Moderator's Report

Server replay time: 0

A good race on a difficult circuit with a high attrition rate means that the Championship is going down to the wire, but which Brabham will it be? The BT7 or the BT11?

Geoff's unusual tactics will surely not catch on despite the obvious skill required to spin in such dramatic fashion when on your own and going in a straight line.

Good work Geoff!

fpolicardi starts from the pit lane on the server and is a lap down.

The result has been amended to correct his finishing position.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h00m54s

Geoff somehow manages to spin unaided on the grid and Phil has little or no time to react, and no place to go without risking further incidents.

Racing incident.

Server replay time: 0h01m43s

Steve B_1_rd is slow on the approach to Moss and a braking Phil hits him, sending him into the barriers.

There are yellow flags waving for Steve and for Phil briefly but Steve was slow even accounting for this and Phil did attempt to brake making the contact minimal.

Racing Incident.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h04m58s

Phil and Jethro contest the second part of Moss and make contact, sending Phil off track.

Jethro makes an attempt to pass Phil on the inside of Moss 2 and clearly surprises Phil who does not stay wide, but Jethro has achieved 50% overlap and is entitled to expect a little room. Both drivers are in full control making it a clear contested overtake.

Racing Incident.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h42m43s

Steve Bucket and Steve B_1_rd collide going into turn 8.

Steve B_1_rd takes the inside line on the approach to turn 8 and Steve Bucket knows he is there and is expecting the pass attempt.

Both drivers try to stay on their side of the track and make the corner. Steve B_1_rd's right rear momentarily steps out on the server replay but the reaction of Steve Bucket's car suggests a little warp influence as well. Steve Bucket does not lose a place and at the next corner Steve B_1_rd's race ends in the barrier.

Racing Incident.

UKGPL Season 17 - Amateurs Trophy - Race 8 - Mosport

Round Eiight takes us to Mosport, Ontario in Canada for a nice relaxing drive through the hills. We have Sir Stirling Moss to thank for the tricky Moss section of the track following his win in 1961, but apart from this, unlike many historic motorsport venues, Mosport's track layout has remained mostly unchanged from its original form.

As we approach the end of the season the Amateurs title could still potentially go to any one of 5 or 6 drivers, though some of them would need at least a podium finish here. We hope to see more of the same classy racing we saw at Rouen last time out but perhaps Mosport won't lend itself to that kind of excitement. We shall see.

Drivers should be especially careful on lap 1 as usual but be aware that it could be half a lap into the race before the field becomes compressed at Moss where accidents will stay on track thanks to the Armco on the outside.

Reserve drivers should not join until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left.  However, all drivers should not go on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left.  This helps all drivers join the server successfully.  Please restrict chat to pit messages.

Please use the updated 65 mod for this race.

The 65 mod V2 update is being used by UKGPL and the updated layout features are very welcome, with the ability to record best lap times at addon tracks and to have 65 specific tracks. The new collision boxes are also a great improvement.  Though the new slipstream code will need extensive testing, the preliminary race seemed to show that it would be a definite improvement in racing terms, without the controversy over its extent, as with the 66 mod.

Thanks to all involved with producing the update.  If the new slipsteam code works as well as it seems it might, perhaps it could help persuade the authors of the 66 mod to rework their code as well!

65 Mod

These were the 65 drivers
BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme (Bonnier drove for Walker)
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)

Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  There was no Canadian Grand Prix in 1965.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.  The 2.02 update is available here: http://www.jamesonline.net/ukgpl/1965mod_PATCH_v2.0.2_Setup.zip[/quote]

Err, I'm a tad confused.

Looking at the Amateurs Trophy for Race 7 Hristo was leading and I was 7th.

Looking at the Championship page for this race I'm not even on the list, never mind the chassis allocation

Am I being thicker than usual?

Looks like the Novices allocation and table to me

Another very eventful outing aided by several spins and mistakes on my part. I finished at least, but I had the pace to be on the podium today but I finished a lap down in 5th/6th? Can't remember  Grin. I spent quali reacquainting myself with the 65 BRM and landed somewhere near the rear of the grid. Made an okay start, passed a couple cars but caused Geoff a bit of grief when I missed his slowing Lotus by an inch, but warp reared its ugly head and spun him round anyway. Sorry about that. The rest of the lap was eventful, missing Tim's tripod on the run down to Moss and battling with Bartosz and Jethro, till he pitted.

I found myself battling with John for a short while, till I lost the back end. Then caught up with Bartosz, and had a great battle with him, and with Fulvio nipping at my heels. The car then decided to swap ends suddenly under braking for the Moss corners. It caught me out by surprise and Fulvio just missed me, but Jethro wasn't so lucky and clipped my parked car. He fell for my ambush but I was unable to take advantage and rejoined behind him  Smiley.

The rest of the race was just me driving my own race. From time to time I got bored of the black stuff and decided to investigate the scenery on occasion. I almost managed to flip myself over the Moss kerbs! Certainly gave a bit of a fright. Eventually, the chequered flag was up and I finished not at all pleased with my performance. Look forward to making amends at Silverstone.

I must apologise for that as I'd put my car to the left but saw you cutting across. I eased off and didn't seem to hit you but I think it was a lag tap. Avoiding you was fun though!!!

Did alright in practice, 3rd on the grid. Took to the starting blocks, and jumped the gun. Hit the brakes but it triggered the black flag. Not happy as I'd failed to re-take Neutral and just pulled the clutch in as well, which bogged me down. Lost 2 places I think.

After taking the penalty, I ended up plum last of the runners, so just hoped people fell off and went for it. Wasn't as fast as Hristo, but still managed to overtake people. Phil left a gap early on which I went for at Moss 2 and he didn't expect it. I ended up spinning him round, my car wasn't damaged I think. Apologies to you Phil, wasn't my intention to ram you off the road if it seemed that way.

To finish 3rd was astonishing. Will not be jumping the start next time. Wink
