Moderator's Report

Summary

Another dominant win for Rik Briant. Can't do better than a flag to flag victory. Bernie brought home another Lotus in second place with Jack securing a very creditable podium in the comparatively pedestrian BRM.

There were one or two incidents in practice. Practice incidents are not moderated but drivers are expected to drive with the same courtesy and consideration required in a race. If drivers are on a hot lap then there is no need to get out of the way for a faster driver. However drivers on an out lap or aborted lap should make every effort to stay well off the racing line and pull off onto the grass before returning to the pits.

Server replay time: 0h00m59s

Lap 1 - L'Eau Rouge - Sam Blood and James Andrew

Sam and James get very close at L'Eau Rouge and although no actual contact is made warp intervenes and they both spin out.

Warp Incident

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h19m44s

Lap 6 - Malmedy - Michael Turner and Robert Burton

Robert is much faster than Michael through Malmedy and rear ends him.

Robert has a speed advantage but rather than waiting to pick his spot to overtake he makes a clumsy attempt at a pass. Michael was on the racing line and did nothing wrong. Michael is entitled to a no fault shift R.

Server replay time: 0h19m51s

Lap 6 - Malmedy - Michael Turner, Sam Blood and Peter Maestro.

After being rear ended, Michael's stricken Ferrari comes to rest upside down on the racing line. Sam has responded to the yellow flags and slowed down but he still hits the wreckage. Peter is next along and he hits Sam.

Diki Waza is an experienced GPLer and this really showed here. He showed admirable skill and judgement by reacting to the yellow flags and carefully picking his way through the carnage. Sam was no doubt unsighted and would have been better off following Diki's line. Nevertheless Sam and Peter both slowed for the yellow flags and consequently are entitled to no fault shift Rs.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h22m00s

Lap 6 - La Source - Sam Blood and Robert Burton

Sam gets a good drive out of Blanchimont and closes fast on Burt on the approach to La Source. Sam goes for the inside line but Burt is gradually moving over and the gap narrows. Contact is made.

Burt doesn't seem to realize Sam is there and rather than make a clear defensive move to claim the inside line he simply drives straight without any steering input whatsoever. Sam had been reeling Burt in at an alarming rate and there was no need to make a lunge up the inside at the first opportunity. Although Burt drifted across he didn't make an overt attempt to block. As the overtaking driver it was Sam's responsibility to make a clean pass, consequently the responsibility for the incident must lie with him. When contact was made there was still room for two cars, so a clean pass was still possible if not rather difficult. The penalty has been reduced to one place because Burt was not on the normal racing line.

Server replay time: 0h22m15s

Lap 6 - La Source - Robert Burton

After his initial rear ending from Sam, Burt tries to rejoin and ends up colliding with Sam again which punts him back into the hay bales. Burt then attempts a second rejoin, he stays off the racing line but gets in the way of Michael Turner who has run wide. Geoff Heard tries to squeeze through the gap between Burt and Michael but he applies too much throttle and spins colliding with Michael.

Burt was a little hasty in rejoining but he stayed off the racing line and it all got a bit hectic after that. Fortunately everyone was able to continue without major car damage.

Season 16  Clubman's Cup - Round 5 - Spa Francorchamps

The fifth round of the championship is at another high speed circuit, Spa.  The Eagle gets another chance to stretch it's legs.

As was the case at the last round, this is a very high speed track and it is difficult to to avoid slow and stationary cars when approaching at high speed.  So it is particularly important that drivers execute very careful rejoins, keeping well off the racing line until they are fully up to speed.

That's an unfair advantage as you will be fresh as a daisy and us in the UK will have had a full day to deal with so I think you should have a 30 second stop go  Wink

Hi guys I can make tonight, but i may have to sort something out for next few rounds, as work got me doing "ouf of hours", meaning working 2pm - 10pm, and that could be Sunday too, I see what happens.

I am v.upset! I was all ready for the race and put in a practice lap, nothing special but where I wanted to be.  Sat back and watched a few laps from people for 15 minutes.  Joined the race and my wheel is dead! Nothing! Nada! It's done it before once, if I don't use it for several minutes.

Anyway, might as well give up on any sort of result in clubmans, its just been one mess up after another for me so far this season.

I'll have to consider whether its worth continuing to put time in practicing for nothing.

If you enjoy practice then you enjoy racing even more Steve...

Front of the grid were away well, and without any spinners in front I should have done better, but I got Eau Rouge badly wrong when I had a solid second and Bernie- who had dropped behind me after his own problem- caught me and made an easy pass in the Lotus.  Without the error it would have been very close on the last lap, though others made mistakes too and at the finish I was quite happy with third.  That's all the Reed drivers on the Clubmans podium this season- the mechanics have attributed it to the suspension of my literary efforts!

Good to have a solid Clubmans entry and thanks to James at the tail for the last lap pass.  Well done Rik- must be another D1 possible there?

A rather poor effort from me. I arrived on the track rather late and didn't have enough time to get a quali lap in so I was last on the grid. The start went and I procceded to gain a couple of places going into Eau Rouge. Sadly me and a Lotus were a bit too close for comfort and warp intervened and we both spun out as a result. I recovered from last and managed to gain a few places into 7th over the next few laps and was bearing down on Dika Waza's Honda. Ahead of us a Ferrari and a Cooper had a coming together and the Ferrari went straight into my path. The resulting collision made my car spin several times only for Peter to helplessly run into me after me car had gone straight into his path!

I, again, recovered and then began to catch Burt for the rest of the lap and he went defensive into La Source. I braked a tad too late and tapped the back of the Cooper but, again, warp intervened and a massive crash occured. I am sorry Burt as it was my fault. I then drove the rest of the race rather quietly to 6th place although i'll probably get docked a couple places due my collsion with Burt.

Saw you disco on the startline, and thought you'd been booted or something. Felt bad, as I was looking forward to seeing you in my mirrors.
Best get the multimeter onto your power supply and check it for cracked wires or something Steve. These disappointments just will not do....lol. Worth getting it checked out though and repaired if possible/necessary. Cheaper by far than a new wheel.

Didn't seem to be able to settle down to a good rythm in Quals, yet still managed to post a high 25 for 5th spot.

Got away clean in the race, but lost sight of Dave coming down into Eau Rouge, so I backed off a bit and let him thru as he was more 'on line' than myself. Cruised around behind the Bellowing Beast from Bourne for a couple of laps to find out Dave was pulling time on me down the hill, but I was substantially quicker uphill from Stavelot. Til lap 3 when I foolishly put a wheel off on the grass while changing direction for the right of the combination before la Carriere, spinning me off into the fence and depositing me like so much flotsam in the infield and of course, facing the wrong way. And the mongrel wouldn't do a 180!! Hard right lock, bootful of revs and dump the clutch.....all it wanted to do was head straight out and sit mid track infront of oncoming traffic. Brilliant. One 3 point turn later, and with everyone but the milk float gone past. Got going again behind Ben Summers caught and passed him coming up the hill from la Carriere. Then, the first of my altercations with poor Graham Poole. Would have been sick of the sight of my Brab by the end of this race. Graham had spun at la Source, and I warped him as I went past with Ben in hot pursuit.
Lap 5 and running 10th, inched away from a charging Ben just til brain fade happened at Masta.....another lose. This time a no-hit spin with a straight recovery. How Ben missed me I have no idea as he went rattlin' past. Whilst trying to recover the spin and find a gear in the bag that would drive the car forward, I got in Grahams way causing him to spin at Stavelot. Sorry Graham.
Lap 6 and 11th place....deja vu, I'm chasing Ben again. Like bloody groundhog day!! Came apon some carnage at Malmedy, the aftermath of Burt and Mike coming together. Suddenly Spa was like Bourke Street (a very busy road in Melbourne) at peak hour.  Trying to avoid a half-spinning Burt at la Source, I managed to catch Mike's wheel. It threw me in the air with a perfect 180deg spin and pike. Landed on all four and pointing the right way.....back into it.
Lap 7 and sitting 9th, chasing two bloody Coops this time.....Burt and Ben. Burt spins exiting Stavelot and leaves me chasing Ben......again.
Lap 8 chasing Ben down into Eau Rouge and the rear of the car grounded flinging me sideways followed by a meeting with the fence.....and one wheel short. Reset in 10th and got going just ahead of Peter and Graham. Uneventful lap from then on.
Lap 9, served Sn'G for reset and drove a relatively boring last lap for a 10th place finish. Sorry to anyone I tripped up.....and well done to the podium chappies.
Geoff.

had something similar on my first couple of league races and a practice race

Although I haven't properly tested the theory, it seemed to tie up with I had watched others during practice. i.e. changing the live TV to another car or view.

Now, I don't do that and no problems (so far anyway)

cheers

I arrived in the damp cold Ardenne from the heat of Turkey ( did I mention it was 25 C ?) for the Annual festival of speed which is the Grand Prix of Francorchamps.
Having spent the last 12 days pottering around the Agean at 8mph I found it took me a big effort to get back up to GPL speeds once more .

Practise went reasonably well,  with P3 on full tanks I was confident of a good finish even with the pit stop handicap for driving the Lotus . My start was a bit Iffy but I managed a clear run up to and through Eau Rouge mostly due to Ian D giving me the space ( Ta Mate) . I was just about holding my own with Rik in P2 but decided to get my compulsory pit stop out of the way asap so Lap 3 saw me behind Burt who I soon re passed but it then took me until lap 6 to get back in front of JackO aided by his half spin when trying to take an Eau Rouge short cut . On lap 7 Ian D is in sight and I take advantage of his S&G pit stop to bring me back to status quo in P2 .
Couldnt do a thing about the flying Rik as he was out there on his own , maybe on another day I would have challenged harder but I could not get nowhere near my Spa PB of 1m17.5 prolly due to jet lag and to much Sun and Raki ! (did I mention  25deg C ) Good to be back in the fold and nice to see Ben back with us again , looking forwards to Snottyturn cya all there .

I hope you mean temporary retirement Burt.  If you can sort out your Sunday night work commitments are you still going to race?
