Moderator's Report

Summary

A second win of the season for Sam enabled him to close the gap to Bernie at the top of the table. Bernie minimised the damage with a sound second place and Jack O'Ferrall secured third spot despite being last on lap one after a shunt at Druids.

Server replay time: 0h01m07s

Lap 1 - Druids - Robert Burton, Michael Turner, James Andrew and Jack O'Ferrall

Burt looses it under braking and ends up stationary on the racing line. Michael cannot avoid him. James and Jack get caught up in the melee.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h08m54s

Lap 5 - Surtees - Jack O'Ferrall and Graham Poole

Graham spins and Jack has no chance of avoiding him.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h20m43s

Lap 12 - Hawthorn - Jack O'Ferrall and Asbjeurn Tverberg

Asbjeurn gets a tremendous draft down Pilgrim's Drop and closes up under braking giving Jack the slightest of nudges. Jack takes to the grass but manages to regain control and rejoin the track without loosing much time. Asbjeurn politely holds back and waits for Jack to recover.

It would appear that Asbjeurn was simply caught out by his extra speed due to the slipstream effect. He wasn't going for a pass and intended to stay behind Jack. If drivers are not attempting a pass they should keep a reasonable distance between themselves and the car in front as published in the Recommended Driver Behaviour.

Please note, waiting for a driver to recover is not recommended because this can sometimes perpetuate further incidents (any drivers subsequently arriving on the scene will encounter drivers going slow for no apparent reason which can create confusion and lead to further shunts).

Season 16  Clubman's Cup - Round 8 - Brands Hatch

Brands is a challenging track that can be very rewarding to drive if you get it right.  There are a couple of nasty bumps to look out for, particularly in Dingle Dell and on the exit of the pit lane.  Make sure you have set a decent ride height or you may have trouble bottoming out when you have race fuel on board.

Have a read of the rules regarding racing etiquette and the associated  penalty guidelines.  The Recommended Driver Behaviour page has some great info on how to get the most out of racing on-line with GPL.  Make sure you are aware of the rules for Pit Stops and the penalty guidelines.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:25 p.m (UK London Time = GMT).

If I need to take a shift-r in this race, I will have to do it without taking a stop and go penalty. For some reason the screen freezes once I enter the pitlane, and I don't see where I'm driving. It doesn't get back to normal before I exit the race, so a shift-r would mean that I might as well end the race, if I should follow the rules strictly. I'll just have to take the penalty after the race.

I don't know if anybody else has this problem. I've tried both the standard version and the lite version of the track. It doesn't help.  Undecided

Very odd, I've not come across this problem before.  You don't need to make a pit stop regardless of the chassis you choose so no problems there.  If you do need to do a S&G don't pit and I'll add the necessary time penalty at the end.  Missed S&Gs attract a 15 sec penalty if the reset was because of a contested incident (i.e. an overtaking attempt) and 30 seconds if it was entirely the drivers fault (e.g. engine blow up of crashing without the involvement of anyone else).  However given that you are having technical problems if you do incur any 30 sec time penalties I'll just add 15 seconds instead.

My server (UKGPL_4) is up on IGOR.  I'm hoping to use 1.UKGPL for the race but we may have to use my server.  Please make sure you can connect OK and that the lag is acceptable.

The Brands Hatch I have doesn't seem to like my computer, it keeps hanging GPL! Which one is it we're using?

Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10. Why the hell do I keep crashing then?!

When I had a pit lane freeze there were two solutions, either use the new rasterisers, or revert to earlier video drivers.  It occurred at a few of the addons- Bugatti was another.

We'll be using 1.UKGPL for tonight's race, announcement has been updated.  I'll be racing in the interleague race and I'll have to drop out of praccy to start the server so I won't be available if you have connection problems with the track.  Hopefully everyone who has had problems will have sorted them out by now  whistling

Aha, that may solve my problem. I did change to d3d some time ago for some reason I don't remember now. Will test it during practice tonight. Thanks a lot!

A second Clubmans win  Grin. Quali went rather smoothly, as I managed to get pole by half a second from an ever-improving Steve. The start went well and I held onto the lead into Paddock Hill. About half a lap later, when I noticed Steve going backwards into Hawthorn, it was a matter of keeping the car on the road and not making any mistakes.

The race to the end was rather quiet although I did shunt Graham into the hay bayles when he was recovering from a spin at Paddock Hill, sorry about that but I couldn't miss you. I guess consistency won the race as when I lapped Asbjeurn, he matched my pace with ease and was even closing in on me in the last few laps. Steve also nabbed the fastest lap of the race, beating me by half a second.

Speaking of consistency, Bernie's second place gives him a healthy lead in the Clubmans championship despite having not won a race this season; impressive stuff!

Ably assisted by absent friends Rik and Will , also a big helping hand from my team Mate Burt .

suprising result as I fully expected a much lower placing going on my recent Brands outings , so I drove with caution in an attempt to keep it on the black stuff .
I did stiffen the suspension up a tad to aid driveabilty and in the race I was short shifting to avoid wheel spin.  in spite of this I still did the odd wall of death around the outside of Druids and almost threw it away on two occasions at the Dell.

I past a few errant cars,  but was very lucky to avoid any collisions (probably due to my crawling speed )

All in all a very quiet race and was content to follow Sam home into P2 and raise the points total for the Soggies .

grats to all them what finished and all them that tried hard , not an easy track by any means and a bit daunting for the newbies.

What a giggle that was.  I should have done a lot better than that, but stupid errors ruined my chances.

P2 in qualifying and followed Sam off the grid got a comfortable gap to settle in behind Sam and clock off some laps, until I messed up Hawthorn.  Asbjeurn made his best attempt to avoided me and fortunately held it together when his wheel brushed my car.

Then I made error after error, one one occasion flipping the car at Druids.  A shift R, followed by a s+g.  Then exiting pit lane I didn't want to cause any havoc and was watching carefully for other cars and promptly drove right into one of the white markers at Paddock Hill and beached the car! Shift R again, and another s+g!

All that put me well down so, time to have a play and push the car a bit, nothing to lose really, ended up with the fastest lap!

Well done to all that finished.

Congratulations to Sam on a second Clubmans win, this time without a disconnection problem.  Loot was so effusive he even mentioned my own drive over his cigar and brandies- 'Marvellous.  Ah-ah.. and that blighter O'Ferrall got third, again, though I still fail to comprehend why chaps want to peruse his race reports while there's panelling to stare at... there's more racing insight in well-grained wood..'.  He must be pleased then!

I wish my race deserved better, but I almost span off the grid, and I let Burt past me, so I was among the drivers trapped by his spin at Druids.  Last away from that, I had a chance to get clear of the field but lost grip when I went wide to pass an Eagle and had to start again, then got behind another spinner, a collision and was finally pushed off at Hawthorn- perhaps everyone wanted to convince me that a merger with D1 really wasn't on?  When I made it into third, though the car was okay and I still had more pace, Bernie was 40s ahead.

I enjoyed Brands in the 67s on the dedicated server, it wasn't quite as good on the domestic servers when other drivers had problems, so perhaps we'll have to drop it for the mods for the moment.  It seems to have been a long time since it had been run by ukgpl though, it definitely merits more racing.

The Kyalami result means that it'll be difficult to catch the Soggies for the team championship unless there are some unlikely results, but at least Sam has a chance at the drivers title!
