Moderator's Report

A lonely race for Sam, despite the added Hondas of Geoff and Pete, who wouldn't normally be considered beginners. Asbjeurn, Norbert and Steve Bird, the more usual competition, all had problems.

Geoff and Pete might be too fast for the Novices in Hondas- though at least they shouldn't improve! Next season the more experienced drivers will be in BT7s or Coopers, perhaps I should have asked them to drop cars this season, it remains an option.

Solid debut by Clutch for third. I also noticed Martin going off at Scirie to avoid Mike after Mike had braked early- well done there.

Drivers seemed to be in the pits for often obscure sngs, and I'm sure Martin perfomed one simply because that car ahead had stopped? I also suspect that Steve Busa owed me one after a collision with a tree, but since he was lapped and it wouldn't affect the results, I'll allow someone else to have done Steve's extra sng, there were enough to go round.

Server replay time: 0h01m30s

L1 Nouveau Monde

Al has an unusual line at the hairpin, perhaps affected by Mike stuck on the polos. Steve Busa rear-ends him, though the contact is slight and Al is able to stay on track.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m56s

L1 approaching Sanson

Steve Bird slides and spins on the grass- though he seems to be pointing in the right direction his rear wheels are still on the grass and when he presses the throttle he rejoins straight into Vlad- he should have braked and waited.

No penalty on Vlad's request, with no other drivers affected. However, drivers should be aware that if they fail to brake and stop when there are following cars, in order to attempt a quick rejoin, they will be penalised under most circumstances.

Server replay time: 0h12m59s

L6 Six-Freres

Norbert's error allows Steve Busa past, but he cuts back in too soon before Norbert has appeared in his mirrors, and in a braking zone. Norbert was well over on his side and only seems to rear-end Steve later because of the earlier contact.

Steve's peculiar recovery distracts the approaching Steve Bird and he ends up in the polos- enough for him to avoid any yellow card points.

  • Steve Busa — Simple side-by-side contact — 1 place lost

Server replay time: 0h19m51s

L9 Nouveau Monde

Steve Busa is on the polos and reverses before Steve Bird is past, there is slight contact but Steve keeps it on the track.

I've classed this as if there was no contact, but drivers should be aware that in a race they are liable to be disqualified if they reverse on track- don't, if there are other cars nearby, you might not be able to spot trailing cars.

  • Steve Busacaution — Inconsiderate Bad Rejoin

Server replay time: 0h21m31s

L9 Paradis

Steve Busa rear-ends Vlad, who was on the inside after passing him and had to slow. Steve was in Vlad's mirrors, so Vlad had the right to come across the track, he had also left room for Steve on the outside.

I've classed this as a simple shunt as Steve struggled with his Lotus all race- Steve if you want to change chassis you have the option, but perhaps you might profit from altering your wheel setup?

  • Steve Busapenalty — Simple Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost

I qualified 5th with a PB and made a place at the start then threw it away at the bottom of the hill by catching the polos.

Made a few places then got on to the back of norbert for a few laps. I was quicker than him down the hill and caught him there but my honda didn't have the guts to pass him on the climb or the straight. One time he got off the track and I had to lift and turn to avoid him coming back on. As is customary that scared me into a spin and I lost sight of him.

The rest of the race was quiet apart from getting passed by the other Honda towards the end when I had another go at the polos.

Good fun at a great track. Great to some more new faces.

Replay and reports here.

It was refreshing to taste the champagne again at Rouen after a few lacklustre performances. Quali went rather well but I really had to go for it to beat Asbjeurn for Pole. My start was reasonable and had to fight off a hard charging Ferrari of Asbjeurn for a couple of laps but he had a few issues of his own which left me to drive my own race. No major mistakes on my part, even if I selected the wrong gear occasionally which over revved the engine but the 65 engines tend to be bulletproof. (If only the H16 could be the same laugh)

Full congrats to all the Novices who each drove superb races; I look forward to Silverstone.

Congrats to Sam and the other podium finishers...
Started last and finished last so sounds strange but I had a great race. Had a really consistent race and my times are slowly coming down, feel I am beginning to make progress - only got lapped once by the leaders as opposed to four times a while back...  The new PC (old one finally died) gave me a perfect online connection so no more computer excuses  Wink
Only three things of note;
1) Someone took a spin in front of me early on and couldn't avoid them. Carried on but my revs wouldn't go above 6,000 so pulled over and did a Shift/R. Take it this doesn't carry a stop and go?
2) Steve (Busa) took a spin in front of me so decided had no choice but to overtake then let him past when he was up to speed (he was faster). Had a coming together when I got past - guess one of those things...
3) 3 laps from the end my screen faded - could hear the car crashing and was about to hit ESC (in case I was on track) when screen came back on. Was on bank so re-entered race and got to the finish. Think it's because my monitor isn't too compatible with PC (something to do with VGA monitor -DVI input). When I get the cash will get a new one.
Anyway see you all at the next one - and thanks to Mike for hosting...

First race in GPl !
Really enjoyed it
Pleased to hear that Martin Cheesy

Quote
a few laps from the end, seemed to get stuck on the tyres at the hairpin and retired!
Would shift R have helped me there? Is there anyway to get off!?
In the Novices you can do a shift R to reset the car.  The general rules governing shift R's are published here and the specific rules for the Novices are published here.

V V,
1) I think that was me, over driving the car and a badly timed touch of lag had me spin on the exit of Sanson.  I ended up across the track so probably little you could have done to avoid me.  I'll put it in the incident report, so the mod will look at it.

3) Check you have no power save functions enabled on your monitor.  I have had, and have heard of many others getting a black screen only to find the screen saver was trying to cut in.  Just a thought.

I was having some problems with my home phone line and incoming calls, not affecting the internet but was busy trying to get that sorted which left me joining late with about 3 or 4 minutes to go.  When I got on track, pribluda was corrupt so had to leave and join again to ensure it was ok for the race.  Had about a minute left to just check everything was ok but not enough to put a lap in, so ended up at the back of the grid.

Due mostly to peoples misfortune I recovered back to 7th so could have been worse.  Grats to Sam and the podium and a good drive from all others that finished.  Nice to see some more new names.

At last a clean race for me, I’m so happy that I didn’t get involved in anything silly.

Quite a quiet race for me, qualifying went as well as it could off, I pretty much matched my best times and there was no way I could have been faster than the guys in front. I was quite happy with my position. My ADSL dropped out with 5 minutes to go, so I had to quickly reset it and get back online fast. I made it and the server remembered my times.

Thankfully my race was quite quiet, the start was good, there is a Honda with rockets attached, it shot past quite a few of us. Must practice my starts, as he got quite a good advantage. After that I was pretty much by myself, I was following Clutch, who was very slowly pulling away from me, and I was being followed by someone who I was slowly pulling away from. My only real moment came on lap 6 when Asbjeurn Tverberg first pitted, he said he was pitting, and I was busy reading what he said rather than driving my car Smiley Silly me. I learnt my lesson next time. The only other thing I remember is a lap later when Asbjeurn Tverberg was flying, he got me easily on the pit straight, but braked too late and off line into the first corner and lost it. That scared me a bit, to see a Ferrari go flying across just in front of me. Due to some people in front having a few problems I ended up 4th, which I was pleased with, and certainly more than I expected.

Silverstone next for us all, and it’s the one track that I’ve tried which I just can’t get right. We all have our less well liked tracks, and I think mines Silverstone. I will get down to some practice and see if I can get a flow going.

Well done to Same, Geoff and Clutch, some great racing was had last night, and it’s great to see some new faces, wish they were slower Smiley

 Grin Grin Grin
First of all big hand to Hristo on outstanding pole and win of the race !!
Definitely class of his own .
Congratulation to Natan on 2nd  and Tim on 3rd.
As I havnt saved replay ( as usual forgotten ) I am not sure who went out on 5th place , but guess it must had have been John . Unlucky one coz fighting for 2nd I think.

And of course congratulations goes to podium ones of Novices race and to all driver taken part at Rouen .

Well , qualy was pretty  thrilling to me , very close between 2nd down to 5th .
As for the race  , I was focused to save 4th , still knowing I`m too slow under race conditions for going any higher . After John was hidden by bad luck  , I could dream of podium for a couple of seconds .
But Tim  makes me realized very soon ; that he`s much faster . and after two laps of protecting , he cached me up and went away. Very well done !
Well , in the end I managed a lucky 4th I`m extreme pleases with .

Thx all for an nice race
See ya al at silver

Regards

Well, what can I say. Sam drove a cracker of a race and soundly spanked us all. My Quals were less than satisfactory with a bit of traffic about. But, when I had clear track.....I'd spin it or do something else stupid to screw the pooch. Qualified 7th over a second and a half shy of my best at Rouen.

Got a fair start, just too much wheelspin to get a feal flyer. Held it all together on lap 1, avoiding the spinners at the hairpin, to find myself 3rd at the start of lap 3 after Clutch missed his braking mark into Sciere and allowed me to slip thru. Grin

Sam and Asbjeurn had bolted in front so I got my head down and tried to run some fast laps hoping to apply some pressure and force a mistake. I could hear and see Clutchs' Brabham near behind at the slow corners, so i had to be consistent with no major mistakes. I was chasing a surprisingly inconsistent Asbjeurn, and catching him a few tenths at a time, when I then inherited 2nd from him around lap5 as he stopped a little up the hill from Nouveau Monde. 5 laps of fuel only, I believe was the problem.   Undecided

From then on it was just a matter of driving smooth and driving the pitboard, maintaining a gap over Clutch or pushing again when he got a bit close.
All the backmarkers we lapped were brilliant, moving over well in advance and not retarding anybody's progress at all. Thanks guys, well done.  balloon
Clutch eased the pressure on me by having a little spin about lap15......from then on it was a cruise to the finish.  Grin

I always heed the JM Fangio advice, that races should be won at the slowest possible speed. Really enjoyed this race the car was a treat to drive and the company excellent.
Congrat's Sam on another win, and is that a podium in your 1st drive back in GPL Clutch?..Smiley Excellent work mate. Welcome to all the newcomers, hope you enjoy racing with us at UKGPL.
Geoff.

I think that may have been me Alistair. No rockets attached here.........honest! Grin
I raced GP250's for many years.....I learned a bit about starts in that time, still didn't get many right though........lol
Check out my start from the cockpit view in the replay, and burn out a few old clutches practicing. It's worth the time spent. cheers mate

Not sure what the other Honda did at the start but it could have been me as I made a place right away before stopping to taste the polos at the chicane.

I made a place off the line at Spa too.

Standard procedure is hold the brake on, give the engine an opponent scaring rev, hold the clutch button in, drop it in first, when the flag goes up get off the brake, (unless at Spa where you'll roll) get the revs up, then as soon as the starter's arm twitches let go of the clutch button and control any ensuing slide and wheelspin.

Thanks to Mike for hosting.  The results are missing Martin for some unknown reason, hopefully it can be put right, in the meantime the Novices should make any race reports.

Vlad, if your car was badly damaged after an unavoidable collision with a car out of control you are entitled to a free reset, and if you suspect you are you should always omit the stop-and-go.

Well that was my first 'proper' race online. Really enjoyed it and to get a 3rd was amazing, it can only go downhill from now on. I was driving within myself to an extent but stayed close to Geoff65 in 2nd for most of the race. We were within 1 to 3 seconds of each other for most of the race and kept pushing each other on. I kept trying to put Geoff's Honda under pressure by closing in, and at times i could see him getting a bit loose, but then he'd push and i'd get loose trying to close the gap to 1 second again. However, i cracked first by grabbing a gearbox full of Neutrals on the first left hander of the lap, around 4 laps from the end. This gave Geoff a cushion, so i backed off for 3rd after that.

I have never continually raced anythihing near to a 40minute race in GPL before. I am not exagerting, but that is the hardest thing i have done in GPL after owning it for 10months. To match Geoff's lap times and know that i couldn't make a single error whilst trying to stay on his tail for 14+ laps took a lot of concentration. The set up i had to do that, was quite a twitchy one, so it made for an entertaining race.

Backmarkers.. well done. Everyone got out of the way, and i was particularly impressed with one i guy i caught at the hairpin. I feared the worst as i braked down into the apex, but the guy gave me plently of room and pulled right over.

As i'm guessing this was a lucky start, i'm sure i'll be bringing up the rear next time.

Good fun
