Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

An imperious drive by Hristo earned him top spot on the podium. Ken once again proved the quicker cars are competitive despite the hefty pit stop penalty, bringing his Lotus home in second place. Fulvio completed the podium in his Cooper.

Server replay time: 0h05m18s

Lap 3 - Abbey - James Rye, Bernie Darwin, Michael Turner and Rick Nauman.

Bernie and James were having a titanic battle, swapping places down the Hangar Straight, and fighting wheel to wheel through Stowe and Club. Neither driver was willing to yield and as they approached Abbey contact was made and they were both sent into a spin. Michael and Rick collided with Bernie’s stationary Cooper. Fortunately all drivers could continue.

Having just tried to out drag Bernie down the straight from Club, James had not yet seen Bernie’s Cooper in his mirrors and consequently could not be sure he had made a clean pass. Bernie was determined to out-brake James but he could still see the BRM and hence should have realized that he had not achieved the necessary 100% overlap at turn-in required to claim the corner outright. This was clearly a contested overtake where neither driver had won the corner and neither was willing to yield. Michael and Rick tried to avoid Bernie’s stricken Cooper but there was nothing they could do to avoid contact.

Lap 30 – Becketts - Donnie Yourth and Jack O’Ferrall

Compared with his own performance on previous laps, Jack brakes very early for this corner. Donnie wasn’t expecting to close the gap so quickly and in an effort to avoid contact drove off the track into the fencing. Donnie could continue but unfortunately his car was damaged and he was off the pace for the rest of the race.

Donnie showed exemplary sportsmanship in taking extreme measures to avoid contact. There was no malicious intend on Jack’s part, he was not trying to “brake test” Donnie.

I "voted" to enter myself in your Jul 5 D1 Silverstone race (and the last race) but the top of this forum topic says that I am not licensed to enter this series.  Will the race password be posted in this thread?

Rick, see the note I've put in the registration thread - you should now see the password prior to the event.

hmmm,

qualified a full half second slower than my pb. Blew 3 engines during qualy, so reverted to the default setup.

safe start to the race behind Phils Ferrari. I was a bit faster and we had a bit of a dice. I got ambitious on braking and rode onto the grass, letting a Brabham by in the process. At least I think it was a Brabham. Anyway, I had a fantastic battle with this dude, side by side down hangar and he forced me to try to pass on the outside. Still, we were side by side up the hill and the Brabham ran wide on the tight right hander and once again I pulled forward.

Now the tight left hander onto the back straight was next and I thought the brabham would ease off the throttle, because even though he had the inside line, I had the momentum and its a sweeper of a corner. Anyways, I eased out a little and left room on the inside, but  we touched and....around we went.

I put this down to a racing accident and started an aggressive string of lappery to catch my team-mate. jack was quick here and going well. I caught him at one point and I wondered to myself 'is my team mate gonna let me by?'. Into T1 and he pulled to the right to block me and I almost creamed into the back of him  Shocked. Then I hesitated as he pulled over to let me by....and spun on acceleration  oops. What a dope I was!

Anyhow, a string of good laps hauled me towards him and this time I was by with no probs, although I had got used to following someone and had some leery oversteery moments as I tried to up the pace. Lap 18 and I'd pulled a big gap on Jack and I think (but not sure) that I was closing on P5 fractionally.

The BRM engine couldnae take any more and let go on me   censored. All my fault for pushing the old girl too hard, she really struggled for pace on this track. Think I need to work on my race-craft as I've had more than my share of contact recently!

Qually didn't go well at all. I know I was second on the grid, but I was in the Lotus. I'd been doing fairly consistent 1:26's in the short practice run I did yesterday but just couldn't get a rythm going today. The last left hander especially was proving difficult and many times I ran on the grass.

In the race I think I may have won the drag race to T1 but I was puzzled to find my look left/right mappings on my wheel buttons weren't working! I kept really tight and I could hear Hristo, but couldn't see him. This situation continued to T2 and I decided to lift and settle in behind, rather than risk contact. I then followed Hristo, quite closely at times, up to my first pitstop. I presume Hristo was just enjoying the fun of the close combat as I was because neither of us had any reason to fight hard. I had those two 15 secs stops to come while H only had a virtual stop and go in the Honda so it was pretty pointless, but fun as I say. I even managed to pull off a pass just before coming in for my first stop, not often I can say that with regard to Hristo, but I did have the advantage of the green and yellow car.

Anyway after that I did have some cars get ahead due to my stops but I was back to second with about 4 or 5 laps to spare. Then I was really chuffed to get the fastest lap of the race and a new PB on the penultimate lap when I posted a 1:26.4. The cure for the troublesome last lefthander was the old adage of slow in fast out. I must try to remember that for the future!!!

Qualifying was awkward, I did my pole lap on my first run and couldn't even get a clean lap in the remainder of the session.

Had a nice battle early on with Ken, after narrowly keeping 1st after the start.. It's not so much I was trying to have fun, it would've been easier to open up a gap, but after the first 3 laps I noticed the oil temperature go way too high for comfort, so I had to begin shortshifting in most places to stay within the safe limit. But even without doing that, Ken was faster and the result would've been similar.

He made a great pass just before his pitstop, initially I thought I'd manage to keep the outside line, but he braked too late and was through.

I wasn't sure if Ken had 1 or 2 stop strategy, so after our pitstops when you began closing up the gap I started thinking how I was going to keep you behind near the end. Luckily you had to pit once more before the end and had to fight with Fulvio, so I just had to reach the finish in one piece.

Monza promises to be an interesting race!

Cheers,

-=Hristo=-

I had a couple of interesting laps following closely behind Bernie and James and was nicely positioned to take advantage of any mishaps. Unfortunately when the inevitable coming together happened I wasn't able to avoid clipping Bernie as I tried to squirrel between the spininning cars and finished up in the middle of the track facing the wrong way. After waiting for everybody to pass it took an age to get the car pointing in the right direction by which time I was about a mile behind the rest of the field with a Pribluda full of red - not very encouraging after only 4 laps Sad.
All I could do then was to make sure I didn't impede the lapping cars and eventually succumbed to another off by which time Bernie had also retired so it was not a good day for the Soggies.

Hoped you would have stayed wide and continued the race ,but as it turned out  you didnt leave enough room to sqeeze through.

The Cooper ( not brabham)  is impressively slow on the long straights of silverstone but good in the twisty bits . I had made a slow start and was trying to drive smoothly until the tyre temps got in the working zone , you seemed to slow a lot for the corner and I thought I could get through easy , but things went a bit pear shaped.

A lap or two later and I got a blank screen which required a quick flick of the mouse button to restore vision,  but too late as the momentary loss of control caused me to dive up the banking, into the armco,  ( I must buy shares in that stuff ) and out of the race .

My own fault for not deploying "end it all" before the race .

Appologies to Mike and Phil who got caught up in my fracas , escp Team mate Mike who was going well in the sister car .

Good response, I imagine Maggotts/Becketts/Chapel.

Bernie probably imagines virtual cones to impose a handicap for himself on the straights. We should be thankful I suppose.  Cheesy
