Summary

A brilliantly consistent drive by John Bradbury enabled him to take the win from Hristo Itchov. The extra pace of John’s Lotus meant that Hristo had to push very hard in his Ferrari to stay in touch. Eventually, after a couple of trips on the grass, Hristo had to settle for second place. Gasper Lednik secured the final podium spot ahead of a swarm of Colin Chapman’s creations.

The PRO rules have introduced a new dimension to the racing with interesting mechanical failures. On lap 11 Galiesch Darksoul was accelerating down the main straight but as he selected top gear it appears the clutch broke locking his rear wheels. He struggled to regain control and just managed to pull off into the infield as Kevin Williams thundered by. Kevin was very lucky he missed Galiesch by inches!

Lap 1 Turn 1 – Paul McCluskey and Kruger Eng

Slight warp contact is made between Paul McCluskey and Kruger Eng forcing Kruger off onto the grass. He prepares to rejoin but applies slightly too much throttle and the back end of the car steps out and he ends up practically stationary on the racing line where he is collected by the unfortunate John Roberts who had nowhere to go. Nigel Bradbury and Kevin Williams had no chance of avoiding the ensuing wreckage but thankfully Derek Howe and Steve Smith managed to squeeze by unscathed.

Kruger’s bad rejoin was the cause of the accident but his lack of control on the grass was a mitigating factor. In this situation he should have waited until the rest of the field had passed by since the racing line was on the section of track he had to rejoin on. The normal penalty of 3 places for a bad rejoin has been mitigated to 2 places because of a lack of control. However this was a first lap incident attracting an extra place penalty.

  • Kruger Engepenalty — Bad Rejoin — 3 places lost

Lap 5 Turn 3 - Kruger Eng and Paul McCluskey

After the first lap debacle, Kruger was amazingly able to continue until he was unceremoniously rear-ended by Paul at Turn 3.

Lap 33 Turn 8 – Paul McCluskey, Jason Daborn, Syd Drake and Hristo Itchov.

Paul looses control in turn 7 and takes to the sand. He joins in turn 8 but doesn’t keep well left as he attempts to get back up to speed. Consequently side-by-side contact is made with Jason Daborn and they both spin off. Syd and Hristo have to take avoiding action and despite some minor contact they manage to escape largely unscathed.

Moderator's Report

Summary

A near flawless drive by Galiesch Darksoul saw him take his maiden Master’s win. He was on-track for the entire 28 laps despite almost binning it at the Bosche Kurve on the last lap. Fortunately for him the Cosworth held together which is more than can be said for Ken’s engine, which let go while he was leading. Having said that Ken would have needed to stop for a 4 second pit stop which would have given a few drivers a chance to catch up. Kruger Enge drove an excellent race, including a perfect rejoin on lap 2, to secure his first UKGPL podium on a first-time visit to Zeltweg. Gasper Lednik brought his Brabham home in a creditable third place.

The race had a significant number of retirements, three due to crashes and two because of engine blow-ups. Unfortunately there were also four discos. The first one happened to Jason “RMJ” Daborn at 4:39. This appears to be an isolated event but the other three (Rik Briant, Lorenzo Galluzzi and Syd Drake) all occurred at 4:52. Although this is very unfortunate it doesn’t constitute a red flag situation (see bottom of Racing Etiquette page in the rules section of the web site) so the race will not be re-run.

Allan Davis and Hristo Itchov - Lap 2 – Dr.Tiroch Kurve

After a blistering start in the Eagle, Allan holds second place ahead of Hristo who is desperate to find a way past in his BRM before Ken disappears in the Lotus. As they approach Dr.Tiroch Kurve on lap 2, Allan experiences some understeer and runs wide. Hristo keeps on the gas and tries to go for the pass on the inside. Allan slows enough to cancel out the understeer and halts his drift sideways. By this time Hristo is committed and can’t avoid making contact with Allan’s rear wheel. Although the contact is slight, it’s enough to result in both drivers spinning off and out of the race.

Allan did nothing wrong and Hristo was entitled to go for the gap that had opened up. However it is the following driver’s responsibility to make sure the pass is clean. Consequently, Hristo must shoulder the responsibility for the incident but the fact that Allan had partially lost control is a mitigating factor. Consequently the normal 2 place penalty is reduced to 1.

  • Hristo Itchovpenalty — Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

A blistering start from Hristo saw him take the lead from pole-sitter Nat Wald. Despite a valiant effort Hristo couldn't keep his Brabham ahead of the Eagles of Nat and Neil and eventually he had to settle for third place. In the end it was a comfortable win for Nat who did just enough to keep ahead of Neil who was a worthy runner-up. A major pile-up on lap one, three engine blow-ups and two discos resulted in a heavy attrition rate with only seven finishers completing the race distance.

Lap 1 - Stavelot - John Bradbury, Syd Drake, Gasper Lednik, John Roberts, Derek Howe and Nigel Bradbury

After a dice with Jason Daborn, Steve Smith gets a poor exit from Masta and looses out again in a slip streaming competition with Kevin Williams and Ken Murray. Steve has had to give up the racing line on the approach to Stavelot so he does the sensible thing and stays on the inside line. John Bradbury is approaching fast and tries to go around the outside of Steve but he doesn't make it and crashes out. Syd Drake can see John's Honda bouncing along the haybales and slows down in case he needs to take avoiding action. Gasper is following Syd but doesn't slow down and instead overtakes Syd on the inside (its more of a case of taking avoiding action rather than making a concerted effort to overtake). Consequently Gasper runs wide opening the door for Syd who sees the opportunity to re-take the place on the exit. As they accelerate away warp contact is made. Gasper ends up in the hedge but Syd's Lotus pirouettes down the middle of the track on its roll bar.

This results in another unfortunate series of events. Kruger Enge clips Syd's Lotus and spins but manages to continue. John Roberts can see what is happening and slows to take avoiding action. Unfortunately Derek Howe, who is following John, is probably unsighted and fails to anticipate John's skilful attempts to avoid the carnage. Consequently Derek rear-ends John's Lotus, they end up in fields on opposite sides of the track and both drivers are out of the race. Next along are Clive and Simon who just sail through the flying wreckage without a scratch, amazingly lucky. Finally it is the turn of Nigel Bradbury to get caught up in the melee and his race ends after he clips Syd's stricken Lotus.

It is not fair to apportion blame to any particular individual for this incident, or rather series of incidents. The lesson to be learnt here is that the race cannot be won on the first lap it can only be lost.

Racing Incident.

Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

Unfortunately this race was plagued with technical problems that meant many of the favourites were sidelined with frozen screens. Apparently this has happened before and it appears to be down to the track itself. Although this was very disappointing for the drivers concerned the problem was not severe enough to warrant a re-run. However given that the problems seemed to be down to the track, it is recommended that this track is not used again for UKGPL races.

As far as the race was concerned, a steady drive by Clive earned him a well-deserved first place. Syd showed an improvement in form to secure second place on the podium with Jason claiming third spot. There were some close battles at the rear of the field that generally involved excursions into the "kitty litter". Exciting to watch but not the way to earn a place on the podium.

Lap 1 - Turn 1 - Kruger Enge, Galiesch Darksoul and Gasper Lednik

Kruger and Galiesch are side-by-side into turn 1. Kruger makes a valiant effort to hold the inside line but his cold tyres haven't the grip and his Ferrari understeers a little. As Kruger and Galiesch exit the corner slight contact is made and Galiesch has a slow spin. Several cars dodge around the stranded Eagle but Gasper can't avoid it and makes minor contact.

Lap 1 - Turn 2 - Galiesch Darksoul and John Roberts

John has to wait for the pack to filter through turn 1 and he overtakes Galiesch who is recovering from the incident at turn 1. John makes a clean pass but is slower through the apex than Galiesch (who is accelerating hard) expects. John did absolutely nothing wrong but his move didn't give Galiesch much chance to back off the throttle before contact was made.

Racing incident.

Summary

Despite a spin on lap five, Hristo Itchov secured a comfortable win. Ken Murray and Mick Chapman drove steady races to claim second and third spots respectively. After setting the pace in the early stages, a few too many spins cost Neil Stratton a place on the podium.

Lap 1 – Paradis – Syd Drake and John Roberts

Syd is gaining on Clive Loynes and is much faster through Paradis. Syd has to back off to avoid a rear-end shunt but his manoeuvre causes him to run wide and into the grass. John Roberts is close behind Syd, sees him take to the grass and as John accelerates down the straight he moves over to the right anticipating Syd’s rejoin. Unfortunately Syd needs more than half the road to regain control and in the process makes side-by-side contact with John. John spins out, looses a wheel and has to retire on lap one for the fourth time in five races.

Syd did try to stay left but nevertheless he is responsible for the incident, John did everything he could to avoid contact. The extra place penalty for a lap one incident is mitigated because of the loss of control.

  • Syd Drakepenalty — Side-by-side contact — 2 places lost (plus 2 for penalty points)

Moderator's Report

Summary

A low turn out meant the guarantee of a good points haul for all the starters. After securing pole and setting the pace for 29 of the 30 laps, Hristo made a small mistake at turn 1 on the last lap clipping the grass and loosing a wheel in the aftermath. Hristo's crash gifted the win to Kruger Enge who had driven a faultless race ahead of Clive Loynes and a lucky Jason Daborn who was fortunate enough to survive a somersault followed by half a dozen pirouettes. It just goes to show that you should never give up until the flag has dropped.

Lap 7 Turn 1 - Ken Murray, Jason Daborn and Galiesch Darksoul

Ken spins out and ends up parked on the grass on the outside of the circuit facing the wrong way. Clive is following, sees Ken in trouble and slows a little before sailing by into third spot. Ken then proceeds to do a doughnut in an effort to point his Brabham the right way but he ends up parking his car on the racing line just over a blind crest. Despite a valiant effort from Jason, a three car pile-up involving Ken, Jason and Galiesch ensues.

  • Ken Murraypenalty — Bad rejoin — 3 places lost

Notes:

Ken Murray appears to have been discoed yards from the finish line as he disappears from the server replay. The client replay shows Ken crossing the line to complete the race distance. Consequently his third place finish, prior to the application of the above penalty, had been reinstated.

Moderator's Report

After an enforced absence waiting for a phone line in his new house, John Bradbury returned to the track with an emphatic flag to flag victory. John becomes the first driver to win two races this season. John Roberts whose run of bad luck finally came to an end secured second place. Congratulations John. Third place went to Hristo Itchov with a heroic drive through the field after his Honda was swamped off the line.

Lap 4 - Stowe - Neil Stratton and Lorenzo Galluzzi

Neil slipstreams Lorenzo down the Hangar Straight. Lorenzo cleverly holds the inside line to force Neil round the outside. They round Stowe side-by-side but unfortunately warp contact is made and Neil is punted off the track.

Warp incident.

Lap 6 - Hangar Straight - Syd Drake and Ken Murray

Syd makes a mess of Becketts and a minor racing incident ensues which involves himself, Ken Murray, Neil Stratton and to a lesser extent Jason Daborn. Thankfully all the drivers are able to continue but the race resumes with a drag race to Chapel. Syd is in the lead but Ken has the inside line and he overtakes Syd but runs wide and onto the grass and he can't get the power down. Consequently Syd has a much better drive onto the Hangar Straight and gains hand over fist on Ken. Syd goes for a pass on Ken's left but Ken moves over and Syd is forced onto the grass and contact is made.

Syd could have backed off and the incident may have been avoided however it was Ken who moved over without taking notice of the Ferrari in his mirrors. Having taken to the grass on the exit of Chapel, Ken should have realised that he&#39d be slow onto the Hangar Straight and was likely to come under attack. Consequently Ken must shoulder the blame for the incident.

  • Ken Murraypenalty — Side-by-side contact — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Lap 28 - Copse - Syd Drake and Jason Daborn

Syd is much faster than Jason over the finish line but he is a long way back as they approach Copse. Nevertheless Syd tries to overtake on the inside. Jason takes his normal racing line but is punted off by Syd as he approaches the apex. Although Syd's move was ambitious he would have made the corner but it was his responsibility to make a clean pass. Syd hadn't achieved sufficient overlap to claim the corner when contact was made so he must take the blame for the incident.

  • Syd Drakepenalty — Side-by-side contact — 2 places lost (plus 5 for penalty points)

Moderator's Report

Summary

A low turn out and a high attrition rate meant the only the podium finishes completed the race distance. Congratulations must go to Kruger Enge for a fine display of fast consistent driving. John Roberts also drove a faultless race to take second spot on the podium. A couple of excursions on the grass (when he out-braked himself) put paid to any chance of a win for Clive but nevertheless he collected some valuable points for a well earned third place.

A special mention must go to Syd Drake who held a comfortable lead in his Lotus on lap 8 when the engine let go. Everyone else, apart from the unfortunate Mick Chapman who was discoed on lap 1, managed to crash on their own accord.

Lap 3 – Virage de Tetre Rouge – Rik Bryant

Rick spins out and is facing the wrong way. He tries to rejoin but doesn’t check for approaching cars. Consequently he pulls across the track in front of Steve Smith. Minor contact is made but fortunately it’s not terminal and both cars can continue undamaged. There is enough room on the slip road to manoeuvre the car so that it is facing the correct way whilst ensuring that there is a clear view up the road to check for following cars. No harm was done but the incident does warrant a caution.

  • RIKBRIANTcaution — less than ideal rejoin

Moderator's Report

Summary

A faultless drive by Jason Daborn earned him top spot on the podium. Ken Murray opted for the Lotus, which meant he needed to make a pit stop. Nevertheless he claimed second place with Kruger Enge in the final podium position. There was some close exciting racing, particularly between Galiesch and Neil, until Neil went wide at turn 8 and lost contact.

Lap 1 - Turn 1 - Syd Drake and Allan Davis

Warp is clearly evident on the client replay and to a lesser extent on the server replay. Warp is always worse at the start of a race so drivers should take extra care. In this case Syd drifted slightly right and although no contact was made he encroached into warp territory. He would have been better to maintain a wide line and thus minimised the risk of warp contact.

Warp Incident

Lap 1 - Turn 1 - John Roberts and Derek Howe

The flying Lotus of Allan Davis is four cars ahead of John but five cars ahead of Derek. Since John can see the Lotus he manages to slow down and avoids rear ending Clive and Galiesch. Unfortunately Derek can't see the melee and doesn't realize that John Roberts has almost stopped in the middle of the track until it is too late. Consequently Derek rear ends John and they are both out of the race. Rik Briant was similarly caught out but thankfully the incident wasn't terminal and he was able to continue. Derek took reasonable precautions but there was no way he could avoid the carnage.

Moderator's Report

Summary

After qualifying on pole Hristo romped home to take the win and secure a well deserved Master's title. Steady drives from Ken Murray and Jason Daborn earned them second and third places on the podium respectively.

After a tremendous battle with Clive Loynes on lap seven, Kruger Enge's race ended on lap eleven when he made a very minor mistake, clipping the grass on the inside of turn two. Crashing out whilst in fifth place meant Kruger had lost his chance of claiming the championship nevertheless he finished runner up to Hristo, which in his first season of on-line racing, is a fantastic achievement.

With consistent performances over the season, including a win and three second places, Jason Daborn claimed third place in the championship. Well done.

Lap 8 – Turn 5 - Allan Davies and Clive Loynes

Allan looses it in turn five, he clips a tyre which spins him round and he's left stranded on the racing line. Clive is following closely and cannot avoid the stricken Eagle. Unfortunately for Clive the contact ends his race and with it any chance of lifting the title.
