Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

A hard fought victory for Al Heller, very closely followed by the fast improving Peter Maestro. Van Tussman drove a superb race to pick up a podium and the fastest lap in his first UKGPL race, well done! RogUK pushed Al very hard and led the race for a couple of laps but a few too many incidents put paid to a podium position.

Server replay time: 0h01m03s

Lap 1 - Crowthorne Corner - Mark Minard and Bernie Darwin.

Mark gets a good start and picks up a couple of places on the run down to Crowthorne. Bernie and N Hance are several car lengths ahead as they approach the braking zone. N Hance keeps a tight inside line; Bernie is along side and keeps to the outside line wisely giving N Hance plenty of room. Mark sees the gap between Bernie and N Hance and decides to drive between them. However he leaves his braking far too late and crashes into Bernie.

Bernie was driving impeccably, he was aware of N Hance on his inside and was cognisant of the cars ahead leaving just enough room to avoid the risk of warp contact. Mark did not achieve any overlap at turn in and given the fact he ran wide into Bernie, he didn't have the ability to out brake him. The gap ahead was left deliberately by Bernie to avoid the risk of warp contact, it did not present an overtaking opportunity. Mark had Fabio Locarno in his blind spot on his inside most of the way down the straight but he didn't necessarily know that for sure, apart from a fleeting glance of Fabio's rear wheel in his mirrors at one stage. This is another reason why Mark should have stayed left rather than diving into the gap. Mark wasn't close enough to attempt a pass on Bernie, he had no overlap whatsoever at turn-in. Moreover trying to go a three abreast into Crowthorne was asking for trouble, the gap was always going to close up as Bernie and N Hance approached the apex.

If he had not made contact with Bernie, Mark would probably have made the corner but he would definitely have run wide. So it was a very ambitious overtake and rather unwise to attempt to drive three abreast into Crawthorne.

Given that his is a lap 1 incident it attracts a further one place penalty.

Billy is entitled to a no-fault Shift-R.

Server replay time: 0h01m11s

Lap 1 - Crowthorne Corner - Mark Minard and Rob Mott.

When trying to recover from his incident with Bernie, Mark makes an unforgivable mistake trying to rejoin. He is facing the wrong way but instead of waiting until the track is clear he immediately tries to do a U-turn and drives straight into Rob Mott. Carnage ensues with Paul Visser and Bookie Westbrook innocently involved in the melee.

Mark should have waited until the track was clear before trying to rejoin.

Given that his is a lap 1 incident it attracts a further one place penalty.

Server replay time: 0h01m15s

Lap 1 - Barbeque Bend - N Hance and Vos Vosblod

N Hance tries to overtake Vos on the inside at Barbeque Bend. Unfortunately he runs wide and makes side-by-side contact with Vos. Unfortunately Fabio Locarno gets tangled in the debris.

N Hance had no overlap at turn-in so this isn't a case of side-by-side contact after a legitimate over taking attempt. Rather this is an ambitious overtaking event.

Given that his is a lap 1 incident it attracts a further one place penalty.

Server replay time: 0h11m28s

Lap 8 - Crowthorne Corner - Fabio Locarno and Billy Nobrakes

Billy exits the pits after making a stop and go and gets to Crowthorne Corner before the main field is upon him. Billy stays wide to allow Fabio to pass but Fabio runs wide and contact is made.

Billy was not at fault here. He was driving at his own pace and left plenty of room. Fabio was in a battle with Bernie and so he had one eye on Billy and one eye on his mirrors. Nevertheless it is the lapping driver's responsibility not to make contact when the lapped driver has presented him with a clean passing opportunity. Having said that Fabio made a concerted effort to slow down and pass Billy on the inside, he simply failed to pull it off.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h27m04s

Lap 16 - Esses - Billy Nobrakes

Billy blows his third engine and retires. This is down to driving technique, there is nothing wrong with the car. Speed shifting (i.e. not lifting the throttle when changing up through the gears) means the engine over-revs for a split second on every up shift. THIS WILL DESTROY ANY ENGINE.

The first time this happened Billy tried to do a S&G but crashed in the pit lane and he needed a shift-R. He did a good S&G on the next lap (6) but failed to do another S&G for the Armco bashing incident at the end of lap 5. Crashing in the pit lane and needing a shift-R whilst trying to do a S&G does mean another S&G is required (a time penalty has not been awarded as it would make no difference to the result).

Billy's next engine expired gradually. His engine started smoking and missing badly at Barbeque Bend on lap 15 so he limped round the rest of the lap trying to get back to the pit lane to do a shift-R. This is not a good idea. Billy was very slow limping back to the pits and was a hazard to other drivers (although he did a good job of keeping out of the way which is to be commended). Moreover his reset in the pit lane put him back on the fastest part of the track just where drivers may be trying to overtake. What he should have done is to do a shift-R straight away, just down from Barbeque Bend where it is reasonably safe to do so, and then performed a S&G in the pit lane at the end of the lap.

Server replay time: 0h28m29s

Lap 20 - Crowthorne Corner - Al Heller and Nicky Ickx

Al looses control trying to avoid RogUK who has slowed up behind some back markers. Al spins and ends up stationary on the racing line. Nicky is a long way back and slows considerably but nevertheless is unable to avoid contact with Al's stricken BRM.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h28m59s

Lap 20 - Clubhouse Bend - RogUK and Van Tussman

Rog goes wide on the exit of Sunset but he keeps the throttle hard down and consequently gets a little squirrelly as he straddles the kerb. Consequently he careers into Van Tussman. Having his offside wheels on the tarmac and his nearside wheels on the grass coupled with an excess of horsepower is asking for trouble.

Rog should have accepted he was going to loose a place as soon as he went onto the grass. Instead he tried to fight to keep his place when he didn't have full control.

Van Tussman is entitled to a no-fault Shift-R.

Server replay time: 0h32m11s

Lap 21 - Jukskei Sweep - Vlad Vosblod and Graham Poole

RogUk and Fabio Locarno are locked in combat round Barbeque Bend when Rog looses it and Fabio has to take to the grass. Vlad is following close behind and pounces on the opportunity to get past Fabio who has regained the racing line but with much reduced momentum. The excitement ahead has taken all Vosblod's attention and he doesn't know Graham is also trying to take advantage of the situation and is now alongside Vosblod's Lotus. As Vosblod moves over contact is made.

Graham was quite a way back when this all started but he wasn't visible in Vosblod's mirrors for more than a fraction of a second so there was little opportunity for Vosblod to ascertain where Graham actually was. Although it is strictly Vosblod's responsibility not to move over the unusual lines and the opportunist move by Graham mean a penalty in this case would be harsh.

Graham is entitled to a no-fault Shift-R.

 Smiley Smiley
That was an real cool race  !!!!!!!!!!!  in fact most of the time it was more constant hotlaping then a race…I extremely enjoined  this…

Qually = P5 , fine

Start = I completely dreamed off that , lost 6 places.lol . P11

T1 = 3 cars crashed ; P8
T2 = another 3 cars crashed ; P 5 again

L1-L8 = simply hotlaping

L9 = Peter missed a bit the exit of T1 , so I could pass him onto the way to T2
Now I was hunted by Peter

L10 = P.Visser came back to track in front of Peter , but immediately moves to the right
to give Peter a free passing by . Very well done . big hand on that !

L 14 = Peter and I could reduce the gap to the leading `fours `.

L 17 = Al got surprised by Billy , who tried too find the pits entry. Roger took that chance to slipstream
Al out on the main straight .  As well Tusman did benefit and come real close to Al.

L = 18  I reached slipstream effect area to Tusman , serves me my PB off 1-25-71

L 19 = leading Roger under tremendous pressure by Al .enables Tusmann & me to close up to them

L 20 part 1 =  Minardi still didn’t realise he`s gonna to be lapped , so Roger was really needed to slow down
into T1 . Unfortunately Al  did realised that a bit too late ; turns out in an overbrake spin ..
Tusman could pass , not so I . Luckily my car wasn’t damaged.
But bad luck too  on Peter then , who of course closed up on me but ended up in sort of warp contact
at the exit of T2 , damned.     However P3 to me

L 20 part 2 = Roger slightly run wide at T4. I am sure he was hardly fighting to get back control over his car , but
unluckily he ended up crashing right into Tusman .
However , next thing Roger did , I am still unhappy with .coz he immediately  drove back on track ,
simply to accelerate  into spun off Minardi…then his car crashed into mine.
I did had to make an shift-R and P1 was a thing of the past.

My replay do not show what happened to Peter and Al that situation , but I guess in following positions
                     had been :  P1 = Al , P2 = Peter , P3 = Roger , P4 = Tusman  and P5 = me

L 20 part 3 = Roger did spun another time and Tusman and I could pass him .  P4 now.

Last 4 laps past by…without any sensations to me ..

All in all to me it was an very very great and thrilling race . Did have big fun. Thx all .
Congratulations goes to Al , Peter , Tusman , Roger and all.

See ya soon at Oulton Park

LOL!!
I can't wait to see the replay of this.
Really guys, please know that I'm always conscious of my mirrors and do the best I can to get out of your way without creating a Jochen Mass/Gilles Villeneuve situation. This was only my 2nd full race on the server.

EDIT: OK after watching the replay I'm not laughing so much. Just sent an apology to rog for my appallingly bad attempt at a rejoin.

Smiley sry for my harsh words Mark , wasnt my intention to blame you , just tried to describe the situation
the way I could explain after  watching my replay ..

btw . my replay even did not show that it was a rejoin by you . shows only a spin right side out into green and coming back to track without any controll over the car ... Cheesy

The Results - What about that Tussman eh?. Third place debut. I bet he has a Clark Hill team contract offer plopping into his in box before you can say Coventry Climax Wink. Yeah I know we wouln't have won season 17 anyway 'cos I checked so I'm over it Cool
AND before you say well why don't you sign him yourself well Mountside is a close knit 2 man low budget outfit & we have no room in our transporter. We even have to share a bag of spanners... still enough about our brolly girl! Grin

well, thanks NHanse for the eh.. but maybe you have to wait until after Oulton to see if I was plain lucky at Kyalami. I'm afraid that might be the case because Oulton is quite new to me and it seems to be a handful.

But it's great to race with you guys and I am looking forward to it

wow that seemed long and hard
had to stay on the pace and be consistent
Qualy 2nd which was a surprise, expected to be a few lower so that was a good start
However the actual start wasn't so good, went down to 4th by the time came out of T1
was struggling to keep up with 3rd, and I could see Nicky reeling me in
He took quite a few laps but when he caught me I decided better to let him by when it suited me so i wouldn't lose  much time and then hopefully as he was quicker them me i could hang onto his coat tails and slipstream to catch 3rd with him
Then spent huge number of laps just about keeping pace but staying in 5th. This was hard work Shocked
Until Lap 19!
Something happened to AlH, and I saw him tubling down Prib and then passed him on the side of the track, Now 4th
Then arrive at ClubHouse and it's carnage, cars everywhere. have to slow down and onto the grass to creep past Rog, Tuss and Nicky.
And now 1st  Grin
Well for about 10 yards, whilst I've had to tip toe through the mess AlH has been able to see it further away and keep a better speed up and got through and back into 1st Place.
Not bad 1st to 5th and back to 1st in one lap. I bet you couldn't believe your luck w00t
5 laps left and managed to hang onto 2nd place.
Cheers

Peter

Incident report read and my apologies to Bernie and Rob.

I have no excuse for the incident with Bernie; the report tells the story.

The scary part about what happened with Rob is that I thought I had plenty of time to pull that U in front of him!! I'm not making an excuse; the server replay clearly shows how I turned right in front of him. My perception of the speed of his car was faulty to say the least. I did something similar to rog later in the race; thought I had plenty of time to pull out only to be T-boned.

Steep learning curve, then you get to the server races which are another thing entirely.  Embarrassed
