The Castle Combe airfield opened in May 1941. The land which the airfield occupied belonged to the Castle Combe estate, which was owned by the Gorst family. The airfield functioned for seven years before being decommissioned in 1948.
Castle Combe Circuit opened just 18 months after Silverstone in the summer of 1950, making it one of the longest established circuits in the UK. Over the next few years, the circuit attracted star names such as Stirling Moss, Mike Hawthorn, Roy Salvadori and John Surtees. Until 1999, the circuit followed it's original layout, around the perimeter of the old air base. Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, and David Coulthard all won races in the 70's and 80's, and by the 90's, the circuit hosted rounds of most of the national championships.
In 2005, the circuit was issued with a noise nuisance order, which meant that the circuit had to reduce its noise level. The British Formula Three Championship, British GT Championship and British Touring Car Championship were louder than permitted, and so were prevented from returning. Local championships dedicated to Saloon Cars, GTs and Formula Ford are still active

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

If memory serves me right the last 69 race GB had here was won by that fiendish my Loynes .
I find Quarry the most awkward with the turning the wrong way aproach through the left hand sweep .

I am just glad its the old version without chicanes .

I spent many a Saturday during the late 60's at Castle Coombe, and the place for excitement was always Quarry bend.
Just like in GPL, cars would come screaming over the rise and the left hand kink, only to realise that it was far too late to make it around the right hand section. Although I know this from RL...why the heck do I fall into the same trap?Huh? laugh Huh

Although the GPL circuit is a very good re-creation of Castle Coombe as I remember it, what it does not have is the large ditch in front of the raised grassy bank Roll Eyes. That was there as much to protect the spectators as to trap the impetuous driver.
The chicanes have been put in to bring the speeds down, but I think something has been lost as there is no longer the long straight and demon braking areas of yore. Undecided

Yes, the habitual sterilisation of racetracks....primarily to protect the profits of insurers......not as advertised, for safety reasons. But as you quite rightly say Clive.....they just become closed-loop freeways.

Grats to Lorenzo for a dominant victory, I had no answer to his pace. Had a few spins on my own but was lucky to face the right direction and continue imediatelly.
It was a very intense race overall.
