Moderator's Report

Phil takes another great win, this one in a Honda, holding of Ian`s Eagle for three quarters of the race until Ian was finally through. Ian then spun giving the lead back. Phil closes in on Bernie in the standings but announced a no show for the last round which would mean Bernie wins the championship disregardless whether he races or not.

Will Tway had a stunning pace in his Brabham, claimed pole position and lead the race from the start. Unfortunatelly, he lost the engine entering Woodcote so lost a lot of time resetting and making a Stop and Go. Will then caught up with Bernie but couldn`t find way around him quick enough otherwise he would have been able to challenge for a win.

Bernie made a fourth consecutive trip to the podium and ensured entering the last round as a firm favourite for the driver`s title , especially since the only man that could beat him probably won`t be there but I will refrain from congratulating now as we`ve had cases of drivers announced missing the race due to holidays but then showed up and won it :)

Congratulations to Phil, Will and Bernie.

Server replay time: 0h03m44s

Lap 2 - Abbey

Ian Stanley carries more speed out of the Club than Burt and now challenges him going into Abbey. Ian was side by side with Burt. Burt should have been aware of this as it was aparent Ian was faster and disappeared from his mirrors. Nevertheless, Burt tackles Abbey as if he was alone on the circuit, takes a very early turn, as if absolutely oblivious of Ian`s presence and drives into Ian.

This qualifies as a simple side by side contact attracting 1 place penalty for Burt.

Server replay time: 0h03m55s

Lap 2 - Abbey

After his accident with Ian, Burt has to reset and doesn`t make a Stop and Go.

As the preceeding accident was Burt`s fault, he was not entitled to a no fault Shift R.

Server replay time: 0h37m30s

Lap 24

Ian Docherty runs out of fuel half a lap before the finish and has to reset. On his approach to finish line, Ian intends to go for the pitlane but fails to stop before the chequered flag therefore I cannot accept this as a Stop and Go.

It would have been enough to stop en route to pitlane (but before the finish line) and then proceed through the pitlane and finish the race.

UKGPL Season 15 Clubmans Cup - Round 9 - Silverstone - July 20th

Gentlemen, welcome to the round nine of the championship, see race announcement below.

Two last rounds of the championship return to the home soil. Two main title contenders have announced that they will miss at least one round each which will allow others to catch up, making the last round a nail-biter. There is everything to play for in the battle for third.

Silverstone is a place everyone knows all too well so just be cautious not to overdo it on lap 1.

Wish you all good luck.

Well that was pants.  Ended up spinning on Lap 3 from P4, hit a wall and was thrown upside down.  Shift R once everyone had gone past as I didn't want to end up in front of anyone and trash their race too.  Span again when entering the pits to S&G on the pink ice at pit entry.  Totally lost any enthusiasm to push.  Got close to J O'F a bit later on but couldn't seem to get a good drive out of any bends to get a good safe run on a straight to pass then ended up losing the car again in the last turn with about 3 laps to go, so just drove to the finish line.

Provisional well done to Phil.  Some good lap times throughout the field.

Managed a PB in qually to put me second on the grid behind Will's Brab.  Got a good start and held the inside line at Copse but Will was too quick and my chance to snatch the lead had gone.  Will started to build a bit of a gap and I had my hands full trying to keep in front of Ian Docherty.  His Eagle was all over my gearbox right from the start.  Unluckily for Will his engine expired at Woodcote on lap 6 and I inherited the lead with Ian's Eagle still on my tail.

Lap 10 my exit out of Woodcote wasn't too good and I had to take a defensive line into Copse.  Ian swooped round the outside but I managed to get a good enough drive out of the corner to keep the lead into Maggots.  Pretty close there, if I hadn't been moving slightly right there would probably have been some warp contact.

Lap 17 and Ian is really close so I take a defensive line into Copse.  I knew Ian was good on the brakes because he'd almost driven round me a the same corner a few laps earlier.  So I left my braking a little later than usual but too late in fact and I ran wide.  Ian pounced and took me on the inside as we exited Copse.  I pushed hard to try to get back on terms but Ian had the hammer down and I was struggling to keep in touch.  Fortunately for me Ian clipped the inside kerb at Becketts on lap 18 and gifted me the lead.

With 7 laps to go I had a decent lead so I tried to nurse the Honda home.  But Ian was trying hard to make amends and by the start of the last lap he was up behind me again.  It looks like Ian didn't put enough fuel in the Eagle because he started to drop back down the Hangar Straight (I had to put 30 laps of fuel in the Honda to make it last 24 laps).  So with the pressure off I managed to hang on the take the win.

I'll miss the last round because I'm on holiday, so pending moderation I'll end up with 261 points.  Bernie's third place earned him another 26 points.  You seemed to have had a pretty clean race Bernie so I doubt you'll have any worries over the moderating.

So even without going to Oulton, Bernie has 277 points and can't be caught by either me, Bully or Will.  Looks like you're the champ Bernie, congratulations!

REED, MARQUE, LEARN: THE JACK O’FERRALL STORY

Silverstone July 20

…..‘Hi Jack.’  Tom was back to his usual self-satisfied self, damn.
‘Don’t say “Hi” Tom, its just a short step from that to “Hi-de-hi campers” and then we'll all end up in some docile forced humour camp run by pitiless Stalinist lawyers.’
‘You know Jack, you're a crank, has anyone ever told you before?  You'll have to smarten your act up for the cameras though.’
‘Eh?  What cameras?’  I'm sure that Tom saw cameras everywhere he went, that's why he was so rarely out of his tailored suits.
‘The television people want an interview with our drivers after the Lime Rock win, but Ian's been nabbed by Loot to entertain the nobility, so you'll have to do.  Don't tell them anything that might get you in front of a shrink.’  To convey the full smugness of this might be unpleasant.
‘What?  I've got nothing to say- Tom, you have to get me out of this.  I can't be on “Call My Bluff”, I'm crap at guessing and word games.  I even believed you that time I knocked over my letters at Scrabble and you said it meant I'd resigned.’
Even Tom couldn't ignore this heartfelt moaning.  He pointed out that it since it was unlikely that I'd ever have any corners named after me, I could explain about Loot's family motto, as an anecdote.  Burley has an unusual curved entrance, and either Loot had obtained his motto ‘Go Around The Bend’ from ownership of the house, or they'd been drawn together by sheer peculiarity, since the house had previously been owned by African missionaries.  Tom suggested that this would keep them off my past as Feralski, deserter from the Red Air Force.  However, the cameras had already arrived and I had to do it.  Finally I dressed up as a mechanic, clowned around and got through it somehow.  The girl was quite pretty and not too modest, that helped.  I'd almost got away with it when she asked why I wasn't getting suited up.  Apparently for the last segment they wanted me to race a plane round Silverstone.
Tom chose this opportunity for his reappearance ‘They wanted a Spitfire Jack, but I've negotiated them down to a biplane, after all, you're not the top Reed driver.’
‘A biplane is still an aircraft Tom.  I'll take more than a hundred million dollars to make one of Bell's cars as fast an aircraft.’
'You're going to let a nice girl like that down because you can't face losing a race?  You might even gain on the corners, there's a first time for everything.’
So, and only after strongly renewed hints of possible debaucheries, I allowed myself to be persuaded into a three lap race, since the biplane hadn't turned up and it seemed it might have crashed.  I set off in front of a cheering crowd, very knowledgeable these British race fans, when all of a sudden there was a roaring noise and wheels flashed in front of my helmet.  The worst lap was the second, when it flew six inches above my head the entire lap, but it also rolled around a few times during the other laps to wait for me to catch up.  At the end it did an enormous loop before the finish and then swooped down to touch its wheels on the ground and take the flag.  It got tremendous applause and the television girl went off with the pilot.

However, that was not to be the full extent of my humbling that weekend.  Loot had organised a party at the BRDC to celebrate Ian's triumph and in anticipation of his second successive win at Silverstone.  ‘The finest drive I have witnessed since the golden days of Graham Hill, neither foolhardy nor overcautious, gentlemen let us raise our glasses in appreciation.  Finally we have a driver to do justice to the fabulous cars of Gerald Bell, they said his engine was heavy and unreliable, it's not what our American cousins say now.  The other Reed driver, or drivers, whom I also pay, have contributed to the effort, I trust, and may raise their own standards as a consequence.  I give you Ian Stanley.’
I slunk off to a corner, not that anyone was taking much notice.  There was an old BRDC type there, thin, drawn face, with intense eyes, smoking like an active volcano and looking as if he was on the verge of some dramatic tirade.  He eyed me dubiously ‘There you are young laddie,’ he said morosely.  ‘You owe me a drink.’  So even the superannuated felt they could put one over on Jack O’Ferrall, right- ‘Should always be watching the sun, that's what I tell all the new fish.’  Oh hell.  At least he was in a good mood.  ‘Not a bad mademoiselle that.  Kept my attention, not that I was worried.  Up to the age of sixty I thought it was a bone.’
At least I got to hear his final war story, never before in print.  Apparently Wilks and 287 had pulled some contemptible stunt which involved bombing his aerodrome with packets of cigarette cards with pictures of Scottish football players, so the Professor had cooked up a hummer of a Mickey Finn and slipped it into Wilks’s wine.  Unfortunately Wilks had gone a bit funny and on his next escort forced the Nines to drop their cargo on their recording officer Wat Tyler, while he was sitting in the squadron mess.  It had never reached the press, but the codger had to spend the rest of the war filling out movement papers, that's why afterwards the only flying job he could get was with the Special Air Police.  He sighed then grinned.  ‘Still have the old thirst for adventure though, even with one foot in the BRDC.’

I was a little woozy during practice, possibly a combination of Bernie's breath and a touch of whatever the Cooper driver had that made him spend the entire meeting with such a long face, he should have my worries.  His was the only car behind me on the grid though, and that lasted as long as expected.  However, with a few incidents I was up to fifth- until I had a full blackout at Stowe, lucky I had my foot on the brake.  I came to over half-a-minute later and was able to finish the race, I even came sixth.  Ian had stopped earlier so it was back to the old ways for Reed.   Phil won, champagne for him and Crash'n'Burn, though they got a frown from the guest wallah, who reckoned it was too much like a Boche name for a team.  He was mollified to hear that they didn't make themselves little silver cups after each victory.  Tom came over with a Latin primer and a huge smile ‘Loot's seen your television efforts, he wants you to have this.’  It had a short note inscribed on the flap.  Loot.  Motto:  “Double or Quits”.

The outing to visit the Tall Ships in liverpool having been thwarted by inclement weather, the team decided to visit the "Liverpool Arms" to console themselves , after a few dozen helpings of Bishops Finger the Boss gave us the bad news, in spite of our best efforts to release it
The door was jammed solid shut, we would all have to suffer further,  by being locked in the "Arms" for the whole weekend or untill rescue could be accomplished and as no one in the party seemed capable of incoherent speach , let alone making a phone call it seemed it might just be a long wait.

Having been extracated from my cell sometime during Sunday afternoon,  my latish arrival at Silverstone saw me being not exactly in the best of condition to go motor racing.
I found myself sitting somewhere near the back of the grid and was having trouble retching (erm, sorry that's "reaching" ) the gear lever, probably  because of all the king sized brown paper bags the team had kitted me out with for the race .
We had considered trying the latest Japanese import but at the last moment decided my "self imposed"  sore head condition might be worsened by the brightness of the white whale in the reflected sunlight .
Instead I opted for a quiet race in the old and familiar Coop which knew its own way around the silverstone sweeps.
The startline saw me having difficultyseeing the flag as the extra dark welding mask I had opted to use for a visor was limiting my vision somewhat, I could however just about hear the other cars engine notes rise above my banging head as the race started so I used this pointer to flag the start.
The first few laps were tough trying to settle down to my usual steady crawl as I had the over enthusiastic Burt trying to run me down , so had to press on a tad more than was comfortable , no need to worry though as I the cloud of dust and metal bits in my mirror signaled some kind of misdemeanor , so I could now settle down and watch those wild men up front slug it out between themselves. Time passed along with a few other cars who seemed very content to move over onto the grass verges to let me by so that I soon found myself in P4 which became P3 when Will decided he was fed up being on his own out front and I passed him while he was recovering in the pits. my solitude was to be all over in the next few laps as the hard charging Will decided 3rd place was better than 4th and he set about me with no remorse , I did my best to make him "go away" but then started to get too serious about my driving which resulted in a "near death" experience when Will took advantage of my error , after that he was gone into the distance .
Now 4th place in the coop at silver was fine by me and much better than I had hoped for but on the last lap I got white flags waved and soon came upon the almost stationary Ian as he crawled along to a halt and gave me a very lucky podium place which should more or less gaurantee Team Soggies the Clubmans Cup (only if Phil decides not to enter the final round)

Congrats to Phil and Will and comiserations to Ian who really desereved better for his efforts , that was a great battle for the lead between you guys and well worth watching over .

Also well done to my team mates who showed a great improvement , looks like the soggies could have a strong showing next season.

whatever the outcome , for me this has been a great season , I have had more than my fair share of luck and I feel privalaged to be ahead of so many other really good drivers.

i just hope you have all enjoyed the season as much as I did whatever your circumstances at the end.

 Grin

Well done to Phil

Had a good qual session getting 5th spot.

Excellent start, then it all went to pot couldn't seem to get anything right. After going off at Stowe made a try up the inside of Burt into Abbey, not a sensible idea and utmost apologies to Burt.
A lap later the car had enough and tried to join the spectators at Copse. When that failed it rolled over waiting for it's tummy to be tickled.

That was a lot of fun. Whilst in the lead I was thinking...."I should have taken the Honda"...about that time the Brab blew up and instead of hitting reset, I found myself going for the Esc key. Doh. But I realized my mistake before it was too late and reset and took off after Phil and Ian. Figured I might as well get the SnG over ASAP so I stopped on the next lap allowing Bernie to creep by. Took off after him and every time I got close, I would make a mistake. I was floundering hard but eventually his long night caught up to him and I got by.  Wink

Now there was no chance in hell to catch the leaders so I just mossed along until the last lap, I notice Ian going very slow and thought maybe he was talking on the phone or something but the replay shows he was low on petrol and eventually he ran dry.  Sad

I certainly didn't deserve second but a huge GRATS to Phil for yet another C'n'B victory. Grats also to Bernie for a fine performance in the beloved Coop.

As Phil will be missing at the finale and as he says nobody else has a chance at the title....CONGRATULATIONS BERNIE on a fantastic season. It was a pleasure racing you as we had a few great battles.

Maybe I'll try and rejuvenate team Wazza next season.   Grin

Cheers to all and have a great holiday Phil,

Will

Well this was shocking, usually do well at silverstone, was bit down at qualifying, anyway race I thought i pick up some places.

Handling of car wasnt good, I blame iracing for this and not having much track time in gpl.

Gave up in disgust after 5 laps handling was poor and it was pointless carrying on.

Maybe I skip the next race and retire for good.
