Season 19 Spec Race Challenge - Round 3 - Silverstone

Back to more familiar territory for Round 3 of the Spec Race Challenge with a visit to Silverstone.

After two rounds there is a clear 1st / 2nd position developing in both Brigades. In Lights, Hristo leads the way with four wins in four races, closely followed by Tim Muttram with 3 x 2nd places. In the Heavy Brigade Steve Bird almost performed a similar feat but Phil Thornton spoiled his party.

We will run two races on the same circuit. Two chassis are available, you must use one in each race. Use the same car twice earns you a disqualification in the second race.
Your choice of chariot for this occasion is the 1965 Mod ~ Cooper versus the Rice Burner

The Spec Series is a full championship with standard points scoring. In addition the moderator will also tally up every drivers fastest race lap & compare the chassis head to head. For your time to count in the “Spec Challenge” you must complete more than 50% distance in both races. Resets are allowed so don’t retire because of a bad start.
Also the Spec Series in the only GPL championship to be decided exclusively by driver skill, no handicapping applies.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page
The track is the standard Papyrus version.

Unlimited Shift-R is allowed in the race. No-fault Shift-Rs will not attract a Stop & Go penalty.  All other Shift-Rs must be followed by a Stop & Go.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time = GMT).

Due to the number of races moderating will be light touch - reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (ie the following Friday). We're hopeful most incidents can be resolved amicably. A sorry in the forum won't be taken as an automatic admission of guilt by the moderators.

The Championship is split into two sub-divisions, the Light Brigade & the Heavy Brigade. The driver allocation is set out below.

Please ensure you join the correct server, due to the way we import if you start the race on the wrong server your result will not count. If you can try to make sure you are in the chatroom by 8.50pm this will enable a decision without any delays to the start time.

Big apology to everyone for the server mix up.

I forgot to change the default number of drivers in the race - so UKGPL7 would only allow 12/13 entrants. The remainder had a race of their own on Nicky's server. I suspect that combining the results may be a bit difficult (between Lights & Heavys) in which case results from Race 1 are potentially void. I had to find a way to stop Hristo winning!!

Totally down to me - goes on the long list of lessons to be learned.

Fingers crossed we might be able to combine the results but, having tried something similar in the past, srou might not like it. Taking off my mods hat I think T7 should stand as everyone joined and raced in good faith. That said I appreciate not everyone will feel like that so guess there is the option of an end of season re-run?

Anyway enjoyed the two races, had some fun at the farther end. Second race I span and threw away loads of places only to find those that passed me returning the compliment further on.

BTW I know how easily things like that can be done Billy, so many boxes to check, especially in the heat of the moment.

Don't worry Bill, it isn't easy working under pressure.  Please send me a link to the html export and replay for the first race on Nicky's server and I'll amalgamate them into race 1 (it will be a bit fiddly but I think I can do it).

Well done Phil - out of interest did you have to amend the GPLRA report or did you find another way?

I had to amend the GPLRA report, I'm not aware of any other way (except editing the HTML export).  Replays and reports in usual place (i.e. here).  The combined GPLRA report for race 1 is there too if the Statmeister needs it Wink

The main thing that confuses SRou is when cars have the same number.  Not surprising really LOL.  Anyway changing the numbers for Nicky, D Rock, Maddog and Bernie sorted that bit.

Thanks for sorting that out Phil! And agree that it's easily done Bill - the amount of times I've tried to host a practice but forgotten to open the ports or left it passworded.

Really enjoyed these races. Hadn't really driven the 65 Honda in anger so was surprised by how quick it was & even beat my overall PB in race 1. Took the Cooper in race 2 & was enjoying a nice squabble with Martin but managed to blow my engine so had to take a reset & SnG.

Had great fun in race 1, was following and pressuring Clive for most of it only for the engine to blow with 4 to go as I was starting to think about making a move  Roll Eyes
Luckily there was enough room back to Al for me to ShiftR, but after my stop and go I was too far back to catch him before the line  Sad
Great fun while it lasted though  Grin

Race 2 was a different story - Having done no practice at all prior to Sunday night I spent the practice session converting an old Clermont setup I had lying around to suit Silverstone.
It wasn't perfect but was good enough for a fairly comfortable 2nd on the grid behind Hristo. At the drop of the flag I out dragged H into T1 and then clung on for dear life for what felt like an eternity before finally missing my braking point into (T1 I think) and letting H through.
Had a decent gap back to the field by this point luckily and dived back into Hristo's slipstream to stay in contact, helped by my apparent ability to carry more speed into Becketts than H could.
I kept making the odd small mistake every 3 laps or so but thanks to Becketts,Woodcote and Hristo himself (Plus the slipstream  Grin ) always managed to get right back up behind Hristo - just never close enough to challenge him though  Embarrassed
Then it all went to pot with 2 to go when I turned slightly early into Club but decided to leave my foot firmly on the floor to catch H a bit more - I'd done the same a couple of times in both race and Practice with no problems but my luck ran out and I span while i crossed the grass. Manged to regain control 360 degrees later, now down to 2nd gear and a country mile behind Hristo so just set about finishing as quickly and tidily as possible - only to clip the inside kurb at Abbey the next lap and spin again!  Roll Eyes
All in all I was damn lucky to stay ahead of Steve and Phil after what had been a very good drive by me  hammer

Well done guys - great race(s)  rockon

Don't feel too bad about the server Billy, I know how tricky it is and soooo easy to miss an essential setting. Shame for those who were excluded from the fun but it looks like Phil has performed a minor mathematical miracle and combined the results.

First race was great fun chasing Hristo in the Wazas ( with a wasa waza in 3rd!!!).
Hristo rightly accused me of making too many "over driving" errors to mount a serious challenge, but I enjoyed driving HER cars again.

Tim's sudden disappearance from my mirrors at Stowe was a relief and a shock as I could see he was getting ready to make my life difficult.

I owe Jethro an apology for the 2nd race as my kerb clipping at Abbey threw me into his path on the exit and ended both our chances of fighting for a podium place. By the time I had remembered to do a stop and go and rejoined the race I was battling with Nicky somewhere mid pack and enjoying the "chuckability" of the Cooper.
Hristo is still the man to beat by some margin as he always seems to have something extra available. This series does allow him the luxury of equal machinery, so if someone does beat him it will be a "true" result.............huh!! some chance eh??!! Roll Eyes
