Moderator's Report

SUMMARY

Another impressive drive to victory for Evil Clive he was pushed very hard by Goran Jonsson who claimed his first podium in the Amateurs. Having just moved up from the Novices this season, Goran is proving more than a match for the established Amateurs, well done! After an eventful race Hristo recovered from a disastrous first couple of laps to claim the final spot on the podium.

Jethro Walters and Al Heller – Varikkokaarre – Lap 1

Jethro is following Al Heller down the back straight and closes up under braking into Varikkokaarre. Contact is made and Al is catapulted out of the race.

There is no contact on the server replay but there was a catastrophic accident on Al’s client replay. Clearly warp was a significant factor here but why did it occur? The overhead camera views clearly show Jethro is very close behind Al when compared to the distances maintained by the other drivers. Whilst he is not closer than the one car length advocated in the “Recommended Driver Behaviour”, it was far too close if Jethro wasn’t intending to attempt a pass. This coupled with Jethro’s rather ropey wireless internet connection meant that the risk of warp contact was very high.

Jethro should have realised he was creating a situation where warp contact was inevitable. It is the responsibility of all drivers to be mindful of the risks of warp contact and to drive accordingly. If your internet connection is very bad, please don’t race.

Note due to the accumulation of yellow card points (currently 24) this penalty triggers a one race ban. Jethro will miss the next Amateurs round at Laguna Seca.

Note: the overhead camera views are available via a link on the Moderator’s pages.

Steve Bird and James Rye – BP-Mutka - Lap 3

James is looking for a way past Steve, he takes a good drive out of VW-Mutka which allows him to get along side Steve through the next left hander, Curren Kurvit. Steve realizes James is there and he gives him enough room. As they approach the next right hander, BP-Mutka, they are practically side-by-side with Steve on the favourable inside line. James turns in and makes contact with Steve’s rear wheels sending both cars off.

When two cars are battling for position it is incumbent on both drivers to keep to their own side of the track. Steve did stay on his own side but James moved across too early, probably because he thought he was past Steve but he clearly wasn’t. The golden rule here is if you can’t see the other driver in your mirrors, you are NOT past and you should stay on your own side of the track.

Season 19 Amateurs Trophy - Round 2 - Keimola

A new track for UKGPL with some twisty sections and a decent long straight.  The track was used in the 1960s for Formula 2 races but it never hosted a Formula 1 race.  It is a nice track for the 65s and shouldn't be too difficult to learn.  The pit exit is a bit unusual in that it isn't near the start line.

Reserve drivers should not join until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left and all drivers should not go out on track until there are 30 minutes of qualifying left as this helps all drivers join the server successfully.

Please restrict chat to pit messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Don't forget to use the updated 65 mod for this race.

Please be in the IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:55 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

We have split the cars into groups based on average performance and split the drivers into groups based on average ability. The chassis numbers for Amateurs are as follows:

AMATEUR CHASSIS GROUPS
1 - Lotus, Ferrari
2 - BRM, Honda
3 - BT11
4 - Cooper
5 - BT7

Each driver has been given a seeding number and must pick a chassis with either an equal number or higher number but not a lower number. For example, if a driver is given a seeding of 2, he must pick one of the cars in group 2 (BRM or Honda) but if he would prefer to drive either the BT11, Cooper or BT7 he may do so. This means that a driver given a seeding of 1 can pick any chassis he prefers.

**NOTE**
Whichever chassis a driver begins his first race with is the chassis he must use for the remainder of the season unless a change has been agreed with the moderator.

The following drivers have made their chassis choice:

I might be a little late for this one depending on GPLRACER race, so please make room for me on the server.

Blasted windows meant that I had to do a re-install of all software, anyhow I have got GPL back up and running. However, my ethernet connection is mysteriously not working so I can only connect via wireless.

I think that I'll turn up for qualyfying and see how warpy everything is. Perhaps I should sit this one out?

That was the worst driving I've ever seen in GPL - and I'm including pick-up races in that statement.

Got off the grid OK & was heading towards the left hand hairpin after the pits exit following King Hiro & Clutch. I could see JW just behind so left him loads of room on the inside in case he wanted to try & take a dive into the hairpin... but no he decided to just drive flat out into the back of me instead. And I don't mean a little tap - I mean flat out as if I wasn't even there. Can you ruin someone else's race from now on please Jethro - I've had my turn.

Only just made the race as I was still installing my sound card, so couldn't do a qualy lap.

Turn 3, lap 1 and I was trying to pass a Lotus when a car was launched in front of me. I was fully comitted to the corner and unfortunately couldn't avoid a car that had been propelled to the inside of the corner.

Trying to put in a recovery drive, I was making some nice progress. I had what I consider to be a racing incident with S.Birds Lotus. I was on the outside and he probably didn't know I was there. I tried to leave room on the inside of the corner but maybe I pinched him a bit too much.

Then I had a battle with P.Thornton, whom I eventually passed and then passed K.Hiro. Tim Muttram had passed me but I was able to stay with him for a while before lack of talent saw me have a few lucky encounters with the barriers. Anyway, Clutch must have made a mistake or something, because I was 10 seconds down on him and all of a sudden...there he was. He almost lost it going into the last corner and I nearly collided with him.

Finally I passed Clutch on the straight, only to loose it in Turn 3. In my efforts to avoid going off, I slew across the corner and Clutch could not avoid an impact. Maybe in hindsight I should not have tried to correct the car so much and run around the corner on the gravel outside.

Anyhow, I was gaining again on Clutch during the last couple of laps and it looked like I might be able to finish an impressive P6. But then I lost it AGAIN and hit the wall.....then a spin...cars flew by and I was a bit damaged. Still the results say I was P7, which is a good result for me.

Results posted with Hristo's dropped laps reinstated.

Had a quick look at lap 1 on the server replay.  There are couple of incidents but rather than discuss them here please raise an incident report.  The server replay will be available in the usual place so you can compare it with your own client replay.  You may find some differences due to warp.  That doesn't mean no penalties.  If you can, please submit a clip of your client replay with the report.

good race track that  Grin

at least this time I got to see the chequer waved , good racing with ex soggy man Steve Bird until I made a stupid mistake followed by a few more even stupider mistakes and some near fatal errors of judgement,  in my 'paltry' efforts to make up ground , was good to have my old mate Phil join me for a few laps of dicing , but his red machine was to fast for me in the final stages .

My first proper race with cluthcing, H shifting and rightfootbraking. Still somewhat unsecure and tried to stay out off close battles. Liked the race and liked the track. Ended 7 th and I m pleased with that  Smiley

This was a great race for me. But I must admit that things somehow went my way.

To beguine with Nicky was not able to join, Al got hit and Tim and H kindly moved aside and let me and Clive by. Then kinghiro racing with H-shifting and right foot braking for the first time, (I think it`s great), meant he was in a new situation. I too use H-shifting and right foot braking but I have done it for some time by now.

That said I think I did a good race with no major mistakes and though I could not really follow Clive I was never threatened from behind. There were times when H came a bit closer but then he fell back again. The only time it was a bit critical was when I was comming up on a backmarker and he was spinning just in front of me.

So, bring on the next, see you there.

Not really a fanh of this track, but after a few laps i started to get into the groove a little bit and actually quite enjoyed it.

The car was pretty stable on heavy fuel and i could lap consistantly. I knew the faster guys would catch and pass me and though i tried to defend, it was always only a matter of time when the likes of H and Tim got past.

Can sympathise with Al Heller. I'd just turned into the hairpin he mentions when i saw a couple of cars fly over my head. I guess it was the usual 'everyone brakes at the same point as me don't they?' attitude from some. I'm aware that i break earlier than most, perhaps due to my driving technique, but have to say, the fast guys who passed me were very professional, braking off my line so potential collions are avoided..etc.

On low Fuel, the car was all over the pace and the left front was getting too hot meaning the car was unstable. Had a good race (not for the first time) with J.Rye and its a shame it ended in a collision, but we both finished so its not all bad.

Finally, great to see KingHiro and G Jonsson H-Shifting, Clutching and Right Foot braking. Sure its more difficult - a lot more difficult - but great to see. Its reassuring i'm not the only one struggling with it. And yes.. I'm afraid to say.. doing it that way is 'Keeping it real'. I've yet to find footage on YouTube of Jim Clark Flicking up and down the gears with paddles behind the wheel and his left foot sat ready on the brake  Wink

A new circuit for me. Managed a few short practice sessions over the past few days and was quite pleased to be getting the new green thing down to the 1:20's, but had no idea if that was anywhere near competitive.
Qually was interesting , and it looked ( for a while) like I was in with a shout of pole position...then Hristo put his oar in! followed by Tim.

I tried a few banzai laps, but was still learning the circuit and decided that my time would be better spent running on race fuel.
3rd spot on the grid looked under threat from Goran who was going well on his pre-warmed tyres but I survived.

The start was ok, still not used to getting the green thing off the line, and I pulled alongside Hristo as we went to T1. There was no way I was going to get around the outside of Hristo this early in a race so, a quick glance at prib showed 0.5secs back to 4th so I eased back and followed H around the inside.
It was obvious that Tim and H were very evenly matched and were going to put on a good show  for 1st place.................. until..............T3 where things got very scary with metalwork flying in all directions.
Using the tried and tested technical avoidance procedure of closing both eyes and holding on tight!! I aimed for where one of the cars was, in the hope that it would not bethere when I arrived. ...It worked, and although I was forced to run a very strange and wide line through T3 I emerged unscathed and in the lead.
I figured that this was going to be my only chance of beating Tim and H if I could build a big enough lead and keep the pressure on with laps in the 1:20's. I needed about 15 secs lead if I could squeeze that much out of the green thing, to keep me in with a chance of the chequered flag. As an extra incentive Goran was also on fire and for the first half of the race kept pace with me and only about 3 secs behind....far too close for me to relax.
At half way i think Goran eventually made the mistake I was praying for and dropped back by another few seconds... and still no sign of Hristo or Tim on the prib readout.
From then on I tried to keep it clean and neat checking my lap times to maintain that 1:20 time. 3 laps to go and I eased slightly and started short shifting just in case Roll Eyes
I was really gifted this race my Tim and Hristo's T3 tangle, and a good slice of luck. Still not totally hooked up with this green thing but we are getting better.
Grats to all finishers and I think at least for the 65's this is a great little circuit.
