Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

Another win for Al Heller which extends his lead in the championship. Van Tussman pushed Al very hard and was only 4 seconds adrift at the end of the race. An impressive debut from D Rock saw him secure the final podium place and the fastest lap of the race into the bargain.

Server replay time: 0h00m39s

Lap 1 – Le Belvedere – Vlad Vosblod and Graham Poole

Nhance and Norbert are a little tentative on the approach to Le Belvedere. Their lack of pace catches out Vosblod but he manages to slow in time. Unfortunately Graham doesn’t and he rear-ends Vos.

There is always a possibility that drivers will slow for particular sections on lap one and this was no exception. Graham should have anticipated that cars might be backed up before a slow section or that drivers could be extra careful, as was the case here. Vos is entitled to a no-fault shift-R.

Server replay time: 0h03m15s

Lap 1 – Virage de la Ferme - Al Heller and Van Tussman

Van Tussman gets into a slide on one of the right handers in the Virage de la Ferme section. He recovers control in time to get back on the racing line ready for the next left hander. This slip up has cost him some time and allows Al to catch up. Al goes for the inside line but the door has been closed and he makes minor contact with Van Tussman’s gearbox. Warp exacerbates the impact and Van Tussman is sent into a spin.

Al tried to go for the pass but the opportunity wasn’t there. There was clear contact on the server so the incident cannot be put down to warp alone. Warp undoubtedly made the impact worse but Al had no overlap in the baking zone whatsoever so the responsibility for the incident must lie with him.

Advice: Having made a mistake Van Tussman should have anticipated an attack up the inside and he could have stayed wide to minimize the risk of contact. Although he is not to blame for the contact in the interests of self-preservation he could have stayed wide. He would still have had the inside line for the next right-hander and so more than likely he would have retained the lead.

Server replay time: 0h03m15s

Lap 11 – Charade - Flaming Rogster

Rogster makes a mistake and crashes into the trees loosing a wheel. He needs a shift-R but it is his last lap and he crosses the line without making a S&G.

There is plenty of pit lane before the finish line so Rogster could have stopped before the line, completed his stop and go and then finished the race. The appropriate time penalty has been awarded but it makes no difference to the result in this case.

Server replay time: 0h08m37s

Lap 2 – Carrefour de Champaux Section - Alastair Baldwin

Alastair has one of his many crashes and this time needs to do a shift-R. No other car was involved, he just got stuck on the hillside. He fails to do a Stop & Go within two laps.

Server replay time: 0h08m47s

Lap 3 – Start and Finish Straight – Graham Poole

Graham fails to do a stop and go within two laps after the incident with Vos on lap 1.

Season 18 Novices Trophy - Round 5 - Clermont Ferrand (Charade)

The fifth race of the season is in France at the challenging Clermont Ferrand circuit in the Auvergne Mountains.  This is not the longest track on this season's calendar (Spa and Solitude are longer), but it is very twisty and difficult to pass on so each lap seems longer.  Patience and concentration will be required here.

We don't have enough grid slots to accomodate all the full-time and reserve drivers so the reserve drivers should only join if a grid slot is available (usually the case).  Consequently, reserve drivers should not join the race server whilst there is more than 30 mins of qualifying left.  Full time drivers must join the server promptly (before there is only 30 minutes of qualifying left) to be sure of a grid slot.

Having joined the server, no drivers should go out on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left - this helps to ensure all the full-time drivers have joined the server successfully before qualifying begins.

Please restrict chat to "pit in" / "pit out"  messages, and at the end of the race avoid chat until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.

Came across some rather fascinating footage of the original 1965 race at Clermont for anyone who wants to get into the mood (not sure about the Benny Hill style background music though) :

No way I can learn this track in time to even get up to my usual "menace" level of driving... Wink  So I'll be sitting this one out.
Hope to see you in two weeks at Zandy

This is turning into Black Night Racing's night off. Have parental duties tonight so I won't be taking part. Even so I really dislike this track.

This was one to survive not race. Happy with my qually time & 6th but slow off the line & a cold tyre spin left me 12th at the end of lap 1. Now I was behind all those who were slower in qually so all I could do was catch them & hope for a mistake. Basically everyone obliged by crashing & I finished 6th. The only actual race was when I momentarilly passed Bookie at the first right hander but he was having non of it & went round the outside to hold his place. Nice driving!. Only blot was that when Bookie spun I hit him & he overturned so he would have to shift R. Pity 'cos it was a good chase.

Never felt so tired as when I finished this one. The hardest race I think I have ever had on UKGPL because of the track, not the actual racing.
My sound problem arose as well but a mouse click brought it back without any crash.

First of all a very big thank-you to Nicky for his last-minute hosting thumbup2. Hope it didn't affect your race too much having to rush around getting it all ready.

I didn't have much time to practice for this race as I had been concentrating on last Sunday's 67 race at Bremgarten, but all the server problems meant we had a good deal of extra running anyway - I lost count of how many warm-up laps I started but I certainly knew sector 1 well by the time we switched servers Wink.

Tussman & D-Rock looked to have sewn up the front row in qually but my last-gasp final lap just nicked pole. I got a decent start so was surprised to see Tussman surging ahead into T1 but after checking the replay saw that of course we didn't have our usual staggered grid so we'd both started side-by-side.

Right after the start Tussman was warping pretty badly - his car appeared to be hopping around so I decided I'd better follow at a safe distance but as we reached the top of the hill he had a big sideways moment which caused me to close up. Haven't seen the server replay yet but my replay shows a clear warp incident - Tussman turns in from my right & yet the very next frame he has suddenly jumped over my car & is running on my left - there doesn't even appear to be any contact but nevertheless Tussman's car gets an invisible nudge. I'll submit an incident report with my replay just in case the server doesn't show it - but a shame that we didn't get a chance to race properly. After that I just tried to keep a steady pace & ensure I didn't make any mistakes.

Congratulations to Tussman for 2nd and also to D-Rock for a very impressive podium & fastest lap on his debut. Looks like the new boys will be a force to be reckoned with in the 2nd half of the season

Got to be one of my worst performances , I was feeling off color having just had the pig flue jab ( so 2 flue jabs inside 10 days )
wouldnt mind but I dont eat bacon sarnies , but do enjoy the odd pork now and again  Wink

Anyway back to the race ......

Qually was a write off for most of us I suppose , every outlap was rubbished by being discod after starting a flying lap lost count of the untimed laps I did , the result by the time Nicky applied the kiss of life to the server I was already past my best (which wasn't that good before iykwim )  Roll Eyes

managed an OK lap (for me ) to get 5th on the grid which became 4th a short while later and thought if I could close the gap to the leaders , maybe a podium was on the cards , but from there things went from  bad to worse as I overcooked it and slid off track somewhere after the downhill hairpin ,then in my efforts to make up time I became more and more ragged and the mistakes got more frequent culminating in having to s/r and pit in .

The last straw saw me stuck in the straw on the last bend of the last lap .

I used to read Motorsport GP reports in the 60's and 70's on this track, I can distinctly remember more than one driver feeling sick after a few laps of this helter skelter ride (dark shades of charlie manson for those who know of him ) even my favourite charger Jochen Rhindt felt ill racing here , I now know why

My plan was to win this one. And it started fine, p2 on the grid and took the start.

If I just stayed on the racing line all should be fine. But of cause I didn't and "with a little help form my friends" I was down in p4.

By the time Nicky and D-rock had "let" me bay Al was too fare away. Then I only sat there and waited for him to make a mistake and of cause he didn't, so "only" p2 for me.

Well see you at Zandvoort.

Had a good race on my own, and at least finished for once. Humble apologies to Vos for the punt on the first lap, the crash engine went into hyperdrive.
