Moderator's Report

A lonely race for Sam, despite the added Hondas of Geoff and Pete, who wouldn't normally be considered beginners. Asbjeurn, Norbert and Steve Bird, the more usual competition, all had problems.

Geoff and Pete might be too fast for the Novices in Hondas- though at least they shouldn't improve! Next season the more experienced drivers will be in BT7s or Coopers, perhaps I should have asked them to drop cars this season, it remains an option.

Solid debut by Clutch for third. I also noticed Martin going off at Scirie to avoid Mike after Mike had braked early- well done there.

Drivers seemed to be in the pits for often obscure sngs, and I'm sure Martin perfomed one simply because that car ahead had stopped? I also suspect that Steve Busa owed me one after a collision with a tree, but since he was lapped and it wouldn't affect the results, I'll allow someone else to have done Steve's extra sng, there were enough to go round.

Server replay time: 0h01m30s

L1 Nouveau Monde

Al has an unusual line at the hairpin, perhaps affected by Mike stuck on the polos. Steve Busa rear-ends him, though the contact is slight and Al is able to stay on track.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m56s

L1 approaching Sanson

Steve Bird slides and spins on the grass- though he seems to be pointing in the right direction his rear wheels are still on the grass and when he presses the throttle he rejoins straight into Vlad- he should have braked and waited.

No penalty on Vlad's request, with no other drivers affected. However, drivers should be aware that if they fail to brake and stop when there are following cars, in order to attempt a quick rejoin, they will be penalised under most circumstances.

Server replay time: 0h12m59s

L6 Six-Freres

Norbert's error allows Steve Busa past, but he cuts back in too soon before Norbert has appeared in his mirrors, and in a braking zone. Norbert was well over on his side and only seems to rear-end Steve later because of the earlier contact.

Steve's peculiar recovery distracts the approaching Steve Bird and he ends up in the polos- enough for him to avoid any yellow card points.

  • Steve Busa — Simple side-by-side contact — 1 place lost

Server replay time: 0h19m51s

L9 Nouveau Monde

Steve Busa is on the polos and reverses before Steve Bird is past, there is slight contact but Steve keeps it on the track.

I've classed this as if there was no contact, but drivers should be aware that in a race they are liable to be disqualified if they reverse on track- don't, if there are other cars nearby, you might not be able to spot trailing cars.

  • Steve Busacaution — Inconsiderate Bad Rejoin

Server replay time: 0h21m31s

L9 Paradis

Steve Busa rear-ends Vlad, who was on the inside after passing him and had to slow. Steve was in Vlad's mirrors, so Vlad had the right to come across the track, he had also left room for Steve on the outside.

I've classed this as a simple shunt as Steve struggled with his Lotus all race- Steve if you want to change chassis you have the option, but perhaps you might profit from altering your wheel setup?

  • Steve Busapenalty — Simple Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost

UKGPL Season 16 - Novices and Amateurs - Race 6 - 65 mod - Rouen

The Lotus cars are on top of the Amateurs table at present, and Rouen should allow them an opportunity to extend their lead.  However, after this the only ultra-fast circuit is the last race at Monza.  Should there be enough entries to have two divisions next season the top division will be restructured and there may well be fewer power tracks- and fewer Coopers.  The continued absence of Asbjeurn has allowed Sam to build a lead in the Novices, though I'd hope that the top Ferraris would be back soon, and Steve's BT11 may also offer competition.   I'm not sure what's happened to Karlisss.  Jon has had wheel problems and Tom is also doubtful, though he might be able to return after Xmas.  However, there are also a few new faces, and Geoff has asked to join the slower field.  I'd expect there to be separate grids at Rouen.

There has been another request for improved aero for the 65s- the RSC thread is here:  http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?t=329607
While some consider the 66 tow excessive, the slower top speeds of the 65s would reduce this problem to a large extent.  Also, the current 65 model isn't that of the original cars as it was impossible to make it work- the crude solution was to increase top speeds 5%.  The 65s with tow might be fantastic racing- and of course the existing 65s would still be an option.

65 Mod

These were the 65 drivers
BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme (Bonnier drove for Walker)
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana (and Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon and Ireland for Parnell)
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  The 1965 French Grand Prix was held at the Clermont-Ferrand circuit, the French GP was next held at Rouen in 1968.  I've used Rouen this season because it might be more familiar to beginners, as one of the original tracks.  Next season we'll probably use Clermont- it isn't as hard as it might seem at first.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the most recent 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.

Unfortunately the current 65 mod download does not have default setups.  Default setups for all the cars and tracks that are likely to be used can be downloaded from http://www.neurology-crew.com/gplserver under '65 setups'.  Note that you will have to add enough fuel for the race, whether short or long!

Eh?  Was it just a chance to make yet another oblique beach reference?  East London or Imola might be better options, though you'd still need to make the top gears taller.  Your previous Mexico setup, for hairpins and long straights, might also be good.

I have a Rouen base setup for all the cars if anyone wants one, it just hasn't been transferred to the site.

The tracks I prepared setups for are simpler tracks, which also tend to favour the fast cars.  How about Adelaide or Jarama as a replacement for one of the remaining power circuits next season, after I switch Clermont for Rouen?  Adelaide is a 'could have been' circuit with the modern layout and a 67 atmosphere, while Jarama is almost as historically valid as Mosport.  There's also Vallelunga, though it hasn't got much width.

I'm told, but dunno if its true, that the 65 mod isn't that much sensative to set up changes as the other mods.

So, as long as the gearbox is optimised for Rouen , Zandy would (might) work , the reasoning being a fairly long straight and a mix of high speed / low speed corners,  plus a hairpin and hard braking from high speed into said hairpin  Grin

I could of coarse be completeley out of kilter  Roll Eyes

I'm no expert but I tried my Spa chassis setup at Rouen and it was far too lively for me. Perhaps other mods are more sensitive but the 65s definitely need setting up properly.

Think I used the base Clermont setup and edited that when I tried Rouen in the 65's  Smiley
To be fair I've used that as a base for an awefull lot of tracks though!
Think Mosport is my only scratch built setup, most of my races this season used modified versions of that  Grin

Re tracks: If you pick 'em I'll race them Jack  thumbup1
The only one from your selection I've driven previously is Adelade, but that doesn't bother me.

Looking forward to Rouen as I actually really enjoy the circuit  Cool

I’m finding that setup does make quite a difference to the car. I’m still very new to all this, and at first I really didn’t think it mattered too much, that’s until I tried Nicky’s setup for Watkins. It made a huge difference, corners that I was having problems with suddenly where fine, I could turn the car in where I wanted and the back followed instead of having to fight it.

At Rouen my first attempt at a setup was far too tail happy, I just couldn’t get rid of it either, no matter what I tried. In the end I downloaded a 67 setup and used that as a template. It made the car much easier to drive, and meant that I could get the power down much earlier in the corners. Straight away my lap times drop by 2 seconds.

Like I said before, I’m still very new to GPL, so it could be just me learning the sim, and my perceptions of changes are just really me making driving changes rather than the car behaving differently. But it’s working for me at the moment Smiley

I have posted a zip file here that has a collection of setups by Guru.

http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showthread.php?p=3921125#post3921125

I find them quite friendly Alastair.  Cant match Evil's Cooper yet but in the 2:07s with the BT7.  Yes Evil,  the wide one.

Paul Jackson and Steve Cloyd both have Rouen setups and I expect the latter comes with a lap to look at and feed through the analyser.

As one numpty to another, it is one of the original papy tracks.  It comes on the disc with the sim.

I'm not familiar with the demo and what that has on it but if that is the problem then I would expect to find the download here:-

http://gpltd.bcsims.com/

Trouble is that the "Get track" link just takes you to a place to buy the game that is currently out of stock.  Hmmm....?  Not helpful.

Oh, that reminds me - Does Rouen historic co-exist with the original version or will I have to put the papy version back in?  Smiley

You need a copy of the game to have Rouen available.

If I didn't already have the big box version I'd be tempted by this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GRAND-PRIX-LEGENDS-rare-BIG-box_W0QQitemZ310087216087QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_PC_Video_Games_Video_Games_JS?hash=item310087216087&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1297%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

There is an option with Rouen historic to have the wider pits, use that.  If you use the proper pits you won't be able to join.

Ive added a couple of laps that I have done with the Guru setups, one in the Ferrari and one in the BT11.  I have my doubts about the gearbox strategy in the Ferrari.  The aliens might like it but I think that I prefer the BT11 approach.
