Moderator's Report

The maligned East London circuit produced a thrilling race and finish. Lorenzo in the BT7 went off in the lead, leaving an Ickx-Vix finish. The immortal comedy duo of Burt and Bernie is unrivalled amongst active UKGPLers- but I feel that this pair might have more to offer.

There was only one incident reported from this race. I'm not guaranteed to moderate unreported incidents, and I'd dislike to appear arbitrary if I miss something.

Server replay time: 0h00m59s

L1 Potters

Sam overtakes Clive Gardner's Cooper coming into Potters but as a consequence cannot hold the inside line when overtaking Alain's Cooper, and slides into his side.

I've waived the 1 place extra penalty for a Lap 1 incident and also the yellow card points, due to lack of experience with full grids at this level.

Server replay time: 0h01m02s

L1 Potters

Al has slowed more than other drivers because of the incident ahead, so that when Geoff comes into Potters fast he rear-ends him. Geoff might have been able to spot that the track wasn't blocked, but should have anticipated that drivers ahead couldn't count on this and would have slowed. Al's reset is free.

I've waived the 1 place extra Lap 1 penalty and also the yellow card points because of the incident ahead- though only because no yellow flags had yet been shown.

Server replay time: 0h05m54s

L3 S/F straight

Al leaves his pass too late and clips Graham, who is sent spinning off the track. The warp seems to have been after contact.

I've waived the yellow card points because Graham was slightly slow after Beacon- though Al had the space to make a better pass.

Server replay time: 0h13m10s

L9 Rifle Bend

Clive's BT7 is faster than John's Cooper into Rifle and he gets alongside. However he cannot hold the inside line. The ensuing contact is very close to the centre line. Clive takes the sng for his reset.

Server replay time: 0h37m31s

L25 Beacon

Clive must have lost his braking points here and brakes far earlier than usual. While close behind, Alain seems to have the space to avoid him, but doesn't make it.

UKGPL Season 16 - Novices and Amateurs - Race 4 - 65 mod - East London

With three different race winners there is no clear leader in the Amateurs, while Asbjeurn has emerged as the fastest of the Novices.  The selection of East London has been contested, but I hope that we'll have a great race.  It's likely to be run on a combined grid, so the Amateurs should note the slightly earlier start time.   The Novices should have an easier time here than Mosport, as there is no armco (or tyres) and very little scenery to crash into- if you avoid the trees at the chicane, that is.

There has been another request for improved aero for the 65s- the RSC thread is here:  http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?t=329607
While some consider the 66 tow excessive, the slower top speeds of the 65s would reduce this problem to a large extent.  Also, the current 65 model isn't that of the original cars as it was impossible to make it work- the crude solution was to increase top speeds 5%.  The 65s with tow might be fantastic racing- and of course the existing 65s would still be an option.

IP address  87.194.135.42

Race date = 21-10-2008
Time = 20:45
Track = East London
Variant = 65F1
Damage Model = INT
Qually time = 30 minutes.
Race length = long (26 laps)

(2) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

The first '65 East London race was over a shorter distance, make sure you have the correct race fuel!

65 Mod

These were the 65 drivers
BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme (Bonnier drove for Walker)
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana (and Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon and Ireland for Parnell)
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  Jim Clark won the 1965 East London Grand Prix from pole in a Lotus.  His qualifying time was 1'27.2.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the most recent 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.

Unfortunately the current 65 mod download does not have default setups.  Default setups for all the cars and tracks that are likely to be used can be downloaded from http://www.neurology-crew.com/gplserver under '65 setups'.  Note that you will have to add enough fuel for the race, whether short or long!

Think there were 21 starters in the combined field at Mexico.

Hope we can all get in.

I think that if you are making changes to the race times then the season list should be updated.  It says 9:00 is the start time and those who do not manage to find these threads are likely to think that that is still the case.

Ok Clive.  You might be right about having to split the grids to get everyone on though, even if neither Bernie or Paul will be there.  Will your server be available?  Also, what difference is there between your server settings and the normal UKGPL settings?  Have you complained in the past that the recommended UKGPL bandwith settings are wrong?  Peter has been dropped from the grid of the last two 3ukgpl races, but made it onto your server.

The practice server has the normal settings.

According to the discussions on this thread.  Clive sets his server to 3/132, 3/84 which is the same as the recommendations on the UKGPL web site here.

Jack, I think you must be referring to Clive's comments earlier in the season when we hadn't settled on 3/132, 3/84.  I seem to remember we had the BW set higher than that at the start of the season, or am I mistaken?

As Phil says, there is no difference at present.  When UKGPL first used iGOR the settings were 3/84, 3/384 which results in every client being able to see every car.  I think that that is excessive but our current broadband connections can do it when all is working properly.  What it does do is show up any flaky client pc's in much the same way as running a race on your pc with 19 AI.

At the time, I was having problems with my pc and as a result disconnected from most of the 66mod trial races that we ran.

I think that 3/84, 3/132 will show five cars ahead and three behind, which seems adequate to me and also keeps the bandwidth requirements at a reasonable level such that all clients have a fighting chance of staying connected.  I think that this is what equates to “fast” on VROC.  When I first started GPL we were only seeing one car behind, as most people were on dialup.  From my modding experiences, must people have trouble keeping track of a single car in their mirrors so three should be enough.  With races at Sarthe coming up soon it will be interesting to see if everyone can play nicely on the long straights.  They usually focus on the one car behind and forget the one that is behind that.  He is usually clobbered into oblivion when the car who has just been passed tries to duck behind the one who has just gone past.

At times of multiple pile ups in the race there can be occasions when only seeing three cars behind can cloak the guy who is trying to miss all the wreckage but then he shouldn't be approaching an incident at such a speed that he is going to add to the problem.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to attend this race. We'll be moving to a new appartment this weekend, and I haven't had the time to tell our ADSL provider about us moving, so that we can bring it with us. Will call them this afternoon, but I don't know if they can fix it on such short notice. If they can, I'm still not sure if I'll get my race rig up and running in time for the race. Not to mention all the practice I've missed because of all the packing. Sad

Edit: I'll definitely not attend this race. Sad The phone line will be closed down in the old place tonight, and won't be opened in the new place untill friday. I still have the computer in the old place - haven't had time to pack it - so I hoped maybe I could sit there tomorrow night and drive, but when the internet connection is gone, there's nothing to do about it.

A trivial problem to one possessed of wondrous powers, accomplished without effort. Far more demanding was the problem of the sky, which might have escaped a mere faultfinder.

The updates for East London seem to have the horizon wrong- the Balue update does away with the famous prospect of the Indian Ocean, while though the Caballero update retains it, it seems to be wrongly oriented, so that Beach Straight is inland, and the s/f straight is on the beach side.

Fortunately the horizon files from the Caballero update can also be used with the Balue update.  By adding six to the numbers of the twelve horizon files the ocean is better located, but the sky is wrong.  However, I have fixed this, if anyone wants a copy of the reoriented files.  I still haven't located a download for John's brake markers though....

Could I be so bold as to make a suggestion.  Just now, and probably there is a perfectly reasonable explanation, 4 of us are sitting on IGOR trying to get on the server to do some last minute tweaks to our setup etc (we cant get in as the password doesn't allow us to enter, but we'll sort that when the guys come into chat before the race).  The 6 guys that are in have run a practice and now are into an int short race.

Could I suggest that only 'practice' sessions are run in the final hour before the race so as to let everyone in to have a last blast before the actual event starts?

I can never find the same thing twice in a row so I thought it was well enough hidden.

I know what you mean Clive, it has caught me out before having been used to the old Yahoo groups for such a long time.  I sometimes log in as a guest, that way it is easy to see what is publicly readable.
