Moderator's Report

A great race that saw some great close racing between large groups of drivers.

A superb performance by Ryeman saw him claw his way back from the lower echelons to go on and win, but will he retain his win?

Clive and John both made the mistake of using magnets as ballast and discovered that opposites attract.

Even last place wasn't decided until the last lap but Mike skilfully held on to it and won another wooden spoon.

Server replay time: 0h06m53s

Natan loses control and gets hit by Ryeman which pushes him off the track.

I think Ryeman sees Natan having difficulty and anticipates him sliding off the track. Natan rescues his slide but is heading towards the inside line when he does and I think still out of control when he gets hit.

I think Jim should have reacted more quickly to avoid Natan and it is his responsibility to avoid a collision.

I've called it a rear end shunt as I don't think it was an intended overtake and Ryemans speed at this point compared to previous laps would also suggest he wasn't attempting a pass.

UKGPL Season 18 (2009) Amateurs Trophy (65) - Kyalami (GP) - Oct 6

The third round of the Amateurs Trophy finds us at the South African circuit of Kyalami, first built in 1961 and first raced by F1 in 1966 following a major upgrade. A track of 2 halves the long straight should offer some great slipstreaming opportunities which could end in disaster entering the long and slippery T1 at Crowthorne, especially on lap one. There is a large run off area but most that use do not manage to find a quicker line than those who stay on the tarmac.

Ensure you have the pit wall in place. Those without it will be disqualified.

The standard papy track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it.  The absence of a pit wall will not stop you joining the race but anybody seen miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will be disqualified.

Clive proof Instructions for restoring the pit wall are either;
1. Rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
(That will give you back a wall you can crash your car into).

If you want the old papy Armco GFX back do this.
2. Rename or remove Armco_s.mip.

Chassis allocations are below- the same chassis will be used for all races this season, unless there is an adjustment agreed by the moderator.  Good luck!

Reserve drivers should not join the race server until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left.
No drivers should go out on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left as this helps all drivers join the server successfully.

Restrict chat to pit messages, and at the end of the race avoid chat until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Wont have time to practice for this race. Luckily I already have a setup (I believe) and I know the track well, so hopefully it wont take long to get into grips with it.

OK, so I am hoping to compete in this one tonight.

I couldn't find a specific rules page for the amateurs racing, really all I need to know is: are we allowed shift r's if we rip the wheels off? followed by a sng?

Hopefully the install of the updated mod wont scupper my racing!

Not in Pro it won't let you shift/R.
The rules are accessible via the ukgpl.com frontpage https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/intro

joined totally unprepared, ripped out the watkins glen setup. did a few laps, adjusted brake balance, camber values, slightly changed tire pressures and added some toe at the rear, did a few more laps, qualified 10th. did a couple of laps on race fuel load to finish off the practice.

for the race, i had a clean but slow start (i should really practice getting off the line with 65's, i'm fine with 67's) and was somewhere in the middle of the chain. as usual a few people went off in the first lap, so i was 8th at the end of the first lap. at the first corner of the 2nd lap, i overtook Fulvio to snatch 7th place.

a few laps later three people in front of me tangled at the first corner, leaving me in 4th, then a few laps later john and clive tangled as well at the first corner, handing me 2nd place.

jethro was awarded the lead and i was 1 second behind him. i was getting more and more used to the car lap after lap. jethro was throwing whatever car he had all over the place, making some small mistakes here and there. i decided to take it safe and pass at the straight since my lotus was alot faster there (even without a tow it seemed). made a half arsed move on one lap to show myself and then went past the next lap. led the race for a few laps and then parked it stupidly into the wall at a place where you shouldn't. race over.

I thought I did have a setup for this track. It turned out that I didn't. Started with a -67 setup and tweaked the gears to suit -65's and had a go. It turned out that it was way too slow, 3 seconds off the best. Started out last, got lapped by most of the field on lap 24, and logged off.

Oh dear. My best Amateurs Race so far, but still a DNF.

Enjoyed finally mixing it with the big boys at the front. Its taken me 2 years of owning GPL to manage that, so was quite happy. It seemed like everyone, including me was on the wragged edge and we were matching each other lap for lap.

Kicked myself when with 11 laps to go i selected Neutral and didn't release the clutch properly. The car slid into the barriers and the right side collapsed. Shame as i was in 3rd place, and could maybe have had a crack at 2nd, along with everyone else racing around me.

Enjoyed the racing and the laps flew by, but its a bit bitter sweet after my error. Shame, but good fun.  Smiley

I was loving that race until I messed it up on the exit of T2 and was fighting the steering for 100 yards and ended up in the fence on the inside. Couldn't get out of it.

Qualy was OK, but I had best sectors for a 23.8 and couldn't get near it. Best I managed was a 24.4something that put me 6th. Natan got the best start ever and breezed past me whilst the other BRM in front didn't move as quickly. So I was still 6th upon arrival to T1. There I avoided hitting anything (YAY!), and laughed quite hard when I saw cars flying off at T2 and then found myself in 4th with Hristo and Tim way down the order. H as it turned out was terminal in his BT7. After overtaking Natan I found myself 3rd behind the battling duo of evil and John. The 2 traded places and passing moves for a while and then found themselves a bit close into T1 on one lap. That got me very close to them and hoping they came to blows again. How right I was! John's attempted overtake on evil on the main straight was absolutely sidesplitting as the 2 cars pirouetted. To find me leading after being mid-grid was a pleasant surprise. With me, Ruud, Fulvio and Bartosz in close company we traded places until Ruud did the no-no at Sunset and killed his car, which left me in the lead for a short while until I fecked it T2 L14.

I can only appologise Hristo  Embarrassed
As you had the advantage into turn 2 I backed off to give you the corner and pulled behind so you could see me.
Unfortunatly you obviously didn't as at almost the same moment you piled on the brakes and dispite attempting to avoid you and slow I caught your rear wheel   Embarrassed
Totally unintentional as I was mearly trying to avoid holding you up and thereby allowing the field to swamp us.

After continuing from the fiasco I rejoined in dead last and drove my pants off to make up time.
Span to avoid (Phil I think) when he made a mistake in traffic a couple of laps in at T1 and rejoined in last but 1...

The red mist descended in force after that and I drove like a man possesed - slowly passing people as I went, sometimes they were good enough to fall off infront, other times I had to fight past.
Aside from prodding Fulvio's rear wheel in Clubhouse when he got sideways battling with the car infront (allowed him to rejoin in front only for him to be walloped by someone else 1 turn later!) I managed a totally clean fight back upto the front and with 10 to go was about 9-10 seconds behind James.
Kept my head down and drove in qualifying mode, started giving the car more and more revs as the laps dropped - the result was that I was gaining on him to the tune of a second a lap  Shocked
Not enough though - I finally crossed the line 0.8 behind James recording the fastest lap in the progress  Sad

Hopefully SHE will forgive my mistake as a result of my climb back to the podium, and I won't be forced to wear the tiny fundoshi of excruciating agonies ninja

Well, not great. I won here last season in Novices and was faster than Ryeman. What a difference a season makes LOL.

In qually I had sectors for a 25 dead but couldn't put a lap together faster than an a high 25.

Started steadily and through one thing and another found myself in the dizzy heights of 6th. Had an interesting moment when Ryeman was trying to pass on the inside into T1 and evil was rejoining on the outside but I think Jim saw what was happening and backed out of the move, Clive seemed to lift too. If you did thanks, if you didn't, thanks for nothing Wink.

I got some heat in the tyres but with fuel on board my setup was not a good one and I was only able to fight off Jim for a couple of laps and I had a couple of spins that put me next to last and 25 or so seconds off Phil Thornton so I set about chasing him down but could only match his laps or beat them for a couple then make a small mistake and lose it again.

20 or so laps from the end the setup came back to me and I felt more confident in it so I set my fastest race laps and caught Phil pretty much every lap and closed to within a second on the last lap but pushing too hard I ran wide at Sunset and the slim chance was gone.

I don't think I would have got him but one more lap and I would have had a chance.

Ho hum.

I'd given up the chase after Steve Bird, he was too quick for me and I was just trying to put in steady laps and you seemed to be 20 seconds behind for ages so I wasn't worried.  But then with 2 laps to go you appeared in my mirrors from nowhere and gave me the fright of my life.  So I pulled my finger out and tried a bit harder (set my fastest sector 4 time of the whole of praccy and race on lap 39).  It was just enough to make you push a bit too hard.  One more lap and I'd have been struggling Tongue

From watching the replay it would seem that your airbourne adventures after hitting Bartoz were actually me - or at least an amplified me.
I assumed at the time someone else had barreled into us when you took off, as I'd only slid gently into you while the pair of you formed your roadblock  Grin
The replay shows no-one else so I must have managed to fit some extra lag goodness into my hit to send you flying  whistling

Tim, I have no idea where you had the impression of what you speak. You were on the inside and in my blind spot, so I wouldn't even think of making the turn normally. Not to mention I braked later than normal in order to take the outside line, but you went in way too fast and right into my car. So I don't understand how exactly were you trying to avoid me there or what you mean by that.

I wish you and Jethro would cool off during early laps as you two always seem to be getting involved in all sorts of incidents, going a bit too hot headed and not willing to yield ever so slightly. That's my impression at least.

It's a 40 laps race, not 1 lap, and considering the advantage of your car and the possible tow from others, you shouldn't worry even if you drop a couple of positions early on. It's quite possible to win these races from just about any grid slot.

I'm bitterly disappointed, to say the least. See you next race.
