Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

A brilliant flag to flag victory for James Rye. James held off a determined challenge from the championship leader Tim Muttram to secure his maiden Clubmans Cup win. Tim kept his championship challenge on course with a feisty drive recovering well from an unforced error in the early stages which dropped him to the back of the field. Phil Thornton grabbed third place on the podium despite several pirouettes on the way.

A very clean race with no reported incidents.

Season 17  Clubman's Cup - Round 7 - Jarama

This is the first time the Clubmans have been to Jarama, if you don't have the track you can get it here.  A non-championship race was run at Jarama in 1967 with a full Grand Prix being held there in the following year.  So it is an authentic track and an appropriate one for the mighty 67 cars.

Tim is beginning to eke out a commanding lead in the championship and already has one hand on the trophy.  Can anyone stop him?

Remember if you want to take a chassis faster than the one your championship position dictates then you MUST make the appropriate pit stop.

Note: Unfortunately 1.UKGPL has gone down again so we'll be using either 5.UKGPL or 4.UKGPL but either way the race will be hosted on VROC.

The rules have not changed from last season however all drivers are asked to ensure they are familiar with the rules (both general and division specific) and the penalty guidelines.  Also the Recommended Driver Behaviour page has some great info on how to get the most out of racing on-line with GPL.

Please be in VROC UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m (UK London Time = BST = GMT + 1h).

Race List = VROC
Server = 4.UKGPL
IP address = 84.70.242.152
Race date = 31-05-2009
Time 9:00 pm (UK London Time = BST = GMT + 1h)
Track = Jarama
Variant = 67F1
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qualifying time = 35 minutes. Don't start until 30 mins left on clock to allow everyone to join.
Race length = Long (27 laps)
Password: see above

CHASSIS RESTRICTIONS
These are based on the drivers position in the championship.  Any driver who chooses to take a chassis faster than their position in the championship dictates, must make a mandatory pit stop as defined below.

I'd like to play but since I downloaded the track a few months ago I can't get my old graphics card to run smoothly all the way around. I drop to 24 fps on the run to turn 3 and again coming down the steep hill half-way around.

I'll have to skip it because I can't imagine how bad it'll be with other cars on track. Tough little circuit though.

Praccy server (4.UKGPL) is up on VROC if anyone is interested.  I intend to leave server on a loop for most of the weekend.

Hmm, on a solo lap I get a solid 36 fps apart from a slight drop to 34 at turn 3.  I wouldn't say my system was state of the art.  I've got a 2.8Ghz P4 with a GeForce 7600GT AGP graphics card.

GPL settings are the "old" OpenGL driver, 1600 x 1200, All Trackside objects, Full Mirror detail and detail bias set at about a quarter (from the left).

I'm using the full version of the track too.  They do a lite version if you're having real trouble.

Yes, when we selected this track at the start of the season the WR times were immature.  This made the pit stop times rather odd.  I admit I haven't rechecked the WR times since I created the pit stop spreadsheet.  So they maybe more realistic now.

I'll check later but what I try to do is publish the spreadsheet at the start of the season and stick with it.  If someone shaves a few 100ths of a WR time mid season I ignore it.  But I agree Jarama is a special case.

Well this is perplexing LOL.  I was expecting the Lotus WR to come down but no:

ChassisWR Season StartWR now
Brabham1:27.1011:27.101
BRM1:26.9671:26.509
Cooper1:26.3351:26.253
Eagle1:26.6301:26.630
Ferrari1:26.3731:26.373
Honda1:26.7881:26.788
Lotus1:26.7511:26.751

Which means the WR for the Cooper and BRM have come down again but the rest are the same!!

I haven't been able to find the actual lap times for the 1967 non-championship F1 race but I do know Jim Clark won it in a Lotus.  So I can't believe that the BRM and Cooper are faster than the Lotus at Jarama.

We'll have to stick with the pit stop times as published.

I doubt people have put serious effort in doing WRs for this track. We raced it in oAo a few seasons ago and I have a high 25 in a Brabham. Lotus won't be much faster but for sure it should be the fastest car still, with Ferrari and Eagle competing for 2nd. Brabham not far behind either.

It's just the nature of the track that gives small differences, but those would matter over a longer run.

Yes that's what we thought when we set the pit stop times at the start of the season.  It didn't seem sensible to use the published WR times which imply the BRM is quicker than the Lotus and consequently BRM drivers would of had to do a pit stop whereas the Lotus drivers wouldn't.

Well that is one unremittingly tedious track.
It has no rhythm, no fast sections, no corners where you feel you really nailed it on the limit and no passing places.

I was ready to jack it in after 8 laps but I stuck with it for some reason.
With about 10 to go I started to amuse myself by seeing whether you could do the whole lap without changing gear (apart from the s/f straight). Yes you can! You can do the whole lap in 2nd and it made virtually no difference to my lap times. 1.36's in one gear and about half throttle just tootling round like I was on an out lap.

With 6 to go James was about 15 secs behind me in track time so I started to slow up even more just to get lapped so I could finish a lap early Smiley He passed me with one to go. Result!!

The stock track I hate the most is Zandvoort. I'd rather do 100 laps in the BRM at Zandy than do another lap of Jarama Smiley

Couldn't make this one as I've spent the weekend at Thruxton BSB  Grin

Wasn't overly excited about doing this track anyway.

Hopefully will get to Mosport for my last of this season.

I had a few enjoyable laps tailgating Jack until L9 when my steering wheel worked loose and I spun off taking about 25 secs to recover. Embarrassed

Jarama is certainly an interesting and challenging track - true, it doesn't have the glorious high speed sweeping curves that Rouen or Monza have (or used to have until Messrs Moneybags and Whiplash took over F1),  but it does have a lot of other features missing from some other tracks - gradients, blind crests, fast chicanes, double apexes. It gets my vote rockon

Very happy to get my first race win at Clubmans.  Grin

Qualifying went well and I matched my best lap on low fuel with a 1:31.5. Then I decided to see what the car would be like with race fuel in and so I went out with 28 laps of fuel on board and went even faster! Prior to this race, I was finding the 67 BRM to be a bit rubbish, but putting the ramp angles to 85/30 meant that I had lots of power oversteer which is how I like it. I dont know what it means, but also increasing the number of clutches seemed to enhance the power oversteer.

I couldn't find a setup online, so I modified the setup for Monaco, shoved all the breaking to the front (57%), which allowed me to go deep into turn1. So I had a little bit of turn in understeer and power oversteer, which is great, but sounds wrong now I write it down.

Off the start I got a lot of wheelspin and was very cautious into T1. Not sure what happened behind me, but at the end of lap 1 I had a very nice lead. I built on my lead until Tim took over 2nd place and every so often he closed the gap. In general, I was taking it easy, going no-where near the rev limit as I have a tendancy to blow the BRM's engine. I was also trying to conserve petrol, I had over-filled my tank because when practicing I found that if I fuelled for 8 laps, the car only managed 7   alien I did have 1 360 degree spin, but otherwise I was much more consistent than normal.

I really like the track, which I would say as I went well. But I found a nice rhythm here and it felt like Monaco and maybe Mosport, which I also like. For those that like exciting corners, you can make up a lot of time after you go under the bridge by taking the next corner in 3rd or 4th rather than 2nd (which sometimes spins you anyway). The criticism that there is no-where to overtake is very valid and I am grateful that we dont have this track in modern F1. Even Hungary has a chance for passing on off the main straight.

Hope I can make the D1 race next weekend, but might have to give it a miss.

Ryeman.
