Colliss ends up nudging the curb, which unsettles the car and sends it back towards David. David at the same time is moving across (there is only room for one car at this point). The resulting contact means a reset for both David and Colliss.

This was a rash move IMO on lap 1 in such a dangerous place. The gap was narrowing, as was the track (David was being forced right as a result), and it was the overtaking drivers responsibility to make a clean pass. There is little evidence of the extra care we ask drivers to show on lap 1. The penalty is increased due to lap 1 but reduced as the incident was partly caused by the curb upsetting Coll's car.

  • Colliss Collpenalty — Over-ambitious overtake — 2 places lost

Paul Bird brakes too late or not hard enough, almost taking out Az Edwards at the gasworks hairpin. Paul tells me that this was down to his pedals moving, and since there was little effect on Az I don't think its necessary to take any action.

Lap 6

David Few rear-ends Baz West at the station hairpin. David's client replay clearly shows this as a major warp.

Racing Incident

Lap 15

Az Edwards rear ends Michael Boylan at the station hairpin. Looking at the replay, Az is fighting the car on the curbs after a scrappy exit from Mirabeau, and I think this distracts him at the crucial moment. Michael loses the place but very little time, and Az gives him the place back a few corners later.

I think a penalty for this would be a bit harsh here, especially as it would result in a ban.

  • Aaron 'Az' Edwardswarning — Take more care to stay in control under braking with cars in front

Lap 16

Az Edwards is again chasing Michael Boylan into the station hairpin. MB runs very wide, nudging the bales. Az takes the inside line and is past MB on the exit. Unfortunately, Az doesn't quite leave enough room for MB and MB is effectively blocked by the bales on the exit. Warp was also a factor here.

Az really should have held a tighter line here - drivers must leave room for cars alongside. Since MB went so wide and Az got in front, plus the fact that warp played a part and the hairpin is very hard to squeeze round I'll give Az the benefit of the doubt and just issue a warning.

Lap 18

Steve Alton is behind Paul Bird approaching the now notorious station hairpin. Paul slides wide, and Steve tucks in tight round the inside. On the exit, Paul turns in slightly more than necessary and Steve hits the curb, pushing the car slightly wide. Their wheels tangle and they both spin. Luckily they both end up pointed the right way with no loss of position.

I'd call this a racing incident, as both drivers were trying to do the proper thing but didn't quite get the execution right (at a very tricky corner).

Racing Incident

Lap 19

A huge crowd has gathered at the station hairpin after all the action there, and gets a grandstand view as Michael Boylan (again!) is being followed by Rolf Farrell. Rolf has been following for several laps, so knows the braking points by this point. Michael runs slightly wide, Rolf turns in on his normal line expecting Michael to run wide all the way round, but Michael slows and turns back onto the tight line. Rolf then clips Michael, half spinning him. Rolf waits for Michael to get going.

I'm satisfied this was not a passing attempt, but just an error of judgement about where MB's car was going to end up. Rolf was still in the wrong tho, as drivers must not commit to a line until they know it will be clear. The fact that Rolf had spent several laps behind MB, that MB does seem to turn very tightly after running wide (it looks odd to me on the replay somehow), that Rolf let Michael back in front and that Rolf would get a ban (undeserved in my opinion) mean that I've reduced the penalty to a warning. Next time tho, Rolf will not be getting the benefit of the doubt!

  • Rolf Farrellwarning — Don't commit to a line until you know it is clear

Lap 23

Michael Boylan is lapping Paul Bird at Massenet. Michael closes right up to within a car length looking to pass, and Paul seems to pull right to get out of the way a bit, has to back out of the gas as a result, and MB is caught out, rear-ending him. Warp played a significant part in the collision.

This was just a racing incident, especially with the warp involved. I do think tho that Michael would have been better advised to leave a bit more room in a place where he could not pass and in a situation where Paul was very likely to let him through at the first opportunity.

Racing Incident

Lap 30

Michael Boylan used shift R at the start of lap 28 after blowing his engine. Coming to the end of lap 30 , he tries to take a stop/go just before the line. His wheels don't actually stop turning before he guns the throttle to get over the line ahead of 2 coopers behind.

In the circumstances, a correct stop/go wouldn't necessarily have stopped Michael retaining his position, but there is a chance that it would (the Honda is not the easiest car to get moving from a standing start). The way we normally apply the rules in these cases is to issue an appropriate time penalty if there is any chance the finishing positions might have been affected. Since Michael also took the stop go outside the 2 lap window required, I have to give Michael a 5 second time penalty, which puts him back a place behind David Few (who crossed the line on 3 wheels!).

I should add that Michael had a pretty unfortunate race, being involved in several incidents that were not his fault. To lose another place at the end seems to add insult to injury, and the temptation to try to even things out by ignoring this is quite strong. However, this is not the job of the moderators (thank goodness!) and the only way to be fair to everyone is to consistently enforce the rules. Sorry Michael :-)

Moderator's Report

Overall an excellent race as far as incidents are concerned. The standard is getting better every race, so I look forward to a zero incident race next time :-) (I can dream).

Lap 3

Baz West spins at Tarzan and ends up sideways across the track. He immediately gets going and moves onto the racing line while other cars are all around him at higher speed.

While it was a tricky spot, waiting for a few seconds for a gap in the traffic would have been more prudent - It was only by chance that one of the other cars was not hit and Karl Doyle lost a place avoiding Baz.

  • Bazwarning — Bad rejoin

Lap 13

Ben Yalland is fighting to pass Michael Boylan down the long straight. Ben leaves plenty of room for Michael on his right, so much in fact that he gets his left wheels on the dirt. He struggles to get the car back on the road without swerving into Michael, and almost manages it, but Baz West ahead brakes for Tarzan and Ben has to brake as well. With a wheel on the dirt he loses control and slides into Baz.

I'm satisfied Ben was trying to do the right thing here but simply lost control, so no penalty is necessary.

Moderator's Report

Another basically clean race, with only a couple of incidents. Pat yourselves on the back again :-)

Lap 1

Collis has a good run on Rolf Farrell up the hill after Eau Rouge. He is himself being closely followed by Michael Boylan. Collis pulls right to pass Rolf, and Michael closes up behind Rolf, although I don't think he was going for the pass straight away. To make sure that he can take a wide line through the kink, Rolf backs off just at the wrong moment, catching Michael out and bringing them much closer than otherwise would have happened. Warp plays a small part and the resulting contact sends Rolf spinning to the outside with Michael unaffected.

I'm happy that this was just an unfortunate racing incident as it would have been very hard to anticipate Rolf backing off when he did.

Racing Incident

Lap 2

Michael and Steve Alton are battling side by side up the hill afetr Eau Rouge. Michael is marginally ahead and on the outside as they approach the kink. He turns in for the kink, taking more room than he is really entitled to. A big warp from Steve's car then swipes Michael off, Steve being unaffected.

Normally when warp is involved then I don't issue penalties, but in this case I feel contact would have occurred anyway owing to over-aggressive driving. It would have been easy to hold a wide line through the kink, and knowing another car was alongside I feel Michael should have done this. Since he did leave a tiny amount of room, plus the warp involved, I have reduced the penalty.

  • Linus27penalty — Side by side contact — 1 place lost (plus 2 for penalty points)

Moderator's Report

Overall another good race, but a few more incidents than last time.

Lap 1

Paul Bird is following Kev Clarke into T1. Kev backs of slightly early as there are a lot of cars bunching ahead, but Paul is too close to react and smashes into the back of Kev. Its a tricky corner, but that makes it even more important to leave some room to allow for the unexpected. I've reduced the penalty slightly as Kev did lift earlier than Paul might have expected, but it was lap 1, so that rather cancels it out.

  • paulwbirdpenalty — Rear end shunt — 2 places lost

Michael Boylan has to take some evasive action to avoid the Paul/Kev smash, so Coll dives in the gap he vacates on the inside. On the exit of the corner Michael moves back to the right assuming it to be free, but Coll is there and there is contact.

The incident was caused by Michael moving into a gap he didn't know was empty. This is a common problem at the start with so many cars around. However, due to the distraction of the previous incident + the fact that Coll bounced off the curb and was further across than intended, I feel that this was an easy mistake to make, so I've reduced the penalty to a warning.

  • Linus27warning — Side/side contact — also, 2 places lost for penalty points

Lap 10

Coll is following Baz into the Sanson Elbow, but overcommits down the inside and rear ends Baz.

This was just a simple case of braking too late. Baz doesn't brake later than the lap before, and anyway, Coll was not close enough the last time round to be able to tell the braking point.

  • Colliss Collpenalty — Rear end shunt — 2 places lost

Baz spins off to the outside and into the hay bales, but deliberately allows his car to roll back across the track onto the racing line to make a quick getaway possible. Michael Boylan has nowhere to go and runs into him.

This was very similar to the penalties given to Michael and Az at Kyalami. If you spin off the track then you must make every effort to stay off the track. In real life you would do it just to avoid being killed by an approaching car, but GPL makes it too easy to ignore this. I've reduced the penalty slightly due to the tricky position Baz would have ended up in had he not rolled back on track.

  • Bazpenalty — Bad rejoin — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Lap 18

Baz and Kev Clarke have been enjoying an epic battle for several laps. As they enter T1 for the last time, Kev gets a run up the inside, but Baz closes the door and they collide, taking both cars off.

I've looked long and hard at this, and my gut reaction was to say that Baz was at fault as he turned in with a car alongside. However, it's not that simple. This was just the end of a great fight, with plenty of sensible driving from both Kev and Baz. Both drivers felt at least partly responsible for the incident and both lost out. The clincher for me was that Kev chose to let Baz back in front afterwards. It would be a bit daft for me to reverse this without very clear evidence of one driver being to blame, so I've decided to call it a racing incident.

Moderator's Report

Apart from the turn 1 mess, a very clean race. Keep this up and I won't have a job!

Lap 1 Turn 1

Az Edwards gets a decent start and is running down to T1 on the inside edge of the track. Steve Alton is well ahead and on the outside. Az tries to brake late into the corner, and almost gets level, but in doing so he loses the back end and takes out Steve, who had cut fairly close to the apex.

Az was being too ambitious here. He was way back from Steve on a bad line, and still tried to outbrake him. He was nowhere near level at turn-in (a key factor in judging these incidents), so its no surprise that he lost control at the last moment. Simple loss of control is not penalised, but when it's caused by poor judgement then its a different story. The penalty is increased due to this being lap 1 turn 1.

  • Aaron 'Az' Edwardspenalty — Over-ambitious overtake — 3 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Lap 6

Rolf Farrell has been followed for many laps by Mike Prickett. Mike sees a chance to get past at Becketts, manages to get alongside before turn-in, but then slides a bit wide mid corner and Rolf is pushed off. Its not my job to Judge Mike, but Rolf did nothing wrong, so from a div 2 perspective this was just a racing incident.

Moderator's Report

Lap 1

A Edwards is following Dave Gymer into Lavant corner, goes a touch too deep and loses control under braking, sliding into Dave.

Although I think Az might have taken a little more care so early in the race, its still really a loss of control rather than bad judgement so I call this a racing incident.

Baz West and Michael Boylan are not far behind as Dave & Az come together, and Michael sees a chance to get level down the inside as they go round Lavant. Michael is level before turn in, and tries to stay there through the 2nd apex, but Baz comes back across and there is contact - Baz is pushed off but Michael is unaffected.

Several factors affected this incident. In theory they should have been under a yellow flag but its quite likely that Michael would not have been shown one, following so closely on the previous incident. Michael tries to stay on the inside and leaves some room for Baz, but he does slide a bit wide. Baz also leaves room on the inside but not much. There is also a tiny amount of warp as you might expect. Overall I think this was just a racing incident, with neither driver taking the other's space, just a case of them getting too close to each other.

Lap 2

Baz West collides with a spun David Few, resets but doesn't take a stop/go. This sort of incident doesn't qualify to skip a stop/go so Baz incurs a time penalty of 10 secs.

  • Baz — Failing to Stop and Go after Shift-R — 10.000 seconds added

Lap 9

Karl Doyle hit s the pitwall, resets, and then pits next lap. He does his stop/go, moves up the pitlane a bit and then does his normal pitstop. This is not allowed - stop/gos must not be taken on the same lap as a normal pitstop (for obvious reasons, just as in real motorsport). Therefore, Karl gets a 10 second time penalty for effectively skipping a stop/go.

  • Karl Doyle — Failure to stop and go — 10.000 seconds added

Lap 12

M Boylan blows his engine and resets but takes no stop/go. Therefore he gets a time penalty.

  • Linus27 — Failing to Stop and Go after Shift-R — 10.000 seconds added

Lap 13/14

Michael Boylan is followed closely through the chicane by Baz West. Michael moves to the left on the exit, but Baz gets a good run on him and looks to pass on the right. Michael slowly drifts to the right up the straight, preventing the pass. He then moves back to the left to take the racing line for T1. I feel this is wrong for two reasons. Firstly, Michael moves 3 times in one straight - left, right and then left again. This is too many. He also takes an age to move across the track back to the right, and effectively holds the centre line for most of the overtaking portion of the straight. This is also against the rules. I would also point out that Michael has been warned of this more than once before.

  • Linus27penalty — Blocking — 3 places lost (plus 3 for penalty points)

Lap 15

Michael Boylan is rejoining after coming off at St Mary's. Paul bird rounds the corner and looks to pass down the left, but Michael is fighting to get back up to speed on the right. Michael then appears to veer left just as Paul veers right, and they collide in the middle of the track.

I feel both drivers could have handled this better by leaving more room, but the incident seems to be mainly caused by both cars veering unintentionally at the wrong moment, so I call this a racing incident.

Lap 19

Andy Wright is coming up to lap Baz West as they approach the chicane. For whatever reason, Andy decides to cut the first part of the chicane on the right, and nips past Baz. Baz is rather surprised but avoids contact.

Although this had no real bearing on the race as it turned out, I don't feel that I can just ignore it. Baz might have lost control finding a car beside him so unexpectedly. Rolf Farrell, ahead of Andy, might have seen the quick lap time and over-driven to stay ahead. Ben Yalland behind might have given up the chase for the same reason. Who knows? The fact is that this was clearly against the rules and Andy knew it, so I feel I have no alternative but to issue a penalty.
