Moderator's Report

Mike collected the first win for the Clark-Hill Lotus team in the Novices! He followed Jim Rye closely for many laps then inherited the lead after Jim's wheel failed him on Lap 16. Jim Hurtubise was a good second while Nicky, who was involved with NHance in the start pile-up, came back to finish third.

However simple victory was not enough for the Clark-Hill ace. He was determined to complete his parade lap this time, and slowed down to concentrate hard and not miss the pit lane entrance. Unfortunately he still went off onto the grass, and then Jim Hurtubise hit him from behind to push him past (thanks Jim!). Finally Bookie clipped him to spin him round, before he finished his own parade lap by again ghosting through the pit wall. So Mike even claimed the worst pit attempt as well, despite some pretty stiff competition from Bookie and Hezemans.

L1 Start

Nicky made a poor start and Nhance had a flier- and then risked the wrath of the grid with an outside pass aginst the pit wall. As with Bernie at Spa, there was barely enough room and when NHance glanced the barrier it was enough to bring him into contact with Nicky.

Nicky may have seemed to squeeze NHance slightly, however it's not clear that this was intentional.

While the start was ruined for many drivers NHance took an sng for his reset and I'm not going to add any further penalty. If being deprived of your favourite clubhouse drink by an angry mob doesn't deter racers from impractical start passes then a place penalty won't either. Also, there are no current penalties just for grid behaviour, just aggravation of any other deserved penalties. If a penalty was to be effective it would have to be on the passing attempt rather than the result, because lag is an important factor.

If you are stuck behind a driver who has started poorly in a constricted space, you could pull to one side to avoid the car behind, but remain in the leading car's mirrors. Real racers have more more of the vital information you need to make a successful pass off the grid.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h03m07s

Bookie made an sng that was unecessary, which is just as well, because it wasn't carried out near enough the pitwall.

However he also ghosted through the pitwall, which is an automatic disqualification. An inexplicably harsh penalty perhaps, but it has been levied before.

Bookie doesn't even get the consolation of the worst pit attempt, as there were two further 'crowd-pleasers' on the grid. Hezemans effort was even on the same lap.

Server replay time: 0h12m20s

L7 Barbeque

Clutch was showing a lap down because of his pit start, and had allowed Al past on the straight. As he 'unlaps' himself the side-to-side contact is due to warp.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h14m35s

L9 Esses

Fabio braked early at the Esses and Al shunted him.

Server replay time: 0h21m44s

L14 Crowthorne

Nicky may have expected Al to turn earlier and ran into the back of him when he attempted to lap. Both drivers asked that there be no penalty as a consequence.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h27m47s

L18 Crowthorne

Al may have been unsure of his car at Crowthorne and seemed to brake early. Billy ran into him but no penalty was requested.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h28m17s

L18 Barbeque

Billy was very slow approaching Barbeque and Graham couldn't decide whether to take the inside line to pass him. Billy slowed further to allow Graham past but Graham had opted not to, and ran into the back of him.

Server replay time: 0h30m09s

L19 Barbeque

This was an oddity rather than an incident- Fabio seemed to drive through Billy's car after Barbeque..?

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h34m31s

L23 Barbeque

Graham was unable to avoid Fabio, after Fabio lost control.

UKGPL Season 17 - Novices Trophy - Race 3 - 65 mod - Kyalami

The third race of the Novices Trophy is at Kyalami, a circuit which was built in 1961 and first raced by F1 in 1966 following a major upgrade.  The long straight should offer much potential for slipstreaming, but care is need at Crowthorne, especially on lap one, and I'd suggest that drivers ensure that they are familiar with both the inside and outside line there.

The championship has yet to settle down, though I'd expect front-runners to start to emerge after this round and the next one.

Ensure you have the pit wall in place.  The standard papy track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it.  The absence of a pit wall will not stop you joining the race but anybody seen miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will be disqualified.

Please use the updated 65 mod for this race

The 65 mod update has surprised us as it was a low-key announcement, and it isn't available on the 'Legends of 65' home site, where the 65 mod is hosted.  However, the effort put into it certainly merits a season's testing, without which feedback and any further development would be made difficult.

The updated layout features are very welcome, with the ability to record best lap times at addon tracks and to have 65 specific tracks. The new collision boxes are also a great improvement.  Though the new slipstream code will need extensive testing, the preliminary race seemed to show that it would be a definite improvement in racing terms, without the controversy over its extent, as with the 66 mod.

It seems a pity that the opportunity wasn't taken for more extensive changes to the 65 mod, especially as this means that we'll be racing cars that have compensation for the absence of slipstream built into the top speed, yet with slipstream present.  Though it might be a consideration that an update with corrected and slower speeds would then not be useful for rank, as the cars would be slower, rank should always take second place to realism, and the ranks could continue with the original mod.  However, an extensive reworking of the 65 mod might have taken resources that aren't available to the community.  While I'm disappointed because I'm not keen on the concept of patches that make the carsets faster without regard to realism, at least it's still possible that we could still have a 65 mod v3 based on the 66 physics and made incompatible by the addition of extra cars to prevent the unrealistic faster 2.02 mod being used by overcompetitive racers.

Thanks to all involved with producing the update.  If the new slipsteam code works as well as it seems it might, perhaps it could help persuade the authors of the 66 mod to rework their code as well!

BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana (and Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon and Ireland for Parnell)
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast.... the South African Grand Prix was at East London in 1965.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.  The 2.02 update is available here: http://www.jamesonline.net/ukgpl/1965mod_PATCH_v2.0.2_Setup.zip

Hi

I may be missing something, but how / where do i get the pit wall from?

I currently run a Graphically Updated version of Kyalami that doesn't have a pit wall, but even on my 'original version' that i had when i first loaded up GPL off the original disk using the all in one installer at GPLPS there was no Pit wall. I have reinstalled the original version to check and no wall.

I think i remember reading on Igor Chat the other week that someone said you just have to alter one of the files within the Kyalami folder, but i could be wrong??

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be most appreciated  Smiley

Apologies if i've missed something obvious.

Many Thanks

If you have installed the GFX update that removes the pitwall here is how to get it back for the race .

1. Rename or remove kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.

That will give you back a wall you can crash your car into , if you want the old papy Armco GFX back for the wall do this .

2. Rename or remove Armco_s.mip.

because of the higher numbers this season in 65s, drivers with an asterisk are free to race in either Novices or Amaterus but will not get the same chassis allocation in both divisions.

Thanks for the advice Miner2049er!

I've now got a big Armco to the right of the main straight so that should do it for the race. Still no sign of a wall, but the Armco should do. I assume it follows the same markings as the wall? Don't want to be disqualified after all.

I think when i first installed GPL using the all in one installer, i also used a Track Update Installer that was also on the GPL Preservation Society site. I assume this gave Kyalami a slight makeover and removed the wall as i've never seen a wall there before since i've owned the game.

Anyway, thanks again and see you on Track.

For pit wall read Armco.  You shouldn't have any problems with your installation now Wink

Excellent advice it is too!

I have renamed them to get the pit wall to appear but I will now create a folder called Pit Wall in the Kyalami folder an lob them in there along with a readme so that I can remember what to do next time.

Microsoft force feedback wheel faliure meant I had to disconnect from the race on lap 15. cursing cursing

I qualified in P2, after an epic battle for Pole. I cant remember names, but the guy on pole lead and had the legs on me until he had a spin. Then James closed on me fast after a bit of confusion with lapping someone. He was very close and drove really well to hassle me for a number of laps, until he suddenly dropped 4secs.

Anyway, James was real fast and was bringing the gap down slowly and then bang, the microsoft sidewinder wheel was still working, but suddenly i could not brake or accelerate. And it was over... Huh

I would just like to say thankyou to some of the cars that I lapped for moving offline, some people were so nice that they even lifted right off.
