Moderator's Report

Although Monaco could never be assumed to be "incident free" it seems that once again most injuries were self inflicted during this Division 1 race and there are no calls for moderating.

Qualification put the usual suspects at the front of the grid ( plus one interloper in a Honda who got there by mistake) and it looked like there might be a 4 way battle developing between Iestyn, Hristo, Jon and Lorenzo for the podium places.
Unfortunately a couple of discos and the warm embrace of the armco gradually reduced the field leaving Hristo to cruise home and lap the field.
Iestyn's Ferrari was a brave choice, given the pit stop penalty and only a mistake at the chicane prevented a higher finish.
The gate crasher in the Honda limped over the line to steal a very fortunate 2nd step of the podium. Phil proved that his points at Kyalami were no fluke by bringing his car home in 3rd spot.
Congatulations to all those who completed the full race distance, always a triumph at Monaco and cause for personal celebrations.

Haha yeah, be careful all darn race  Shocked!

I'll try and make Monaco. But I just did a 50% pro race recently in oAo,
And it was one long slog - 72 minutes! Was harder than full races at other tracks!

I'd protest for a lower lap count....
But it seems a lot of young'uns just don't really do that anymore...  Huh

Anyway. Ultimate challenge of GPL to do a race at Monaco; all race, flat out - for sure  Embarrassed

Another lap 1 engine explosion! This time the damn thing let go before the first corner  Angry. Either it's my driving style or awful luck but hopefully, just maybe, i'll get a finish at Solitude.

Solitude? MOAR! (lol)

Lol - after all my postulating on the race distance, it turned out to be very fun indeed!
I think the pit stop situation led to me focusing more on speed and I pushed more  Tongue

But Grr, Engine blow at the chicane.... after setting a PB on lap 7  Shocked

Better luck next time  Cheesy

That boring until lap xx when Phil began closing in . I decided to let him by and give myself a rest,  but a few laps llater and  Phil thought better of the move and graciously handed me the place back , but I ain't stupid , no way was I going to show him the best way around the Monaco streets, so I fainted a move up the casino steps and let him get back in front again . This was much better,  playing "follow my leader" is definatley the way to go racing here. I was soon brought back to earth at Pit Stop time , Enzo wanted to know what the heck was I doing letting the leaders get away and to get back out and race properly , no pussyfooting allowed , right!

So began a mighty Ferrari domination battle as Phil pitted on the next lap and I passed him on the pits straight to resume my rightful place in front  Grin but Phil had other Ideas about who was quickest of the "also rans" Over the next 20 laps or so we traded places like a pair of middleweights at the Olympics until 4 to go when  I got a twitch at the chicane and ended the race with GPL's finest  impersination of poor old Lorenzo Bandini .

Great race Phil well deserved and glad you got it to the podium .  Who said PRO damage was no good ? Well done also to Hiristo and Evil,  all those who finished,  and commiserations to them that didn't .

My Brab must have been modified with tank armor. I crashed at least 3 times without any damage. She was like an old Timex....she took a licking and kept on ticking.  Wink

An all around very poor race for me. Only good thing was I finished. Grats to H, Evil and PHIL.....way to represent team C'n'B. Well done.

Yep, I really enjoyed that one Bernie.  Close racing the whole way, there wasn't much chance to overtake without a mistake by the leader which happened several times to both of us LOL.  I was gearing up for a dive up the inside at Tabac when you lost it and I nearly collected you Shocked

Podium was a bonus due in no small part to a few mechanical gremlins affecting the faster drivers.  Don't get the chance to taste the Div 1 champagne too often so I'm savouring it Grin.  PRO rules certainly gives the slower drivers a chance of glory.

Long live PRO rules! thumbup1 I saw the collision at the chicane with 4 to go..
Didn't see that you'd been having a mighty battle up to that point though  Tongue!

Hmm, what's going on with JB being shown in a 65 BRM  detective

My retirement reason can be changed to engine also if stuff like that is easily edited sorcerer

Perhaps disco as in gremlins disco dancing inside your engine, lol. Yeah, beats me about JB's car of choice, don't want to think if he actually has used a 67 one instead.

The start was interesting as JB took it to the pitlane and I didn't want to risk anything so I just opened up the door at T1. He set off into the distance chasing Iestyn but it seemed too risky thing to do for me so I took it easy. Soon enough JB went wide into T2 and what happened to him after that I don't know. In the meantime Iestyn was on fire and was pulling away 1 and sometimes even 2 seconds per lap which I couldn't give an answer to.
I admit I was a bit worried at that time because I had no idea how long the Ferrari pitstop is and if Iestyn's lead would be enough to compensate that and remain in 1st place. Even if not, with the difference in pace we had it'd have been difficult to keep him behind if I was to take the lead after his pitstop.
Regardless of my worries neither of that happened as his engine (sry, his disco) took him out of contention and I was left alone (and miserable) in the lead. You just have to see the Fastest Lap chart and the time at which Iestyn and myself set our own best laps to figure it out - it'd been nearly impossible for me to win this race.
Regarding backmarkers I might've been a bit harsh in post-race chat, but I didn't mean it as an accusation or as disrespect to fellow drivers. Nobody did anything wrong intentionally but I was merely expressing my point of view about people trying to let a leader by as soon as they seem him in their mirrors and trying to do so by changing lines or braking, which half of the time comes as a surprise and puts both drivers in risk. It's really more natural if the leading driver has to make a pass rather than rely on the backmarker to move to the side. A lift up on exit would be more than enough IMO and if it takes a corner or two until a safe place is reached, so be it. I sometimes feel drivers are afraid I'd wreck them or something, there's no such thing, I'd adjust my speed according to theirs if need be.
Anyway, I really wanted to lap Clive in the end (ok, just his evil side) and he went up a gear responding to the challenge but as he said some mistake on his part put an end to that challenge.
Grats to him and Phil for making the podium and also Bernie who in my opinion if others haven't noticed has improved ALOT for over a season and I think more is to come. Typical Monaco all in all.

I almost went for the Cooper for this race as I have a very stable and relatively quick setup for Monaco, but I had expected there to be the usual Cooperfest in operation so I thought I would set myself the challenge of getting a Honda to the end of the race intact.

Given the list of talent that turned up in BRM's and Iestyn's flying Fez I was not expecting anything other than a lower grid slot. Will's Fez seemed to be the one to target during Qually and I we swapped grid position a few times until I got a clear lap and got a low 1:28 which momentarily put me in 2nd spot behind Hristo.
I did not expect it to last, and it didn't! Iestyn pushed his Fez up to pole and JB and Lorenzo were only tenths away from my time so I expected to be demoted any second.
But, I held onto 3rd spot and now had a problem.
I knew that the Honda was really slow on cold tyres for the first 3 laps and after that they would burst into flames if pushed but there were two aliens right behind me. John was very considerate and jumped me at the start removing 50% of my worries. I manged to drive a defensive line for the first two laps and hold Lorenzo at bay and just about keep Hristo in sight.
Lap 3 I upped the pace and gained a breathing space from Lorenzo's BRM, which promptly vanished!!  Not sure what happened but that could have been a close battle.

Iestyn was pulling away with John and Hristo in pursuit, I quickly figured that I might just catch Iestyn at the pitstops and maybe just maybe, the chase would prove too much for the BRM engines....but I doubted that!!! more likely that the Honda would give up first!!

Then John vanished from the Prib display, I caught the occasional glimpse of Hristo for a few laps then he pulled out of site.

I did my SnG when I was in clear air and managed to pull out of the pits without losing a place or blowing the engine...a feat in itself!!

A few laps later Iestyn was sat having afternoon tea in the pits, as I swept majestically past into 2nd place... now if only Hristo had a pit stop this could get interesting. Roll Eyes

Iestyn seemed to be anchored in the pits for a long time and I was safely in front but still with half the race to go, so there was time for Iestyn to catch me in his Fez. But, it seems that he had problems and first dropped further behind and then left the listing.

I was now in a very comfortable 2nd spot....but it was still a Honda!!! I could see Hristo ( another name check) was now over half a lap ahead and as I thought, he would want to lap me just as much as I did not wish to be lapped. Undecided

Will appeared to be doing a sterling job in my defence and Hristo was behind him for a few laps but eventually  Hristo got free and I had to up my pace.   Big mistake !! as a couple of half spins and clips on the barriers more than halved the gap to Hristo. Once he had me in view it was all a bit one sided and I bowed to the inevitable exiting Tabac to allow him his moment of glory.

2nd big mistake was trying to follow Hristo!! ....  clipped the wall again and managed to re-arrange the steering geometry with about 3 laps to go. The car developed a strong liking for the left hand side of the road and I had to limp around the last few laps, which at least preserved the engine and there was a big enough margin back to Phil ( well done Phil!) to keep my second spot on the podium.

A much better finish than I had expected given the challenge I had set myself. Glad I did not play safe and take the Cooper.  Grin

Grats to all the finishers, to Hristo  ( another name check) for his usual blistering pace and to Phil for his  Div 1 podium.

Dont forget to submit any reports..I don't think I upset anyone ...must be losing my evil touch!!!
