Moderator's Report

Summary

A very open race with several drivers in with a real chance of victory. Sam came out the eventual winner having regained the lead he held in the opening laps. Kevin Clark secured a worthy second place having started in the Pit Lane and despite an incident packed race, Tim still managed to grab the final podium place.

Server replay time: 0h00m49s

Lap 1 - Start Line - Steve Bird and Tim Muttram

Pole sitter Steve gets away well from the line but applies a little too much power and his Ferrari snaps sideways which throws him into Tim's path. Tim can't avoid him and contact is made. Fortunately Steve's car veers off to the left and Tim's to the right, the rest of the field are miraculously unimpeded.

It is incumbent on each driver to make a clean start (see rules on Racing Etiquette, second bullet point). Steve's actions essentially amount to a simple side by side contact since both cars were on a straight and there was some loss of control on Steve's part. Consequently the incident warrants a 1 place penalty and a further 1 place penalty because the incident occurred on the first lap.

Advisory Note: The Ferrari is notoriously difficult to get off the line and is prone to winding up the differential to the extent that the slip is exhausted and the car subsequently snaps sideways. This can be remedied by setting a power side ramp angle of 85 and using 5 or 6 clutches. Whatever settings are used, it is imperative that drivers practice their starts to ensure they know exactly how much throttle can be applied without risking any loss of control.

Server replay time: 0h00m50s

Lap 1 - Start Line - Asbjeurn Tverberg

Like Steve, Asbjeurn applies too much throttle off the line and his Ferrari veers of the track. Fortunately he comes to a halt without taking anyone out.

No penalty is necessary here since no other driver was disadvantaged however the advice given above concerning starts also applies.

Advice - more care at start

Server replay time: 0h02m55s

Lap 2 - Turn 3 - Tim Muttram and Michael Turner

Tim gets a much better drive out of Sear than Michael and achieves a significant degree of overlap as they turn into the next corner. Tim has the inside line but Michael hasn't seen him and moves across. Tim realizes what is happening and takes a very tight line. So tight in fact that he has all 4 wheels on the grass. Nevertheless contact is made and Michael is sent spinning off the circuit. Michael recovers and both cars continue apparently undamaged.

Tim had achieved the necessary overlap to justify his attempt to overtake (> 50%) but not enough to appear in Michael's peripheral vision (< 100%). Ideally Michael should have suspected Tim was along side and left enough room (in the interests of his own self preservation if nothing else). Given that both drivers were aiming for the same piece of tarmac this incident is effectively a contested pass.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h03m48s

Lap 2 - Esses - Kevin Clarke and Steve Bird

Steve Bird blows his engine and is stranded on the racing line. Kevin brakes hard but has no chance of avoiding the stricken Ferrari and contact is made. Kevin looses a wheel but he is entitled to a no fault shift-R.

Racing Incident

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h09m42s

Lap 5 - Esses - James Andrew

James looses it at the Esses and need to make a shift-R but he fails to make a stop and go within 2 laps of the incident.

30 Second time penalty.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h15m33s

Lap 10 - Coram - Phil Thornton and Tim Muttram

Phil Thornton is pushing hard in an effort to keep the hard charging Tim Muttram at bay. Too hard in fact and he clips the grass on the exit of Coram causing his Ferrari to spin. As he glides across the grass he unfortunately hits a join between the straw bales and the banking which induces a nasty bounce and catapults the car back onto the track right in front of Tim's Honda. Contact is made.

Tim had no chance of avoiding Phil's Ferrari and consequently is entitled to a no fault shift-R.

Racing Incident

Server replay time: 0h20m39s

Lap 13 - Bombhole - Michael Turner

Bernie Darwin is trying to fend off Burt and he over cooks it through the Esses and spins his car. Michael is following and despite missing Bernie's practically stationary Cooper by some distance a degree of warp contact is registered. This results in a temporary screen freeze for Michael and he ends up stranded on the banking at the Bombhole.

Michael is entitled to a no-fault shift-R.

Warp incident.

Season 17  Clubman's Cup - Round 3 - Snetterton

In many ways a similar circuit to the last round at Albi but Snetterton has a few more corners and a little more elevation.  Remember if you want to take a chassis faster than the one your championship position dictates then you MUST make the appropriate pit stop.

Please note we are on IGOR for this race and we are using 6.UKGPL - our normal server is needed for the Inter League race.

Also the clocks are going forward in the UK this weekend.

The rules have not changed from last season however all drivers are asked to ensure they are familiar with the rules (both general and division specific) and the penalty guidelines.  Also the Recommended Driver Behaviour page has some great info on how to get the most out of racing on-line with GPL.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m (UK London Time = BST = GMT + 1h).

Race List = IGOR
Server = 6.UKGPL

I had an enjoyable race in the BRM at Snetterton, qualy was ok and then i got a flying start into P3. At one point I was even in second place but as I'd over-cooked it sliding up the inside of a Ferrari who carefully left the door open I gave the place back. Then i settled into P3 until a Honda managed to get by.

then i suffered an engine blowup  Huh(maybe i over-revved it).  dropped to p6, climbed to p5. Suffered another engine faliure  Huh(its gotta be over-revving). Then lost it into the big stopper and blow me but the cable wrenched its way out of me force feedback wheel and even when i plugged it back in, i had no drive!

Still, it was fun while it lasted. Smiley

P.S The division rules state ''No-fault Shift-Rs will not attract a Stop & Go penalty'' is over-revving a non fault shift-r?

Qualied with race fuel and didn't expect to be very competitive, but to my surprise I got P3!

Had Steve in front of me in a Ferrari, Tim in a Honda was on his right, and Sam in his BRM was on my right. Race start went pretty fine, until Steve spun in front of me. Since we both drove Ferrari's, I thought I'd do the same, and just barely avoided hitting Sam. Tim was hit by Steve, so we both stood still waiting for the field to pass, untill we could go on.

Tim disappeared in the distance, while I took a little longer to get up to speed. I managed to fight my way up the field though, and after a while I passed Tim as well, and only Sam on P1 was in front. It took me three more laps to pass him, and 10 long laps was between me and the finish line. But I never got that far. one lap later, while accelerating from the hairpin, my shifter stopped working!  cursing The car was stuck in first gear, and there was nothing more I could do, than log off.

(Turkey Machine told me in iGOR afterwards that I could hit F3 and fix the problem. Next time...)

An eventful race. Pribluda was scrambled (though fine offline) but otherwise everything seemed OK - I've switched back to OpenGL which seems to have cured the screen freezes. I qualified in mid field and and maintained that position until L2 when I had a collision with Tim that dropped me to 12th. Other drivers had obviously been having problems and by L13 I found myself in a train with Burt, Phil and Bernie. Bernie had a spin that I got caught up in and although my car was undamaged, my screen went black for a few seconds as soon as we touched and I ended up on the barrier.. This was not going to be the Soggies night for by L16 I found myself close enough to Burt to have a fine view of his engine exploding! and a few laps later passed Bernie who was struggling with fuel starvation. I managed to finish without further incident crossing the line in 6th which was a reasonable result in the circumstances.

An interesting race. It seemed everyone was having problems during the race apart from myself  angel. I qualified 4th on the grid and found myself in the lead by the first corner; aided by Steve and Tim having a coming together on the first lap. The I had a nice battle with Phil, till he passed me. Then I locked the rears under braking for the hairpin and was lucky not to take anyone out. Then Tim, recovering from his earlier incident, passed me as a result and procceded to catch Phil. Then Phil lost the back end of the car just before Russel and the hapless Tim had nowhere to go.

The resulting crash allowed me to take the lead again. This time, Asbjeurn began to chase me and overtook me eventually. Then he lost drive out of the hairpin - bad luck there. So I resumed the lead and it remained that way till the end of the race. It looked like we might have enjoyed a Reed 1-2 finish but unfortunately Dave fell victim to a Brabham parked on the road. Towards to end of the race, I had to respond to a late charge by Kev but I still managed to be the victor. A nice result then, look forward to the Nordschleife.

It was good to see the 2 up and coming soggies,  Steve and Mike doing so well if only briefly  Smiley Grats on the Pole Steve .

My own race was one to forget , rushed home from the w/e away couldnt decide wich car to take as I hadnt practised so went for the Old faithfull Coop as I have ran 1m 27 's here with the spaghetti special in previous races .

Qually didnt do too well for me so I changed the roll bars for the race in the hope of more corner exit speed but found out too late that the handling was crap on full tanks , so right from the off the car was sliding around everywhere then the tyres began to get overheated (in the coop?) and made the thing even worse .
Prib was useless again giving all kinds of stupid reults (  it was saying Burt was ahead of me }
On top of that, for a great many laps,  my screen seemed to go very dark , I found it impossible to see any cars in front of me  ( because they were all gone  Roll Eyes)
Dont think i want to see the replay , I'm depressed enough already  Undecided

Grats to them that won! and them that had fun !   Grin

Over reving is entirely down to you James.

The 67 cars don't like it much but some are worse than others.  Make sure that you lift off duing gear changes as well.

Unless it was a controller failure I suspect over revving is classed as driver error so would probably attract an SnG  Smiley

Sorry about the contact Micheal, I guessed you hadn't seem me when you started turning in so took to the grass - not far enough on I guess  Embarrassed

That was more of a roller coaster than a race for me!  Grin Amazed I managed 3rd!
Started auspiciously, as I hadn't had as much time to build a setup as usual I earmarked the first 15mins of Practice for finalising my race setup - somehow this gave me second, only about .4 off Steve's time!  Shocked
Removed loads of fuel and set out again but couldn't adjust fast enough to the now empty car's handling. End of Practice saw me within 0.07 of Steve - good work there mate  Cool

The start of the race wasn't quite as planned, got a slight jump on Steve which was probably my undoing - as it put me right in his path when he lost it and span into me - Doh!
Asbjurn, Steve and myself then sat around on the edges of the start straight waiting for the field to go by before continuing on our merry ways.
As I'll put in my report, I'd rather Steve wasn't penalised for his spin if poss - even if it did prevent a runaway win for the Waza'a  Tongue
Rejoined in 11th just infront of Asb and launched off after the pack in full red mist mode, made up 3 places by the start of lap 2 so was flying. Got Dave/Jack/Amagi on the exit of T2 aswell as a big run up the inside of Micheal. As I mentioned above he can't have seen me (I don't appear in his mirrors after the exit of T2 so he may have missed me pulling out) and turned into T3 as usual - I spotted this intime to dive to the grass but touched him (lag? No contact in replay) which span him off with little effect on me - Sorry Mike. I'll submit that too and let Phil decide if I need a slap  ninja
Caught Burt and Burnie on lap 3 - Passed Bernie between Esses and Coram when he went wide, and then got past burt under braking for Esses on lap 4, I then set after James Rye for 3rd.
Made an attempt up his inside into the hairpin but lost the backend staying tight to avoid contact - this dropped me back enough for Burt to reclaim his position from me.
Burt then ran wide on T1 (Riches)the next lap so I went round him - hope I didn't get too close Burt  Smiley
From here it was a slog to catch back up with James again, I got a run on him up the Start/Finish straight at the beginning of lap 9 and out braked him into Riches finally laying claim to 3rd.

Now to concentrate on chasing the leaders hard.
I was deffinatly 'in the Zone' now and Sam's spin on Lap 10 approaching the Hairpin only helped this by gifting me 2nd - Cheers Sam  angel
Sadly Phil lost it in Coram that same lap and Collected me when he bounced back onto the track, Sam Squeeked by us both to lay claim to first  hammer
Thanks to having lots of space behind I was able to perform a Shift R and set off again in a cloud of smoke (Should I have needed an S&G for this Phil? My reading on it was no so didn't perform one Smiley ).
The next lap it was my turn to run foul of Esses, which let Asb through to claim 2nd from me - On rejoining the track I realised my steering was borked so did another Shift R which resulted in my dropping back to 5th. I then tryed to pit for an S&G the next 2 laps in the row before finally making it in on my 3rd attempt (lost 5th in the process too  Roll Eyes)
Rejoined on lap 14 now in 6th.
Allowed the red mist to settle again as was determined to go for gold still. By lap 21 I had caught Jack and was fighting for 3rd, had a wobble into T1 the next lap and hit the wall.
Half span and rejoined just infront of Phil - who took a pop at me on the run towards the hairpin.
I held him off and was left enough space to return to chasing after Jack again unmolested, although I didn't think I had a chance of catching him with only 2 to go. Unluckily for Jack, but lucky for both Phil and I, Jack suffered a wobble into T1 just as I had allowing us both to catch him and then pass him after the Hairpin.
Bad luck Jack  Sad
Congrats to Sam for yet another win, and to K Clark for a well fought 2nd place  thumbup1
Nice fight to the finish Phil Smiley and well done to all the finishers  angel

Also, a big sorry to Bookie for my massive tankslapper after he let me through out of T2 - Scared the bejesus out of me so hope it didn't worry you too much  Grin

Cheesy I know, the pit entrance on Snetterton is not an easy one. You need a few attempts before you finally crash in the armco and need another shift-r and have to take another SnG penalty, crash in the armco in the attempt to take that penalty and need another shift-r, crash in the armco ...

Maybe it's better to just take the time penalty after the race...

Thanks mate.  I really am sorry about that.  I thought the car had hooked up but by looking at the replay it would seem the wheels hadn't quite stopped spinning and as I tried to accelerate more I must have given it too much and it all let go.  Sorry to have affectively ruined yours and contributed to Asbjeurn's poor start too.   Embarrassed

I had a further spin later on and while trying to recover, blew the engine which left me a sitting duck for poor Kevin to come around the esses and meet in right on the racing line.  Sorry to you too Kevin.

Then when I set off after that incident I went passed Kevin as he was gaining speed but wanted to let him get position back as it was really my fault that my car was on track for him to hit, so held it wide and backed off, but ran too wide and beached the car on the bank.  Another reset!

Anyway, I did S&G 1 and the on the way to S&G 2 I span again!   Angry  That spin I think held me up enough so while I was in the pits the leaders came through closely followed by everyone else (as it was only lap 2).  I edged out of pit lane but couldn't get a gap to fit in, so pretty much ended up at the back of the pack 1 lap down.

I picked up a few places as people dropped out and actually got one position back on track too, so a small amount of damage limitation.

So, super qualifying but a very poor race from me.

Sorry again guys.
