Moderator's Report

Server replay time: 0h01m38s

Tim runs wide onto the grass at Sunset allowing John a legitimate passing opportunity into Clubhouse.
Tim moves back onto the track and is suprised when he hits John side on.

Blatant Side By Side Contact.
Penalty of 2 places plus an extra place for a lap 1 incident.

UKGPL Season 17 - Amateurs Trophy - Race 3 - 65 mod - Kyalami

The third round of the Amateurs Trophy finds us at the South African circuit of Kyalami, first built in 1961 and first raced by F1 in 1966 following a major upgrade. A track of 2 halves the long straight should offer some great slipstreaming opportunities which could end in disaster entering the long and slippery T1 at Crowthorne, especially on lap one. There is a large run off area but that is not an invitation to use it.

Ensure you have the pit wall in place.  The standard papy track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it.  The absence of a pit wall will not stop you joining the race but anybody seen miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will be disqualified.

Instructions for restoring the pit wall are;
If you have installed the GFX update that removes the pitwall here is how to get it back for the race .
1. Rename or remove kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.

That will give you back a wall you can crash your car into. If you want the old papy Armco GFX back do this.
2. Rename or remove Armco_s.mip.

As always I would remind you to take care on Lap 1 especially under braking into Crowthorne and don't forget that this time around we have upped the ante and the Amateurs will race at Pro level with no resets allowed.
Chassis allocations are below- the same chassis will be used for all races this season, unless there is an adjustment agreed by the moderator.  Good luck!

Please use the updated 65 mod for this race.

The 65 mod V2 update is being used by UKGPL and the updated layout features are very welcome, with the ability to record best lap times at addon tracks and to have 65 specific tracks. The new collision boxes are also a great improvement.  Though the new slipstream code will need extensive testing, the preliminary race seemed to show that it would be a definite improvement in racing terms, without the controversy over its extent, as with the 66 mod.

Thanks to all involved with producing the update.  If the new slipsteam code works as well as it seems it might, perhaps it could help persuade the authors of the 66 mod to rework their code as well!

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.

65 Mod

These were the 65 drivers
BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme (Bonnier drove for Walker)
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana (and Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon and Ireland for Parnell)
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  Jim Clark won the 1965 Belgian Grand Prix in a Lotus.  Graham Hill took pole in his BRM P261 with a time of 3'45.4 .  The 1965 distance was 32 laps.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.  The 2.02 update is available here: http://www.jamesonline.net/ukgpl/1965mod_PATCH_v2.0.2_Setup.zip

Might have to give this one a miss, I got booted from the practice server for excessive packet loss. Unless I can find a suitable wire, or move the router closer to the centre of the house, it won't happen. Sad

Go to start this week and I'm stuck in South African wilderness miles from the tarmac. Thats enough GPL "fun" for me. Can you please remove me from "full time" slot please and hope someone has more fun racing than me. Good luck to you all Smiley

A really crap race to be honest. I was off the pace here in Kyalami, qualifying a lowly 15th. I just couldn't find a good rhythm here and it showed. Made a good start, passed a few people but it appeared Mike and Fulvio had a warp assisted coming together at Sunset which resulted in mayhem for the cars behind. I had to brake sharply, coming to a stand still on the racing line and Phil couldn't avoid me. So I ended upside down but at least I was the only casualty. It can only get better next time round.

That's a new one on me - never heard of starting in the middle of nowhere. Sorry to hear you're not having the best luck Ginsters.

Got home from work just in time and managed to tweak my Spa gears by the end of qually. Got round to the tight left hander out the back and I was concentrating on the BRM heading to the apex when BANG - there's a Lotus facing the wrong way right in front. Don't think I had a chance with that. Seemed to cause quite a big crash.

Ho hum, happens to the best of us. Also happens to me.

Grand race for me.  And actually managed to finish this one.  A first for me in Amateurs in season 17.

Got lucky with getting through what seems to be a warp induced crash on L1, then some other spins and prangs.

Had Mike chasing me for a good while around 3 seconds back, until Fulvio managed to get passed him, then Fulvio closed me down.  I let him take an easy pass into T1 as he was a good half second a lap quicker I think, and see if he could drag us along to anyone else up ahead.  Managed to hang on to his slipstream until he had a coming together with Phil which gifted me 5th.

Last couple of laps were a bit of high pressure with Fulvio once again closing in, closely followed by Mike.  If one had caught me I think they would have both got through, but managed to hold on to the flag.

Fun race for me, thanks guys.  Once again thanks for the server and organising etc.

After I had a little problem with a Honda going towards the hairpin on lap one I gave Clive a bump when I pushed the loud pedal and gave his Brabham a bump . The only thing i can say is rejoining and turning onto the track at the hairpin is tricky .

All i can do is say sorry to Clive for doing it .

Average race for me. Quallied quickly with a hi 25, then did a few laps on full fuel to confirm setup was fine.

Got a good launch off the line and held my spot thru Crowthorne on the 1st lap. All was dandy til Fulvio got turned around in Clubhouse. I saw he was high on the line, so I went in low to sneak underneath him....but he was still moving and rolled back into my path. How Fulvio's car survived getting hit by me, Storm, Sam and maybe Phil as well...escapes me. Sam and Storm ended up wheeless and/or upside down. I just stayed tucked against the fence til the excitement stopped. Got going again and chased Fulvio til we caught Dave and then a little later Phil. Dave had a huge lag hit as we were heading round Juksei to Sunset. Was a bit worried when he disappeared, that he might reappear my direct front. Luckily for me, he reappeared behind me it seems after a screen pause.
I then proceeded, from about lap 10 to lap 18, to go to sleep. Couldn't buy a 25 or better and the small group in front ran away. A lonely, boring race until nearly catching Dave to lap on the last lap. Managed an unconvincing 8th, but happy with my drive, and consistency all the same. Grats to the podium, Clive, Clive and Tim for fine performances. On to San Marino!!

ps. Grats to Mike James for a fine win in the Novices.!!

Very pleased with qualifying as I didn't even start on a setup until 20:10  Grin
Looked like I was going to have a comfortable pole for quite some time, then a friend rang me and I had to pull off - Evil promptly took this as his Q to leapfrog me, with Hristo just squeeking infront a few minutes later  cursing

The start went OK, got a good launch a started gaining on Clive and pulling past H's non-drag spec BT7 before backing off early approaching T1. It's from here on everything changed away from easy.
I was Swamped by cars from behind - John got up on my right somewhere in or just after Barbeque bend (T2), I held my half of the track all the way up to the sweeping right hander (sunset) where I made a slight excursion onto the grass on the exit. Only lost a tiny bit of time and assumed John would now be ahead - no sign of him - but I spy a BT11 just behind in my mirrors. Thought this was John as I still hadn't seen anything infront/along side so move back towards the racing line to tackle the hairpin (clubhouse) and Bang! hit something  Shocked My mirrors now show me another BT11 forced off the outside of the corner - realised instantly that this must have been John. My fault totally, thought you were the car behind  Sad

The race was very lonely from here apart from when Clive caught and passed me. Congrats Clives and all finishers thumbup1

That's a shame Ginsters, as you obviously have a talent for GPL.

If you started in the field then someone has screwed up the servers track.ini for Kyalami and didn't check it out before the race.  I always try to run a race with 19 AI so that I can pause it on the grid and look at the world from each car.

The Am's and Novices used the same loose starting grid (Paul Jackson one). I'm extra carefull re checking after the Spa issue...
Also, it should have shown two cars behind this time
