Season 18 Novices Trophy - Round 6 - ZandvoortThe sixth race of the season is at Zandvoort. The track is located in Burgemeester van Alphenstraat in the dunes north of the town of Zandvoort in the Netherlands. In all 32 grand prix races were held there between 1948 and 1985. Unfortunately part of the circuit was sold off in the late 1980s to make way for some bungalows and a pie shop overlooking the local nudist beach. A shortened circuit is still in use today but sadly not by the Formula 1 cars. Chassis Reallocation: At the half way stage in the season Al Heller has a healthy lead in the championship with 4 out of 5 wins. Consequently Al has moved chassis from the BRM to the Brabham BT7. All other drivers remain in their original chassis. However, chassis allocation will be under constant review for the rest of the season. We don't have enough grid slots to accomodate all the full-time and reserve drivers so the reserve drivers should only join if a grid slot is available (usually the case). Consequently, reserve drivers should not join the race server whilst there is more than 30 mins of qualifying left. Full time drivers must join the server promptly (before there is only 30 minutes of qualifying left) to be sure of a grid slot. Having joined the server, no drivers should go out on track until there is 30 minutes of qualifying left - this helps to ensure all the full-time drivers have joined the server successfully before qualifying begins. Please restrict chat to "pit in" / "pit out" messages, and at the end of the race avoid chat until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line. Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m. (You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so) IGOR and Race passwords: see aboveServer = update GamesclanT7_2 (please note we are currently using a server kindly provided by Fulvio)IP Address = 62.149.202.168 Race Date = 01-12-2009 Time = 21:00 Track = Zandvoort Variant = 65F1 Damage Model = Intermediate Qually Time = 30 minutes. Race Length = Long Password: see aboveDriver lists can be found on the championship standings pageChassis allocations are below, and the same chassis will be used for all races this season unless there is an adjustment agreed by the moderator. Please note chassis adjustments can be made at any time not just at the mid season review. Good luck! We are using the Gamesclan server for the Novices race tonight. I have made some changes to ukgpl6 and would like to run a short test race after the Amateurs finishes. Say Monza, Int-Short, 15 mins qually. If any of you can hang around for a bit after the main event and help test, it would be much appreciated. Ideally we need more then ten to check it properly.

Not the best start to my GPL racing career. Qualifying was OK as I was within a few tenths of my PB, though I think I ought to be able to get under 1:31 with a bit more practice.
Got too close to Maestro going into Tarzan at the start, and tapped him gently from behind, then moments later he'd turned 90 degrees and I tapped him again and my car went somewhat implausibly flying through the air. I'll try to leave more room next time. I forgot to do my stop-go penalty too.
On the next lap I hit Billy who was coming back on at Tarzan, and my car flipped.
I failed to settle down into a rhythm and had several offs, particularly pushing too hard at the last corner Pulleveld. I wasn't sure if I'd done some minor damage to the car bouncing off the barriers as it felt understeery, but it could just have been that I hadn't practiced much with heavier fuel.
Then capped off a bad race by beaching on Tarzan mid-race, and decided to call it quits to avoid taking everyone out as they came through to lap me.
I find I have a lot of difficulty managing the car on warming tyres, as under braking the car feels very loose when the lefts are up to temperature but the rights haven't caught up. Should I be setting pressures higher? At the moment I set pressures so I get 25 psi after several laps, but find the car hard to control for the first 3-5 laps until everything's warmed up.
[Edit: Just managed a 1:29.802! Wish I could have found that sort of speed when it mattered. Still no consistency though. Definitely past my bedtime now.]

Well the start lap incident. To be honest when it happened I felt it wasn't my fault and didn't take a SnG. On looking at the replay I have to say it looks like it was my fault so apologies to Fabio, Al, Rog and anyone else caught up in it. Not a defence but an explanation - at the start Al got the jump on me and going into Tarzan Fabio had achived overlap. I knew he was on my left and Al right with Rog behind him so was piggy in the middle. I thought if I slow too much going into L1 T1 I might cause a pile up behind so reduced speed slowly to let Fabio through. I didn't reduce enough obviously. Anyway apologies again - I'm usually extremely carefull. Rest of race. I'd been really pleased to Q 4th but, after the incident, found myself at the back. I desperately tried to make up ground and it started resulting in stupid mistakes. In the end decided to retire, not my race. Not the best start to my GPL racing career. Qualifying was OK as I was within a few tenths of my PB, though I think I ought to be able to get under 1:31 with a bit more practice.
Don't even look up my first online race. You did well and welcome to UKGPL

First off, sorry to anyone I may have inadvertently bumped or impeded due to my multiple spins and offs. Second, this was probably the worst race I've ever had in my 11 years playing racing games. After a couple of rookie mistakes early on I just couldn't get into a rhythm if my life had depended on it. Of course after falling behind I pushed harder to gain back time, which inevitably led to more spins. This wasn't helped by the fact that my handling got progressively worse as the fuel burned off. By my estimation I lost at least 65-75 seconds due to errors, made all the more bitter by 3rd place finishing only 30 seconds ahead of me. I'll definitely be more conservative in Adelaide after losing what should have been an easy podium.

Should I be setting pressures higher? At the moment I set pressures so I get 25 psi after several laps, but find the car hard to control for the first 3-5 laps until everything's warmed up. You should set your tyre pressures so they reach a nice even temperature across the whole tyre using pressure and camber, though that goes out of the window at Spa and Monza as people overinflate tyres to give less high speed resistance. Generally everybody takes a couple of laps to get theirs up to temp and the car will feel different, my setups tend to give me oversteer on cold tyres.Once I have my setup somewhere near how I want it I do runs of 10 laps or so and see how the tyres are at the end of it.

I like this track. Still it's a sign of the competition when you qually within 3% of the lap record & only get 7th on the novices grid. A handy crash at turn 1 lap 1 left me 4th going into lap 2. Still it will take a Turkey Machine type penalty imposing on the perpetrators for me to get any benefit from that as I eventually finished 12th. No point in going defensive too early in the race so various bods passed me although I did get bumped off early on as well. Eventually was 9th but with 9 to go I beached it at turn 1 & had to shift R & S&G which dropped me to 12th. A bit concerned for the last laps as Happyal was filling my mirrors & he & I usually meet when stepping from wreckage (well we did in season 17). No offence Al, good behaviour all round by us both. My braking is the weakest part of my driving as I can't heel/toe so just slam 'em on & select the gear for the corner just before turning. I suspect ( ok I know from a posting but it wasn't by a novice) some use the paddle shift but I'm not going that route. This sparked some comment, by my team mate for one, on a forum, but I'm sticking with the H shift in spite of all the times I miss gears. Norm H

LOL Norm, I was on my best behaviour, when I saw someone spinning, at first I thought, yippee someone to play with Then I saw it was you, and because we've had a few paint swapping moment, I made darm sure I was well within my limits. The only heart in the month moment was braking for turn 1, I thought I'd better brake early to be careful, didn't expect how early you where braking.... anyway, it was OK in the end, as I managed to slow down enough and took note for the next lap. Of course that was when I spun it, and let you go. After that I had a few other moments, and very sorry to G Poole, I really thought I left you enough space, you disapeared from my view and I thought you'd backed off, so I continued right into you. Very sorry. Apart from those bits it was a lonely but steady race for me. I thought I'd be higher up the grid, but everyone is so fast these days. I hope my speed imrpves soon, as it's a bit disheartening at the back all the time.

One incident of note - missed my braking into Tarzan on lap 2 & was a bit too hasty with the rejoin. Have not checked the replay but I'm guessing this caused the collison with Flatspot (maybe he was too "flat" to "spot" - sorry)& some further disruption to following cars. Apologies to all concerned. Otherwise quite happy to have kept the Brab on the grey stuff for pretty much all of 26 laps with no shift R. Just to echo Happy Al's comment - despite lots of practice and edging down the laps times this league just gets more competitive.

Ok thanks Happy Al. Lets say that evens the score so now go hard as you like when I'm in the way & what happens, happens, there will be no hard feelings on my account. It made the last laps interesting!.
Like Billy says its getting competative. If like me you were a mid field, at best, runner last season & thought - well we got rid of the best 4 (that could go up) to amateurs so now I may be higher up the field. Well no. Al H proves so good he's been given a BT7, Rog Uk goes BRM & goes even faster, & up pops new men Tussman, D Rock to name but two.
Good though 'innit Norm H

Hi Norm, I think you’re being very generous there, thank you. I really enjoy racing you because you’re always fair, I hope I’m starting to show you the same consideration back, I’m just sorry we have some many coming together’s in the past, which if we’re honest, was all my fault. Look forward to racing you again at the next race, hope we have many laps in a battle for places, because it was fun while it lasted at Zandy.

Norm H Using H shifter it the only proper way to change gears in GPL;) I also don't use H&T because it's very uncomfortable with G25 pedals. Try left foot braking

My congratulations goes to Tussman for his brilliant drive ( practise and race ) very very well deserved win !!!!! As well , big hand to Fabio for great 3rd & special congratulations to my team mate Norbert ! He really did extreme well , 3rd on Race Laps consistency !!!!!!! Big congrats of course to Roger on nice 4th and to all taken part . As Vosblod , D.Rock and Al got bad luck it was possible for me to came out 2nd in the end , with no way to give Tussman any sort of hard times to be honest. First lap I thought maybe I would have been able to stay in his tow , waiting for mistakes to come. But he was so badly warping to me that I decided to stay bit more save behind , instead of attack him . well as the result clearly shows , I was all the way much too slow anyway.lol. Special thanks goes to Billy and Bookie for taking care lapping been an save thing !!!! I doesn’t felt comfortable in that behind Nigel , but maybe I should have risk to come more close to him , just to make clear I am on to lap him .. ( hell , but that understeering served to me was that kinda worse , that I don’t want to risk to much at that time 4 laps to go .. ). All in all an great funny race . thx all . ( only downside : server quality to me wasn’t perfect , L-bar between 10%-20% , constant understeering on my Cooper and as metioned above , some warping cars. Well seen you all at Adelaide ! Btw , which version of Adelaide will it be ? Regards Nicky Ickx
