Moderator's ReportLap 1: L.Wong rear ends M.Portman coming into the Loop and spins off. M.Portman continues on.
Lap 13 M.Portman shift-R's but does not Stop & Go. This does not change the results since Martin retired with 11 laps remaining.
Lap 15: Ford24v bad pit entry, leading to a collision with A.Nevill.
Lap 15: M.Portman puts a wheel on the grass & loses control, colliding with L.Wong. Racing incident. |

Moderator's ReportLap 1 Pile-up. K.Hammett passes J.Ball just after the start line, moves left and clips him.
K.Saxena - couldn't have avoided J.Ball, but diving to the left at the start was extremely an extremely dangerous move and could potentially have caused exactly the kind of incident that did in fact happen to K.Hammett & J.Ball.
K.Saxena takes a Shift-R, no SG taken. This was a non-fault Shift-R, so no penalty is applied. Lap 1 S.Gymer moves inside K.Lawrie at the Peralta, but drifts wide into K.Lawrie.
Lap 2 K. Saxena - contact with C. Griffin at the Esses.
Lap 2 M.Spliph - contact with D.Allan at the Peralta.
lap 3 C.Griffin loses control & slides into the path of K.Hammett. Racing incident. Lap4 K.Saxena looses it at T1 and collects L.Wong. Racing incident. Lap9 K.Lawrie contact with M.Spliph at the Esses. This was a poor place to attempt a pass, but there was a pretty big warp after K.Lawrie had already backed off. Considering the warp involved and that M.Spliph did nothing wrong he was entitled to a no fault shift-R. Lap13 L.Wong pitstops for 23 seconds. Not only was this 2 seconds short, it was 3 laps too late. L.Wong attempted to pit on lap 12 too, but missed the entry. Pitstops are part of the race, and it's just as important to practice this as the start and lapping the circuit. A fast lap may gain you a second, but a poor pitstop will lose you ten! Paul Harrington's GPLWait utility will help you time your stops better if you're not already using it.
This race involved several instances of poor judgement and impatience when approaching an incident. Please make sure you take care and slow down if necessary to avoid spinning cars. You'll lose alot less time by slowing down a bit than being hit by an out of control car. |
April 27, 2003, 10:31:00 PM +0100 - Kyalami (1961-67) - UKGPL Season 7 (2003) Division 3 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Moderator's ReportOnce again alot of incidents in the first couple of laps, costing a great deal of time to those involved, but those incidents involved far fewer drivers. Definitely a big improvement on Mexico! A race is not won on the first lap, as Simon Gymer's excellent result clearly shows. Lap 1 M.Spliph pulls over at the start towards G.Houghton.
Lap 1 V.Kwiker cuts the course at the start by ducking into the pitlane. It doesn't gain him any places, but potentially it could have been very advantageous if there had been an incident at the start. The rules do not mention this type of move specifically, but it is certainly not something you could get away with in real life, and is not in keeping with the sporting nature of the league.
Lap 1: T.Whiting turns in to N.Wood at T1, spinning Tim out. This wasn't an ambitious passing attempt by Neil, but Tim was clearly ahead into the corner and Neil should have tucked in behind rather than try to maintain a bad position. Tim and R.Maiph were well over to the left into the braking zone, but it looks like Tim was trying to leave room for Ralph and turned in to Neil. In Tim's defence Neil was in his blind spot, but nevertheless TW put himself in a bad position by leaving the door open into T1, and should have stayed further over to the right to cover the inside line. Having said that, inevitably the car behind has a much better view of the gap between them, and must therefore take the burden of responsibility for making sure they don't collide.
Lap 1 M.Portman nudges D.Allen into V.Kwiker. A sudden slow-down of the cars ahead (caused by T.Whiting/N.Wood's incident) caught Martin by surprise because he was only able to see 4 cars ahead. Racing incident. Lap 1: D.Allan rearends C.Griffin after missing his braking point. DA shift-R'd and took a stop & go on lap 3 after missing the pit entrance on lap 2.
Lap 2: K.Saxena rejoins after a spin but collides with C.Griffin. Karan waited for several cars to pass and it was unfortunate that Clive came around the corner just as Karan started to move. It may have been better to reverse onto the grass & get the car pointing the right way before rejoining though. Racing incident. Lap 2: C.Griffin collides with E.Urbanski who had just shift-R'd after blowing his engine. Unfortunately the reset point at the start of the straight is on the racing line, but if you find yourself in this position, stay over to one side of the track (off the racing line) until you are up to speed.
Lap 3: P.Adams rejoins after spinning off, D.Allen takes to the grass to avoid PA and spins. PA waits for DA. Racing incident. Lap 8: T.Whiting turns in towards G.Houghton as GH passes, and is unfortunately spun out by a warp from Graham's car. Racing Incident, but bear warp in mind if you go side-by-side into a corner, it's fairly predictable, so make sure you leave room for this. Lap 16: V.Kwiker and T.Whiting come together at T1. Vinny should have left room rather than just taking the racing line, and clearly knew Tim was attempting to pass. Since Vinny took a stop & go, and given the warp involved, I'll put this down as a racing incident, but please make sure you know where the cars around you are when you turn in, and leave room if you aren't sure. If you are attempting a pass, try to make sure your opponent can see you before you move in, and bear in mind that a little warp in the corners is quite common, so leave as much room as you can. Lap 22: J.Ball rear ends D.Allen as Dave slows unexpectedly. Racing incident. Lap 23: D.Jones spectacularly rearends K.Lawrie as Derek pulls out to pass on the straight. This would have been an excellent draughting pass by DJ, but he just left it a little too late before pulling out. Keith was entitled to a non-fault shift-R here and took it.

Moderator's ReportA great race to watch with some excellent scraps for position. Congratulations to Graham Houghton for a well deserved win. Lap 1

On a final note there were a few comments about blocking on the straight by driving down the centreline. This is particularly frustrating at Zandvoort because it's the only real passing opportunity. While I didn't see any specific case that would warrant a penalty, would all drivers please check the rules on this and be aware that blocking carries a 3 place penalty. |

Moderator's ReportWell deserved & long overdue first UKGPL win for Karan Saxena, although unfortunately a timing error with his pitstop puts him down to 2nd place. Well done also to the majority of drivers that got through Les Combes without incident on lap 1. Lap 1
As V.Kwiker regains control of his car after colliding with K.Lawrie, and D.Allan, who had swerved to avoid the same collision, meet in the middle & spin each other out. Lap 1
As E.Urbanski attempts to stop his dead car, he loses control & veers back out into the traffic. Most drivers avoid him but unfortunately C.Griffin loses the 'left or right' gamble & tries to pass slowly on the outside as Eddie gets back off the racing line. As they approach the now backwards E.Urbanski, P.Adams correctly slows and steers around the spun car, but M.Portman doesn't and slams into the back of P.Adams. This was avoidable, and turned a minor incident into a major one.
R.Maiph Shift-R's but doesn't SnG.
E.Urbanski pulls away slowly with K.Lawrie right behind. Lap 2 Lap 3: K.Saxena's pitstop is only 8 seconds instead of 10 for the Brabham.
Lap 9
Several drivers shift-R'd during the practice session, notably just after the Masta Kink. This is not allowed and is clearly stated in the rules. However, this is not something I had previously checked for since I started modding, so rather than going back & checking the last few races, I will let this pass. Please note that I will be checking for this in future though, and if it causes a problem for another driver it will be treated as a bad rejoin, with the associated 3 place penalty. |

Moderator's ReportAnother gripping race to watch, with plenty of close racing and battles for position all the way down the field. Unfortunately the price you pay for close racing is quite a few racing incidents, but the standard of driving overall was excellent. Moderator's ReportFirstly, I must apologise for the tight grid. There was a notification of a change to the servers that I should have been aware of but hadn't seen, and any rumours about mods keeping you on your toes are entirely false! Well done everyone who managed to take advantage of it though. At the end of the day it was the same situation for everyone and some dealt with it better than others. Lap 1
Lap 3
Lap 11 Lap 10 Lap 18 On a final note, Jon Ball clouted the bridge rather impressively (and amusingly) on lap 8. In the 'Aerobatic Stunt' contest that several drivers appeared to have taken part in for this race, Jon's spectacular crash wins him the booby prize of this mention in the mod's report. ;-) |

Moderator's ReportFirstly, although the race announcement stated a 23 lap race, the race length was actually set to 26 laps on the server. Although I don't believe anyone ran out of fuel as a result, I can only offer my apologies if it caused a problem. The main effect of this though was that the pitstop window changed. Taking into consideration the windows for both a 23 lap & 26 lap race everyone complied with one window or the other though. Only one incident of note in this race, towards the end of lap1 Tim Whiting loses it & quickly recovers on the last corner before the chicane. After he recovers his car clips the front of Keith Lawrie's Cooper, spinning Keith off & into Tom Goodall. |
