Moderator's Report

Summary

Congratulations to RogUK on his maiden win in UKGPL, well done. Nicky Ickx, who eventually settled for the runner up spot, pushed him hard. N Hance claimed his first podium in a UKGPL race. A valiant effort but in his enthusiasm to get a good start he was a bit ragged in turn one. He will have to take a bit more care at the start in future otherwise he is likely to pick up a penalty.

Server replay time: 0h00m57s

Lap 1 – Glemseck – N Hance and Bernie Darwin

N Hance accelerates off the line but drifts to the right down the straight, he quickly jinks left when RogUK appears along side. Now firmly on the inside for Glemseck, he leaves his braking until the last second and consequently drifts wide into the path of Bernie who taking a wide line after starting on the right hand side of the grid. Contact is made and Bernie spins out causing a multi-car pile-up.

At the start it is important that all drivers maintain station on their own side of the track until there is a clear opportunity to overtake or a driver is certain there is no other car along side. Running wide on the first corner is asking for trouble.

Norbert Stemmler, Vosblod, Mark Minard and Bernie Darwin are all entitled to no-fault shift-Rs.

Server replay time: 0h12m13s

Lap 4 – Pit Lane – Al Heller

After crashing his car near Café Glemstal, Al Needs a shift-R and he dutifully makes a stop and go at the end of lap 3. However he fails to stop in the stalls.

All S&Gs must be taken within a car’s width of the stalls. This is to ensure the pit lane is not blocked and that all drivers take a similar time for a S&G.

Server replay time: 0h15m05s

Lap 4 – Steinbachsee – Al Heller

Whilst dicing with Norbert, Al crashes his car near Steinbachsee, he needs a shift-R but he fails to make a stop and go within two laps.

Server replay time: 0h15m48s

Lap 4 – Café Glemstal – Peter Maestro

After crashing his car near Café Glemstal, Peter needs a shift-R but he fails to make a stop and go within two laps.

Server replay time: 0h17m37s

Lap 4 – Pit Lane – Vlad Vosblod

After crashing his car near Café Glemstal, Vos needs a shift-R and he makes a stop and go at the end of lap 3. However he fails to stop in the stalls.

All S&Gs must be taken within a car’s width of the stalls. This is to ensure the pit lane is not blocked and that all drivers take a similar time for a S&G.

Server replay time: 0h19m55s

Lap 5 – Schatten – Mark Minard

After crashing his car near Schatten, Mark needs a shift-R but he fails to make a stop and go within two laps.

Season 18 Novices Trophy - Round 2 - Solitude

The opening round at Watkins Glen was a fairly clean race, notably the start which can be prone to incidents because of the awkward camber.  So well done everyone on a good start to the season.  However, there were one or two incidents involving back markers so please read the race report and take note of any advice.

Solitude is a very different track to Watkins Glen, the lap is a lot longer and there are some very tricky bends.  Remember you cannot win the race on the first lap but you can go a long way to loosing it.  The driver who wins is usually the driver who makes the least mistakes.  Remember if you need to do a shift-R then you will have to perform a stop and go in the pit lane unless you are sure it was totally the fault of another driver.

The Solituderennen events and the 11.4 km Solitudering near Stuttgart were named after the nearby Castle Solitude. Motorsports events were held there from 1903 to 1965.  Due to the narrow track, initially mainly motorcycle events were held there until 1956. The track and the pits were widened in early 1957 and sports car racing was staged by the automobile club ADAC.  From 1961 to 1964, non-Championship Formula One Grand Prix races were also held, in addition to previous Formula 2 and Formula Junior events. The last "Grand Prix of Solitude" with F1 cars was held in July 1964, including drivers like Jim Cark, Jack Brabham, Graham Hill, Chris Amon, John Surtees. The 1964 race was won by Jim Clark in the Lotus 33. In 1965 the last "Solituderennen" on the Solitude track was an F2 race, won by Chris Amon.

Reserve drivers should not join the race server until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left - this is to ensure the full-time drivers have had a fair chance to join the server.
No drivers should go out on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left - this helps to ensure all the full time drivers have joined the server successfully before qualifying begins.
Please restrict chat to "pit in" / "pit out"  messages, and at the end of the race avoid chat until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Another poor show from team pie eater , was it just me or did anyone else suffer from "eye stagma"  with all them trees wizzing past . From 3 onwards me eyes went all bleary and I cant blame the Jamesons this time as the bottle was emptied at the w/e .

Pracky performance = 1 lap , had 3 or 4 outlaps which ended in desaster so decided to make drastic changes to the car set up (big mistake )

Race start was marred by the T1 melee (was I the cause ?) if so apologies to all.

Dunno how, but I managed to keep going to the flag, despite what seemed more like the thousand lakes rally than a motor race.

BTW

There was way to much chat at the end of qualifying , people were still out on track trying to improve and you lot were gassing away like the it was the womens union .

Very offputting and strictly against the rules  Sad

Well done Rog, Nicky and Storming Norm.

Orrible, that sums up my race.
I hadn't found enough time to practice this new (to me) circuit so was quite pleased to qualify 7th.
Made a reasonable start then wham bam thank you mam, flying cars before my eyes with a close up view of (I think) a Honda. Took a sh/r without a SnG go for that.
So off I trundle again a lo and behold there's another how's your father up ahead - did my best to slow but had to swerve left into a tree, a birch I think. Took another sh/r without a SnG for that too.
After that I had lost my mojo - not that I had much to start with.

I decided to do a solo spin resulting in a sh/r for which I did take a SnG. Later on I span again and this time decided no more resets. Miraculously I managed to reverse out of my jam with no damage and trundle off again.
I finally hobbled to the flag and my nightmare was over...

PS: the server replay won't be up until Thursday as I'm away tomorrow

Hmm. You're absolutely right Bernie & I must admit that I was one of the offenders as I thought qually was over Embarrassed. In my measly defence, several of us had just had a crash-to-desktop so it was one of those "has the server gone mental" discussions... but I do apologise if it put anyone off as I know that's damn annoying Sad

Was out on a corporate sailing day & returned rather late. Last minute negotiations with the Fun Warden & I managed to sneak into IGOR just before end of practice. No time for a qually lap but thought I'd slot in at the back of the grid & see what happened. Race started foot on the pedal - forward motion but no steering. "Nobrakes" is one thing "Nosteering" is too much. Turns out the power lead to the wheel had slipped out - so it was a "No start". Was quite looking forward to this race - never mind.

Had the dreaded screen-freeze in the middle of quallie which required a complete restart of my PC. As a precaution I did a hasty re-install of the Solitude track but on rejoining the server found I now had a slightly different groove to the one I had practised  Undecided. Not sure if that threw me or whether it was just generally poor concentration on my part, but after that I was struggling with my braking points the whole race.

Long straights & few slow corners meant this track rather suited the BRMs. I managed a last-minute effort to grab pole & make it 3 BRMs in the top 4 but then did my usual woeful start. Have now appointed teammate Rog as my official starting-coach as he demonstrated the proper way to get off the line by surging ahead from the second row.

Found myself in 3rd on the first lap & was just wondering how to get past Nicky & his turbocharged Cooper when I realised I'd gone sailing flat out off the track & over the haybales at the last corner Tongue. Didn't get any damage but couldn't figure out a way to get back to the track so had to take a shift-R followed by a S'n'G next lap. Another missed braking point resulted in a forest foray & shift-R followed by S'n'G number 2. Lap 4 brought yet another shift-R after I got clobbered by Norbert's car as I passed him on the straight - looks like warp to me but at least for once I could claim it wasn't my fault so no S'n'G that time. After that it was an enjoyable run trying to catch the guys ahead - was shaping up for a good battle with Bookie at the end but he fended me off well on the final lap.

Anyway, pleased to get my first ever fastest lap and delighted to see my teammate Rog claim his first win Grin Congratulations also to Nicky who did very well to get 2nd in the under-powered Cooper & to Norm for a strong drive to 3rd.

Can't work out if I was lucky here or not. Clutch said he raced Al H on the server one night & he was doing 3.44's all the time. Couldn't believe I quallified 3rd but I had the advantage of being first on the road.
There was a lot of pre race chat on Igor about music & concerts so when Al H went crowd surfing at the end of lap 1 I thought "rock on". A slow start by Al H & me left me 4th but keeping in touch but with a few "offs" & spins I had a lonely race. Maestro came close to me but fortunately when the offs & spins occurred he was far enough back for me to rejoin ok, you'll gather I am pro prebluda. A lot of my offs were caused by missing gears (Nicky I have the correct program thanks) don't know if it was me or damage from the offs but think it was me.
I was a bit jittery all night really but managed to hold it together to keep my 3rd place which is my first podium in my 13th UKGPL championship start. Lucky for some. Well done Ruk your first win I believe & Nicky chasing him all the way.
On to Kyalami where last season I made what the moderator described as a blinding start -  if your new to UKGPL & don't know what happened next then don't ask!

Woooooow , that wasnt my engine exploding  , but just braking hard into Schätten
fighting back 2nd position .

It worked out , but unfortunately I did an slightly mistake couple of turns later at Cafe Glemstal ,  touching the green too much . That kicked me out of slipstream effect to Roger and my little hope to be able producing some pressure on him  , were gone.
As Al had bad luck at the last turn of lap 1 and Norm was comfortable behind me , my only job then was to bring the car home in one piece.

Big hand goes to Roger for an brilliant drive , very well deserved win !!!!
To Norm on great 3rd on podium , to Al for fastest race lap and to all taken part.

See ya soon on track  ( which one next ? )

Cheesy Nice pic. If you look very closely you should be able to see the look of shock on my face Cheesy You sounded like a 747 making a ropey touchdown & I thought "he'll never make it round that corner" but damn it you did!

Great race for me, started 4th had good start and was in 2nd place at 1st bend behind Nicky. So missed the 1st bend fiasco. With good setup and in BRM passed Nicky at Lettenlocher, managed to keep lead to give me my 1st win. Grats to 2nd Nicky and 3rd Nhance. Thanks to Al Heller for setup and John for advise.
