Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

Another impressive drive to victory for Evil Clive he was pushed very hard by Goran Jonsson who claimed his first podium in the Amateurs. Having just moved up from the Novices this season, Goran is proving more than a match for the established Amateurs, well done! After an eventful race Hristo recovered from a disastrous first couple of laps to claim the final spot on the podium.

Server replay time: 0h01m23s

Jethro Walters and Al Heller – Varikkokaarre – Lap 1

Jethro is following Al Heller down the back straight and closes up under braking into Varikkokaarre. Contact is made and Al is catapulted out of the race.

There is no contact on the server replay but there was a catastrophic accident on Al’s client replay. Clearly warp was a significant factor here but why did it occur? The overhead camera views clearly show Jethro is very close behind Al when compared to the distances maintained by the other drivers. Whilst he is not closer than the one car length advocated in the “Recommended Driver Behaviour”, it was far too close if Jethro wasn’t intending to attempt a pass. This coupled with Jethro’s rather ropey wireless internet connection meant that the risk of warp contact was very high.

Jethro should have realised he was creating a situation where warp contact was inevitable. It is the responsibility of all drivers to be mindful of the risks of warp contact and to drive accordingly. If your internet connection is very bad, please don’t race.

Note due to the accumulation of yellow card points (currently 24) this penalty triggers a one race ban. Jethro will miss the next Amateurs round at Laguna Seca.

Note: the overhead camera views are available via a link on the Moderator’s pages.

Steve Bird and James Rye – BP-Mutka - Lap 3

James is looking for a way past Steve, he takes a good drive out of VW-Mutka which allows him to get along side Steve through the next left hander, Curren Kurvit. Steve realizes James is there and he gives him enough room. As they approach the next right hander, BP-Mutka, they are practically side-by-side with Steve on the favourable inside line. James turns in and makes contact with Steve’s rear wheels sending both cars off.

When two cars are battling for position it is incumbent on both drivers to keep to their own side of the track. Steve did stay on his own side but James moved across too early, probably because he thought he was past Steve but he clearly wasn’t. The golden rule here is if you can’t see the other driver in your mirrors, you are NOT past and you should stay on your own side of the track.

When the replay comes back I'd be interested to see how lag was involved in the collision with Al. I'd lifted off and hit the brakes quite early, but his bumper came up so quick I couldn't avoid it. Submit the report, I'll take the penalty. I likely won't be racing the next few anyway, just practising the Cooper.

Absolutely fuming with the state of my internet connection. I should have heeded Al's warning on the lag, but it was fine for around 20 seconds, and then I had massive slowdown around the braking zone for T2/3 (hairpin just after the pits, forget what it's called). Tried a rejoin, but it was still nuts, so quit and threw my keyboard at the wall. It's now in a better state than my internet, but still no good to me or anyone else. Does anybody got a spare? What a race!

Qualifying was very intense as well and for some time I thought I had the pole in the bag, even when Tim closed up to 4 hundreds behind with his 1:19.84 lap.

I knew my BT7 had some more pace stored in it and so I tried a different set of gears, using 3rd for the hairpins and 4th in T1. It didn't feel very comfortable, but it actually worked and gave me an improvement to a 19.66.

Alas, Tim somehow found a lot of speed as well and produced a 19.66 as well, but his was 5 thousands of a second quicker apparently.  Roll Eyes

There was not much hope to pass for 1st on the start and passing in normal racing conditions would've been hard either because the BT7 just looses so much on acceleration, especially out the last corner on the uphill slope.

At the start I took the outside line of T1 to carry more speed, but Tim still managed to rocket his BT11 down T2 and the following straight. He looked at a good distance ahead, so I thought I would close up on him at T3 by braking as my usual braking point.

Suddenly I realized I was closing up on him too fast and it appeared as if he nearly stopped in the corner, so I couldn't avoid contact and we slid across the grass without much (or any) damage.

I was still close to the outside edge of T3 so I carefully rejoined, but someone took the outside line at that moment (or someone went off, not sure) and I had another contact, but managed to continue almost immediately.

Tim was also recovering just behind me and a mistake from me let him by, so now I had to chase him as we put effort to pass the cars ahead. I remember the likes of Phil, Clutch and King Hiro being our next rivals.

Tim eventually closed up on one of them at T1 but missed his entry point and drifted wide, so I tucked in on the inside and accelerated to line up alongside him. The car ahead had a slightly slower exit and Tim attempted a pass while I was still side by side with him, which led to a contact and we both spun in the grass again. I guess we were even now.  Grin

I think I had some damage on the car by then, because it was handling funny in some corners and the tires began to overheat, but for some 20 laps it was still quite consistent.

Passing Vix was not easy as he was very fast on the straights, but eventually he went wide in a corner and I took the inside, but he turned in as if I was not there and took himself out.

Clutch was next and I took him at T3 with a very late braking manouver, but somehow kept it in the corner.

By that time Goran was nearly 20 seconds ahead with about 23 laps to go, so I needed to take at least 1 second a lap to have any chance of catching him. This worked for 10 laps or so, but then he increased his pace and was on par with my laptimes on some laps. Amazing feat considering the RFB and H-shifter!

I still had some chance to catch him, despite the handling of my BT7 getting worse, but then I came up on a Ferrari backmarker who was about 100 meters ahead, but decided to nearly stop in T3 to let me by. Sadly it was on the line I take and I couldn't avoid contact, but at least it was low speed. It cost me 2-3 seconds though and the chance of catching Goran disappeared unless he would make a mistake.

With 3 laps to go the server lost me from the results and so the pitboard was showing me I was dropping a lap down with each lap. I don't know if Goran slowed down when he saw I "wasn't" behind him, but I could see him a corner ahead on the last lap, so the gap had gone down. There wasn't anymore time left though.

Amazing consistency by Evil to take the win, grats! Also a great drive by Goran! I really thought I could catch you both despite the incidents early on, but you were faultless in front, so a well deserved 1-2.

See you next race!

Do I have to? You missed your entry and went wide, I tucked in, you turned back into the line as if I wasn't there. Did you assume I've suddenly disappeared off the track despite having battled you closely for a whole lap before that or that I would turn in onto the grass inside the corner to make way for you?  Roll Eyes

Evil Clive took the consistency-meister award for the second Am's race in a row & once again had the best average laptime of 1:20.889. Just as in the race, Goran ran Evil close & if he grabs a win will
become only the 3rd driver after Podkrecony Ziutek & James Rye who has claimed a victory in both the Novices & Amateur divisions.

A perfect consistency score here would be 180 (no variation in laptime over 36 laps).

* the server lost Hristo but he did finish 3rd so I've adjusted his consistency score & everyone's high climber points to reflect that

I may be bottom of the High Climber table but if there's a prize for High Altitude I must be leading that one  Wink

Does Air-Jethro do a frequent-flyer program? Cheesy

There are couple of incidents but rather than discuss them here please raise an incident report.  The server replay will be available in the usual place so you can compare it with your own client replay.  You may find some differences due to warp.  That doesn't mean no penalties.  If you can, please submit a clip of your client replay with the report.

Yes Phil, the server replay does indeed look different to my client replay but as you say I'll refrain from any further comment.

Christ almighty, I should have aimed you towards the flag man, for target practice!!!! Cheesy

Alas in the melée Tuesday night my client replay didn't get saved. It was something I got into the habit of doing on a frequent basis, but lately I stopped.

Note to self: save your own damn replay.

On the plus side, landline internet's back up to a reasonable speed.

Jethro

I thing the answer to the question in your banner "Why the hell do I keep crashing then?" might be "because I keep using a sh*te wireless connection".

It would probably be better not to race with a wireless/mobile connection and if you can't get a good landline connection.  A self imposed race ban might save you from a real one if you end up being involved in incidents like this.  It would save other people a lot of grief too.

I think you need to ask your mum to fork out for a better internet connection.  She might be amenable if she knows you spend your time on-line talking to fine upstanding gentlemen who are the pillars of society.  Don't tell her we are a bunch of deluded old duffers who are trying to recreate their youth in a virtual reality bubble called GPL or she might pull the plug Wink.

Given the fact I've said several times "can I pay for my own phone line and broadband to actually have a decent internet connection for the infrequent gaming I do" and she's said no each time, I don't think you're helping my cause much. Wink

I know my connection's not great. But honestly, how was it in early 2009 on my VM modem? And you don't even wanna know about the awful halls-of-residence internet I had the previous year. GPL on that was a no-go. 50 second pings in Ventrilo!
