Moderator's Report

Congratulations to Ian Stanley for scoring his second Clubman win, first one of the season. Though its safe to say that Ian's victory charge was helped by a mass disco on lap 1 which eliminated, amongst others, Phil as as strong contender for a win here, Ian's win is certainly well deserved as he had to beat an on-form Bernie and Chris, both of whom had faster chassis underneath them.

Bernie could have easily fought for the win but his first part of race was rather wobbly and he lost too much ground to a very consistant Ian Stanley. Bernie did claim the fastest lap of 1m43.021s but Ian was less than tenth behind.

Michael Turner makes his podium debut after driving a fine race and even holding the fastest lap up until the end of race where Ian and Bernie sped up fighting each other. Michael also claimed the third fastest lap confirming his podium position.

The championship now looks good for Bernie who moves 36 points ahead of Phil and with two races to go, it looks more and more as a two horse battle. However, three more drivers, Chris, Will and Art, stand a mathematical chance for the title but bookies have it all on the two leading drivers.

Next up is Silverstone and a first match ball for Bernie.

Lap 1 - between T2 and T3

Phil Thornton gets the Vaill's Bend slightly wrong and goes wide opening the doors to Ian Stanley's BRM. They get to go through the esses towards the Beagle's Nest side by side and both drivers try and give room to each other however, track in this part is rather tricky and racing line is a bit undefined.

They touch wheels and Phil goes of the track momentarily however, disconnects immediatelly and its difficult to tell how it would end.

Lao 3 - Flat turn

Ian Stanley is approaching Michael Turner's Ferrari which went a bit out of shape through the Climbing corner. Michael did a good thing and went off the racing line in order to recover his speed, which is very commendable, and sort of half expects Ian to pass him much faster. Ian was however very cautious over the hump so they approach the flat turn side by side but Michael is in less favourable position as he is on the far right, taking a right turn. He'a bit far from Ian who can barely see him, even when looking to his right - Ian turns in a bit too soon, obviously unaware of Michael's presence and they touch slightly but both drivers are luckily able to continue.

This is not a major offence as there are mitigating circumstances amongst which is the hump over which Ian had to slow down and therefore to him, it could easily appear that he was going to pass Michael much farther. Also, there was a small element of warp involved.

I will caution this as when in doubt, one should always leave some room to avoid such situations.

Lap 3 - Pete Stenning makes a mistake and flips his Lotus requiring a Shift R but fails to carry out a Stop and Go to compensate.

UKGPL Season 15 Clubmans Cup - Round 8 - Lime Rock Mountain - July 6th

Gentlemen, welcome to the round eight of the championship, see race announcement below.

The heat of the championship battle flies away from the old continent before returning to two home races. Bernie sneaked in ahead of Phil, taking the lead by six points.

Not so far behind, Will and Chris have a good chance to reap the benefits of Brabham chassis which should do rather well on this circuit while Art and Burt will have a free Eagle; not that it matters to Burt but one should be cautious when choosing Eagle on this type of circuit.

Ian Docherty may have another opportunity for a race win as Ferrari chassis, available to him, should prove to be the best racing option for this track.

This is the first Clubman showing in Lime Rock Mountain Course, a Nurburgring-green circuit with Zandvoorty flow in it. There is but one hard braking point and the rest is just you, wheel and the gears most of the time. Be careful with jumps and entering the braking points after the twisty bits - you may well be tempted to get your two wheels of the track at some points but that seems to do more bad than good.

The good news is, there is virtually nothing to hit when going off the circuit (apart from rather forgiving fences) and that means it will require less Shift Rs during offs.

PJ's setups are not overly aggressive and by setting your ramp angles to something you're comfortable with at Zandvoort and adjusting your brake bias to suit your style should make a good base setup to start with.

AAAAgggghhh!!!!!!   Looking good after praccy, second on the grid behind Bernie.  Got too much wheel spin at the start and lost a place to a Ferrari.  Could hear another car next to my Coop, wasn't sure what it was so I took a wide line through T1.  Had the inside line for T2 so no probs.  Turn 3, could still hear the other car so I stayed wide again.  A little bumping wheels and then screen froze!!!!!!  Really gutted I love that track.

First disco this season.  Pity it had to be on one of my favourite tracks Sad.

Got a decent praccy, was suprised Bernie and Phil were faster in the cooper.

Got a decent start of the grid made up one place think 4th i was then, then going downhill to hairpin, 2 cars collide in front of me and then i get a screen freeze!

When i returned to chat channel, Steve, Amagi, Phil and myself all had screen freezes, So I demand a replay of this track again at then end of the season!


Later on with about 7 laps left it said only 3 drivers were on the server! P.S according to the igor server. and thats including the server name!

I would like to correct Burt there , 5 of us finished not 3  all on the lead lap.

And if there is a re-run i wont want to go through that again. bad enough once lol.
And i had 1 shift R but did not stop mr Mod.

May i also point out that there were 6 of us racing on the server after the discoes which is more than 50% of the field?

Yep, freeze up too at T3 on L1.   Sad

Not sure where the car ended up but sorry if it got in anyones way.  The screen froze up but the engine sound was still on and as I was under acceleration at the freeze, it kept on sounding like the engine was increasing RPM to an earsplitting whine, at which point I hit the Off button on the PC as nothing else was responding.  Woke the dog up anyway lol.

Sorry to hear about all the screen freezes but there's nothing in it for you to demand Burt - it will be the decision of the moderator (in consulation with other mods) whether to re-run a race or not. Timing of these freezes as well as the number of drivers unaffected will be taken into consideration.

You will be duly informed of the ruling.

What a lovely.  I leant over and tapped Jim and made the cut sign.  He removed his headphones ‘Jim, we're trying to win a race, not attempting the reconquest of America, leave it out on the plane.’  BOAC transatlantic, lobster, steak and we'd had Mary Poppins replaced by The Carpetbaggers.  The real thing.  All of us clench our fists at birth, so as never to let go of pleasure.  I still had mine.
‘That was subtle.’  Tom in front of me was sore, after claiming he had little to do this season he'd picked up a bruise at a charity party in Paris held by the post-Dadaists and the post-Surrealists.  There'd been a brawl over post-Automatism, he should have expected it, it was traditional.
‘You’re just touchy.  Surrealist pain won't help your nerves.’

Loot had many interests.  He had only one gnome, though.  The lady nearest the aisle introduced herself.  She said she was in insurance.

The pits at Lime Rock were a problem for Bell.   He wasn't used to being part of an exhibition, and having young things groovin’ around while he was working wasn't helping him control the combustion process.  ‘Am I Charlie Chaplin?  Do I look like Walt **** Disney?  I work in a garage.  Because of showers, or rain, or when it ****es down.  Or just for some space to myself.  **** off’
‘It won't rain daddy-o.  Be cool.  Let's Spend Some Time Together.’  Popsies were normally very welcome, though ‘Ruby Tuesday’ had obviously got her cool from American television.  I escorted her away with the promise of a less oily groove later on.
‘Who are these ***** people, they're not race fans.  And they're all dressed in ***** loud colours.’  Loot wasn't keen on America either, he objected to the lack of doors on the toilets and claimed that the place was full of gangster lawyers, but Hill had won the United States Grand Prix in 1963, 1964 and 1965.  He won the Indy 500 in 1966, though Chapman complained that the lap count was wrong, as he would.  But at Watkins Glen in 1966, Clark broke his new H-16 in practice.  We had one old battered spare we gave Lotus, they had to fit it overnight.  Ours failed, theirs got Clark a lap clear.  Bell blamed the chap in the pink suit.  There was a big crowd today though, apparently there was no other sport in Connecticut, so they'd decided to build a top-class circuit.  The mountain section took us into the woods, like Brands.  At least there was something left of the New World.  Not like their usual McDonalds racing, with its certainty of taste.  How was Hill supposed to have sneaked around Indianapolis, perhaps tens of thousands of people had all agreed on it? 

The Soggies had all their drivers but only half of Crash’n’Burn were there, they were outnumbered for once.  Qualifying was good, third row, Ian was on the second row, he got a good start, mine was poor and a Brabham slipped ahead of me.  We got up the hill okay, then- what the hell?  Uniforms, guns even, some irate straight-looking people, some somebody with a big document…. Half the field had to stop and get out.  Burt and Steve were quite cross, Phil just rushed off and I was left to try and deal with them.  We were marched off the track.  It emerged that under a "consent decree" the amount of unmuffled engine noise was limited on a Sunday, and we were all in breach of it.  What happened to the American Dream then?  There were a couple of cops offering whiskey to the drivers, I had to warn them not to, but it still wasn't looking good.  Then I was brought to a captain who seemed weary of it all.  ‘Smart lawyers and enough iron men and you can run or stop anything.  But no-one pays men under my charge to act like crooks and buys me with them.  Want to file?’
‘Life’s too short for me to be filing charges against police officers,’ I said.  He let us go, looking hurt and sad.  Ian won, he was outstanding, champagne for us.  Reed Racing won the $100,000 dollar prize.  Again.  Loot was roused to his most eloquent approval. 
   As night fell I was left at the track just looking up the hill.  Jim came up and stood beside me.  He offered me his sympathy.  ‘Bravo’.

Suprised to get pole, and with no prior race laps here my only real benchmark was Paul Jacksons site . An off line race against  ai saw the Team Soggies Coop getting hammered by the faster chassis so I wasn't really expecting to do any better for the real race.

During qually I get a banker lap and find myself next door to my main contender "Flying Phil"  Thornton ,  Bully Chris is also knocking on the door.

After a quick visit to the pits I persuade my hard working mechanics that going to a more agressive diff setting "might"  just give me an edge out of that final turn and get some much needed extra rpm's down the long straight . Result ! (but at a price I would have to pay for later)   

I haven't had much success starting from pole , to be honest it makes me feel all goose bumps nervous and I get way to twitchy thinking about all those who are about to try (die) and put me in my true place.  ( somewhere's near the back )

Comes the start I get away well but my moment of glory ends to soon at the hairpin as I hit the brakes and find the rear end of the Cooper is travelling quite a lot faster than the front, a legasy of the wild diff choice which I had decided to use .

Braking for this one corner turned out to be quite a problem for the whole race , it felt just like a diesel spill on a roundabout in january , I must have had 5 or 6 "offs" here but fortunately I found the chicken wire fence at the bottom behaved like a giant tennis racket so that each time I clobbered it I got bounced back trackside again .

Meanwhile Chris, IanS and new team mate Mike are having a great time ahead with some close racing , there combined antics allowed me to close up again and I get to join in the fun for a short while before  Mike decides to go all agricultural and changes the race order at one time I go get to go wheel to wheel with Ian BRM (this is more like it )
After a few more spills and thrills I find myself P2 and chasing Ian hard for the lead , on the next to penultimate lap I get within spitting distance and can feel the heat from his exhaust , but going into the hairpin he brakes a little early and I brake a little late , it almost  ends there in tears but somehow I avoid impaling myself on bournes best exhaust pipes and I recover from the spin to finish 2nd gaining flotd on the final circuit.

Not a bad day out for the old man   
     

Footnotes

It took an age to come to terms with Lime rock M , now on my "favourites" list having raced there !

Phil had cruel luck with the disco , I'm sure he will come back fighting at Silver  Roll Eyes

Soggies had a good day out  Grin

Ian drove a belter in the BRM and deserves his win  Cool

Jacko's reports are brilliant reading , better than my old biggles books  Grin

Burt wants a slap! he should stop whinging , its his own fault for joining the cooper comics team !

Deserves a provisional - YAAAAAHHHHOOOOOOOOOO!!

Practice went pretty well....Jack was very accomodating with info on his setup. Spent a few laps learning the track - been a while since I last ran on here and that was in tintops. So very pleased with 4th.
Got a great start, but had to back out a little as it looked like Phil had bogged, and wasn't sure about others around me, still managed to get alongside for T1 though. Backed off a little to make sure I didn't run wide and got back alongside for T2, keeping wide. Same for T3 and then in the downhill slalom we touched. 'Bugger' and a few other choice phrases past through my mind as I tried to keep the front pointing in the direction of travel whilst the rear did it's utmost to overtake - need to check the replay as not sure if I moved over on Phil or not.
Managed to keep it going anyway, then from then on it's all a bit of a blur. I think it went something like - Gained 2nd when Bernie tried to make a shortcut at the hairpin, harried Mike for a bit, had a little wobble, Chris got past me leading up to the jump and started harrying Mike, who caught too much grass in the final turn and went for spin. Chris spent the next few laps with a 2-6 sec. lead before falling foul of the grass as well.
I then had 12(?) laps to hold out...with a 6 sec lead. Every time someone started to get close it seemed they'd have a 'moment' and another name would appear in the chase bunch, catch up a little and they'd have a moment. Bernie got within braking distance, with 2 laps to go, but his braking distance disagreed with what the hairpin considered reasonable, and off he went to try and get that shortcut made again.
I've never been more grateful to see the chequered flag ! Fingers crossed that those nice nice Mods see fit to let the race stand and that my tangle with Phil turns out to be a racing incident Smiley

Yeah me too. Especially since my computer froze long before T1. It froze the night before as I was unable to get out of an outing with mum in the city.  :'(

That's a race report from Bernie's client replay, which means server has not sent to bernie any information about any of you moving an even inch from the grid.

I'm sure server replay will show differently.
